Enjoy this bit of warming. Long range forecasts are showing another Arctic air mass dominating the U.S., beginning around the 2nd week of February. This could bring more cold, snowy weather to the Midsouth. Again, these are long range computer models, so we'll have to see the closer we get.

The next system we will have to contend with will be on Thursday

The models show the low diving through Arkansas and across Central Mississippi. These are normally the tracks that we see our largest snow totals in West Tennessee. Other factors will determine the exact amount, including availability of moisture and strength of the low. Right now, an additional 3 to 5 inches would not be out of the question. It will remain cold up until next week, with slight warming possible on Wednesday with forecast highs just over freezing

Why do I see snowfall on the radar, but none is falling?

This phenomenon is referred to as Virga

The atmosphere is so cold and dry at different levels, that precipitation that falls out of the clouds(as shown on radar) evaporates before it can hit the ground

Once more moisture enters the atmosphere, then the precipitation will reach the ground.

The low is diving deeper than original models suggested. Latest runs have the heaviest snow in Southern Arkansas, Northern Mississippi and Eastern Tennessee. Portions of West Tennessee, South of I-40 can see upwards of 6 inches. North of I-40 may see 1 to 3.

National Weather Service has portions of the Midsouth under a Winter Storm Warning. Confidence is high that a major Winter Storm will impact our area.

Not only will it snow, frigid temperatures will accompany the precipitation. Lows in the single digits and negative wind chills

Exact track of the low pressure will determine how much snow we will see

Models are consistently predicting in the range of 3 to 8 inches with likely higher totals that see heavier snowfall.

This is what we have to deal with today. Tornado warning north of Memphis for a possible spin up tornado in the main line of storms.

This portion of the line is riding the warm front east-northeast.

6:15AM CST

A line of thunderstorms should move into our area between 7-9am with heavy rain and Gusty winds(35-55mph).

The severe threat is low this morning but not zero.

The dry line is currently situated around Memphis stretching past Savannah and is unlikely to move farther north than Jackson. This will limit most of the severe chances to South of Jackson.
