My Brother Ramon and I were attached at the hip growing up. He left for the service when he was 17 because it was his only choice to survive . It was the service or prison. We hated to part ways, but I pushed him along and promised him I would survive. He passed away in October of last year.

The images and memories of my past continue to haunt me. I see it all around me. I visit the abused children in shelters and hospitals. There is no end to the parents who find it so easy inflict pain on the helpless; on the innocent . I have nightmares remembering the case of 8 year old Gabriel Fernandez. The hprrific abuse by his mom and boyfriend. I ask myself "Why?"

MY MOTHER WAS A BEAUTIFUL, STRONG AND INDEPENDENT WOMEN. SHE WAS A REBEL AHEAD OF HER TIME,; REFUSING TO CONFORM HER LIFE TO THE RULES OF MAN. SHE WAS A FREE SPIRIT; ENJOYING EVERYDAY AS IF IT WAS HER LAST. SHE KNEW SHE WAS SICK , BUT WAS DETERMINED TO ALLOW ANYTHING TO SLOW HER DOWN. SHE DIED OF BREAST CANCER AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 36. SHE DIED ON HER OWN TERMS NOT ALLOWING ANY DOCTOR TO TELL HER HOW TO ACCEPT TREATMENT. SHE KNEW TREATMENT WOULD PROLONG HER LIFE IN EXCRUCIATING PAIN AND MIND INDUCED REALITY. SHE WAS MY MOTHER, FREE TO MAKE HER OWN DECISIONS AND CHOOSE HER OWN WAY TO DIE.SHE LOVED TO LAUGH, AND SING AND DANCE.
