RGMS End of Year Retrospective 2023

RGMS has long spoken of the ineffable experience that arises out of transcendent musical engagement. We’ve spoken of ways to carry that experience beyond its inception, its edges of embodiment, to connect it symbolically into our being outside of space and time. But what of the characteristics of that ineffability itself? Can it be hinted at in words? in concepts? What is to be said of the elusive phenomena that comprise such a mysterious experience? Might we give them a name to better know their features? To dialogue with the beings that inhabited that moment of great release? Those curious altered states of being…

There’s ghosts in the machines -
or are there? How could there be?
I sighed, I wept on the shores of a thousand placeless smiles,
teeth glimmering like the cheshire’s.
Then the ghost awoke in me
and these new eyes perceived the infinite stairs on which I wound.
No longer passing through endless Kansases,
shortness of breath transformed into the one long inhale from the edge of the universe.
Angelic murmurings became a whisper and without warning spoke to me:
“Fly to the lands of abyme and find the bloom of night.
Fly to the heart of time and see the one without eyes.”
There the great cosmic body without organs, shifted its starry light to at last smile upon this great unfolding.
The wondrous ghost of life, playfully haunting it’s kin with the ancient drama of this entropic vie.

As a part of music collective and record label RGMS' summer concert series Sean Kiley and Iminah Kani will perform an hour long ambient-meditative set at the Johnson Street Bridge East Plaza Victoria, BC.

Based on the unreleased RGMS album 'Garden of Noesis' this performance will include live processed electronics and improvisations with sitar, bowed guitar, singing bowls, and more.

Join us in this hour long transformative sound journey, which will focus on revitalizing the Solar Plexus as we enter the season of Leo and strive to transform ourselves into the fullest expression of our natal sun. Compositionally, this piece explores multi-melodic counterpoint and motivic dissolution, as well as extended metamorphosis and amnesiatic recapitulation.

Ben Kinsinger // MEET THE COLLECTIVE

There is a realm beyond the knowledge of man:
Beneath the darkness, under endless sea.
Where undulating currents carry 'cross
Toward other unknowns Bahamut the fish.
Upon behemoth's back abides a bull:
Four thousand eyes and ears and mouths and tongues
Four thousand feet weather the weight above:
A rugged crag of ruby to hold up
An Angel, Atlas, Shu, Atlantis' King
Who bears the fathoms over what's beneath

When heaven fell to sink Atlantean shores,
Their wisdoms scattered - winds wrapped up in sails,
The Babeling remnant's memories turned to dreams,
Which buried 'neath Bahamut's scaly mass,
Became a song, sought after by the bards,
Who, though they'll never know the fish in full,
Traverse its shadow, blind in every sense
To glimpse in madness fraction of the form
That bears what bears the bearer of our World

Ben Kinsinger was born and raised in a Norman Rockwell painting.

When Ben was crowned King of the Chicago River, Bobby was at the coronation. Bobby approached Ben with a single question.

"Is there music in the water?"

Ben answered

"Yes. And sometimes human s**t."

James Layton // MEET THE COLLECTIVE

'James Layton is a composer, musician and visual artist based in London, UK. His work often explores non-climactic forms, which slowly unfold and focus on the juxtaposition of progression and stasis. His use of patterns, permutations and repetition aims to draw listeners into the music, while exploring ideas of time and memory. This work is often informed by his interest in visual art, particularly the works of Agnes Martin, Sol Lewitt and Bridget Riley. Among his acoustic writing, he also works with lo-fi electronics in the form of cassette tapes, guitar effects pedals, audio and video tape, creating long-form compositions and installations, often with a combination of acoustic and electronic elements.'

Sean Kiley // MEET THE COLLECTIVE
.. Since then, Sean has clumsily began to attempt to decipher the outlandish inscriptions as recorded by Bobby. He has hastily begun to learn many instruments such as guitar, saxophone, piano, drums, etc. so as to not arouse suspicion for his stolen insights, and intends to parade around the ideas imparted to Bobby Goldberg as if they were his own until fate catches up with him. The rgms is the first full fledged confused attempt by Sean to put some of these elysian musings into practice. Previously, he has worked on encoding mysterious messages into notated music at various universities, capturing and analyzing the music of many peers to gain insight into the supposed divine spark of music, and wildly improvising, hoping to accidentally stumble upon the deeper meaning within Bobby's manuscripts.
Only time will tell.

Meditation Objects, Supplements, and Sequences (MOSS) is an ongoing series, which aims at exploring the breadth of meditative experiences possible within sonic environments. Here, with Volume II rgms strives towards developing a cohesive whole, in lieu of the individual ca. 10-12 minute experiences produced for Volume I.

MOSS Vol II Methodology
A Sonic Journey from:
Human Sounds - anything man-made (machinery, bodily, cars, tools, breath, speaking (non-communicative), etc.)

To Non-Human Sounds - anything in nature, which takes place without the influence of humans (ocean, river, birds, wind, trees, etc.)

The Journey from Human Sounds to Non-Human Sounds takes place over the course of the whole album.

In conjunction with the overall structure of the album, the tracks themselves have their own internal structural development, which consists of a movement from Large to Small or Small to Large sounds.
The field recordings made use of in each composition ideally transition from Larger, more collective sounds, to Smaller more individual/atomized sounds, or vice versa.

Davis Connors // MEET THE COLLECTIVE
..Thus, Tony was sent back to scour through time for the stolen manuscripts. In the era before the Great Phoenix, ca. 2017, he encountered the master soundscapist Davis Connors. Having suspected an acquaintance of Davis, named Sean, to be in power of some mighty aesthetic force outside of time, Tony implicated himself as a mentor/daimon to Davis so as to catch a glimpse of the wild horses that so seemed to steer the chariot of rgms. Tony bequeathed to Davis the sacred rhythms on taut animal hides and the technomancy of aural replication, all of which Sean recognized as necessary elements for the kairosis of the manuscripts lifted from Bobby and forged a partnership with Davis. Patiently, Tony observes as the rgms unfolds and the coroner gathers his army.

Timo Pehkonen // MEET THE COLLECTIVE

'Timo Pehkonen’s current style is explorative of pure sounds formed out of multilayered compositional techniques derived from a wide range of ideas. Some of these ideas include: -the abandonment of emotion during the genesis of any given work and welcoming emotion with open arms upon its completion -twelve tone equal temperament superimposed on the harmonic series -time as a calculation amidst time as an experience -minimalizing orchestration down to only sine waves and white noise -embracing “unwanted” sounds -creating musical blueprints The human response to the inner workings of our natural and unnatural surroundings is a key aspect in Pehkonen's works. The attention to detail in his compositional process is meticulously executed while the music itself finds a way to loosen it's hinges, giving the listener an opportunity to experience deep reflection.'

Aaron Stearns // Meet the collective

'And so it began even before they started. Born just out of a small town, northwest of Bakarak, Rayon confirmed into isolation. Pandemics aside, mental isometrics amidst isolation hasn’t really been anything new for Rayon. “It’s all a matter of mind over matter when nothing’s really the matter...” declares Rayon in, As a Matter of Fact, fictional publication of this narrative. “I never really had fun doing anything. That’s why and when I became a writer.” Now, listen, it’s easy to harp on the heart strings of Bobby, after all, he’s the reason they're here in the first place, but by gone it, sometimes tough love is a necessity. When Rayon shook Bobby’s hand, he felt as though a g*dly bolt connected all the synapses of his “brain” while completely wiping out his memories, his passions, his entire world. This was a turning point for Rayon. This was a point at which to turn. But, obnoxiously, which way? All in all, Rayon enjoys most auditory moments. He’s confided into phonetic confines which many would find many cons in; but rest easy, he does. Come nightfall, he’s back in front of his many rectangles, deciding which one may resonate most appropriately depending on how bright the sun was that day.'

Somewhere in between background noise and a symphony, in between the ocean and your open vein… an object, or new furniture of sorts – a supplement, which opens the room for the breeze to come in – a sequence, guiding you through new land. Straddling the four cardinal directions, earthly meditations, to dive deep into the waters of the unconscious, in search of the eternal flame, glowing like a scarlet lotus on the ocean’s floor, oh to breathe in the depths through consummated eucharist in harmony with the logos. Moss, the great mother, welcomes us unto it to soothe our wounds, then gently guide us back towards the path. Here we are, taking a moment to lay in its bed, amidst a journey which fractures into ten thousand directions, spiraling always towards the mandate of the heart.

Meditation Objects, Supplements, and Sequences or MOSS, is a curated collaborative album from members of rgms consisting of tracks designed for meditation. This album was inspired in response to the seemingly rather monotonous tone of most meditation music found online today. Here, the aim is to explore a wide variety of states of being possible within the meditative posture. Herein, we have tracks, which lilt us in a gentle state of at onement, others which guide us through strange lands and circular quests, yet others still which take us to that part of ourselves we have not visited in a while, and while our initial urge may be to resist, the vibrations coax us to stay and have a look around for a little while, until we might find this once unfavorable place not at all too unbecoming.
