Welcome to our first of two wine weeks! Up first by request, we'll explore the red wines. All the wines are pretty accessible.
Let’s sip on some vino together, shall we? I’ll be your tour guide this week as we sample my favorite libation (don’t tell Todd), wine!

With so many options available, I’ll recommend regions that often produce solid offerings rather than specific bottles (for example, any Cabernet Franc from Virginia, Loire Valley, or New York). If there is a Total Wine near you, they have a great way of filtering by price, varietal (the grape(s) used in the bottle), and region. They also deliver in many locations. But these styles should be available at any liquor/grocery/ABC store near you!

There is no need to buy them all, or any for that matter if you want to kick back, drink some whiskey, and watch. If you do wish to participate, here is what we’ll be sampling:

Pinot Noir - The lightest in color and body on the list, Pinot Noir is a versatile grape with beautiful expressions worldwide. It is best known in France’s Burgundy region and often carries the highest price tag, but wonderful expressions can also be found in Oregon, Washington, and New Zealand.

Merlot – A medium-bodied red, Merlot is the most widely planted grape in France’s Bordeaux region. Wonderful expressions can be found in California, Chili, South Africa, and many other New and Old-world regions.

Nero d'Avola – I had to throw some Italian wine at you, so grab a bottle of Nero d’Avola. No worries if you haven’t heard of this wine, as this is easily the least-known varietal on the list, but that’s a good thing! Unlike the highly sought-after Sangiovese, Chianti, and Nebbiolo, Sicilian wines usually carry a much lower price tag than their northern neighbors while still delivering on quality. This may be the sleeper of the group.

Cabernet Sauvignon - The king of reds. You can find this full-bodied red in any store in the USA. Napa Valley has some great expressions, usually very fruit-forward due to the amount of sunlight it receives, but some fantastic offerings come from a bit further north in California and into Washington State, as well as Chili, Italy, South Africa, and most famously, the Bordeaux region of France.

Syrah/Shiraz – The biggest of the reds on the list, Syrah and Shiraz, are the same grape, which carry different names depending on where they are grown. Like Shiraz, Syrah is bold and spicy but usually a bit softer and elegant. Great examples are from France’s Rhone Valley, Sonoma, and Chili. Shiraz is the most famous red varietal in Australia. Look for offerings from the Barossa Valley!

I picked styles that are as close to nationally distributed as possible. All offerings can be found with expressions under 15 dollars, showing you don’t have to spend a ton of money to get a good bottle of wine. Feel free to bring your favorite bottles in these categories and tell us why you love them!

Our RYE Single Barrel is out NOW to our Patreon Members. This beautiful 3.5 year Rye Whiskey is one of the first Rye Single Barrels put out by Still Austin and carries notes of caramelized brown sugar, salted butterscotch and toffee on the nose. On the palate, tons of molasses and burnt sugars are immediate, with caramel sauce, spicy cinnamon reminiscent of Red Hot’s candy, and the slightest kiss of fresh cut mint hitting mid palate. The finish is a rush of baking spices that linger on the tongue and instantly invites you back for another sip!

We are excited to welcome back Adam and Nora from Lost Lantern Whiskey! This month, they are releasing their new 2024 Spring Collection, featuring distilleries from the Midwest, including Starlight Distillery in Indiana, Cedar Ridge in Iowa, Tom's Foolery and Middle West Spirits in Ohio, Wollersheim Distillery in Wisconsin, and FEW Spirits in Illinois (not to mention their first multi-state blended rye).
