UN Environmental Experts write government on the severe lead pollution in Kabwe.
Kabwe.
UN Experts on toxics, human rights and persons with disability have written to government about the severe lead pollution and serious human rights concerns in and around the former mine in Kabwe.
The UN yesterday published a letter from two UN special rapporteurs, the expert on toxics and human rights and the expert on persons with disabilities, Marcos Orellana and Gerard Quinn written to the government of Zambia on the need to urgently clean up Kabwe town.
The Two UN Experts have asked government about its steps to address the toxic threat and urged robust steps to end the longstanding health rights violations and ensure the health, safety, and well-being of Kabwe’s residents.
A 2018 medical study estimated that over 95 percent of children in townships exposed to lead from the Kabwe mine have elevated blood lead levels, and about half of them in the townships have such high blood lead levels that they urgently require medical intervention.
The study also revealed that adults are also affected, with particular risks during pregnancy.
And six organisations dealing in the environment namely Human Rights Watch, Advocacy for Child Justice, Caritas Zambia, Children's Environmental Health Foundation, Environment Africa Zambia, and Terre des Hommes has supported the call from the UN Experts.
Recently Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Barnaby Mulenga said government is taking steps to tackle the problem and is currently testing and treating children affected by lead in Kabwe with a loan from the World Bank, and has started to remediate homes and a school.
PMRC outlines PF achievements in the Education and Health sectors.
Lusaka.
The Policy Monitoring and Research Center says the Patriotic Front has scored in the provision of health care and education through its investment in both infrastructure and human capital.
PMRC Executive Director Bernadette Zulu says in the education sector, the upgrading of schools at primary and secondary levels will guarantee more children the right to access education services.
Mrs. Zulu said extending loans and bursaries to support more students in institutions of higher learning is also evidence of government’s commitment to growing a highly skilled labour force.
She said government’s campaign to end child marriages and the implementation of the School Re-entry Policy will ensure that girls have equitable access to opportunities in order to fairly compete with their male counterparts and participate across all developmental spheres.
And Mrs. Zulu said investment in the health sector can be seen through a reduction in the doctor-patient ratio, the expansion and modernization of health facilities and provision of health coverage to all members of society through the National Health Insurance Scheme.
She said in a statement that these are critical areas of investment in the attainment of universal health coverage and provision of access to quality and affordable health services.

The incident is reported to have occurred on 25th July 2021 at 08:15 hours resulting in a system disturbance.
Zesco Limited Public Relations Manager Hazel Zulu said repair works which have since commenced will cost the corporation about K2.5 million and will go on until 31st July.
Mrs. Zulu who is hopeful the culprits will be arrested soon said the deliberate removal of bolts and nuts has weakened the tower structure leading to its collapse following heavy winds experienced in the area.
She said despite the sufficient capacity of the remaining transmission lines between Kabwe and the Copperbelt province to meet the requirements of the two provinces, customers may experience intermittent load management in selected areas on the Copperbelt and Northwestern provinces in the event of any system overload during repair works

Dr Aaron Mujajati writes:
VAGINAL FISTULA
Vaginal fistula is a physical, social and psychological disease of of the va**na. Well that is our definition if you will accept it. Allow us to explain.
It is physical because when it happens there is actual physical damage to the va**na such that a communicating opening develops between the va**na and the urinary bladder or va**na and the re**um or va**na and both re**um and urinary bladder. Depending on which of the three has happened a woman would have faeces coming out through the va**na or urine or both as the case may be.
Now imagine a woman walking around smelling of urine or faeces or both because they are flowing out of her and she can not do anything about it. Urine and or faeces flow out of her va**na with no control. Imagine the social impact. Such women are mistreated by society and it is common for their men to leave them. Now you see why it is a social and psychological disease.
What are the causes?
1. Obstructed labour especially in under age pregnancy
2. Poor access to skilled birth services
3. Large baby. Very common in diabetic mothers.
Fortunately corrective surgery is available in Zambia. Don't suffer in silence. Seek help.
IG Kanganja directs Police Officers to use force to bring order in the country.
Lusaka.
Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has directed his officers to use force in bringing order in the country and not allow any political leader to abrogate the code of conduct and Covid-19 regulations under the guise of distributing face masks.
Mr Kanganja says it has been observed that some political party leaders have taken the route of deliberately abrogating the electoral code of conduct and the Police should ensure that the conduct of such activities such as receiving of political leaders at airports is not allowed.
He says the political leaders are using this activity to gather large crowds which are turning out to be processions or rallies despite such as activities being suspended by the Electoral Commission of Zambia working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
Mr Kanganja says the guidance was that only door to door campaigns should be allowed and with not more than three people however, this does not seem to be the case on the ground.
He says he has observed continued political activities being allowed by some regulating officers, the conduct which is outside the provisions of the law guiding the electoral process.
Mr Kanganja says from today onwards, he wants to see total compliance to existing regulations, failure to which action shall be taken on officers failing to do their job according to regulations on Covid-19 and provisions of the law.
He notes that Officers have been tolerant for a long time and this tolerance is being taken as weakness by some political players and has resulted in them not taking heed to regulations and guidance.
Mr Kanganja has directed Police Officers to use force in bringing order in the country and all those that will deliberately choose not to follow the instructions should be dealt with accordingly.

FNB Zambia launches e-commerce solution.
Lusaka.
FNB Zambia has today launched an e-commerce solution to enable small- and large-scale businesses to sell their goods and accept payments online.
According to FNB Chief Executive Officer Bydon Longwe, driven by a steady rise in internet pe*******on estimated at 52.9percent, the e-commerce market in Zambia is poised for growth.
Mr Longwe says more notably, the COVID-19 pandemic has spurred consumer expectations that every business should offer the option to digitally pay for everything, from buying groceries and takeaways to booking a ride.
He says the appeal of convenience, security and simplicity has driven more consumers to prefer a digital shopping experience over the physical alternative, forcing business owners to adapt.
Mr Longwe says as a bank keen on helping businesses start, run and grow, FNB believes that the ability to facilitate online payments for goods and services will inevitably result in increased customer acquisition and improved profit margins for businesses.
He says looking ahead, the Zambian businesses that is likely to succeed in the new world will be those that have demonstrated an ability to seamlessly adapt and replicate their bricks and mortar services to an online offering.

Andrew Kamanga tells Bowman Lusambo to stop meddling in football affairs.
Lusaka.
If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!
We are in receipt of this letter from Andrew Kamanga’s lawyers demanding that we cease to comment on his poor leadership at Football House which we believe has affected the performance of our much loved Chipolopolo.
We wish to affirm to Mr Kamanga’s lawyers that as long as their client wants to remain at Football House, he should be ready to be criticized, and criticized heavily.
Gagging us is a very stupid attempt at perpetuating the nonsense going on at Football House. Andrew should know that he can only manage to intimidate his wife and his kids.
Andrew should quickly realize that he is occupying a public office and he has drawing allowances from the public purse. What gives him the nerve to stop people discussing his poor leadership when he and his cronies had the audacity to even form a parallel football league in 2011? If the Kalusha Bwalya executive was petty as Andrew is today, would we even be here today?
Granted, if the results improve on the pictch, no football fan in Zambia would criticize his leadership but as long as Chipolopolo boys continue losing to Eswatini, he should expect more noise at higher decibels from us.
We are football fans and we make noise all the time, if he cannot stand the noise from football fans, let him get out of Football House now, follow his Micho or take a holiday at some island somewhere to enjoy his peace.

PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LUSAKA – 20th June – As KBN TV, we are appalled with the drunken behaviour exhibited through a video clip that has gone viral on social media and staged by one of our part-time presenters during what should have been the main news bulletin last night. As a young television station, we work with a very highly talented and professional team, with a noble character and we owe the success of unbroken broadcasting for the last two years to such gallant men and women. Members of the public may wish to know that KBN TV like any other institution, has very well established grievance procedures for all members of staff through which they can channel their complaints. Therefore, last night’s behaviour by Kabinda Kalimina is out of character and does not represent who we are as a station. We strongly condemn that despicable behaviour and urge members of the public to treat that ‘One-Night stunt of Fame’ with the contempt it deserves. As management, we are carrying out investigations to determine how a drunken parttime presenter found himself on air unabated and disciplinary action will be taken against anyone who may have been party to the scheme.
