We are thrilled to partner with the San Diego Italian Film Festival and Little Fish Comic Book School in presenting the premier launch of Art Across the Lines, a panel on our new graphic novel on Voyage of The St. Louis. Join us November 18th!

Welcome to the first event of Art Across the Lines.

In a culture in which pictures dominate the story landscape, how do we learn to read, think and cross between cultures with these stories?

Our project takes a step in our understanding of storytelling through comics and between cultures by focusing on how these stories are written, shared, and translated.

Join Antony Shugaar (Red Car Press), Alonso Nunez (Little Fish Comic Book Studio), and Antonio Iannotta (SDIFF), moderated by Victor Laruccia (SDIFF), focusing on a graphic novel, Voyage of the St. Louis, exploring the medium of comics, the intersections of graphic novel and journalism, and storytelling across borders.

Presented by:
Red Car Press, Little Fish Comic Book Studio, and SDIFF

With Support of:
Museum of Photographic Arts and San Diego State Italian Studies

Admission is FREE! Reserve your ticket here; https://sdiff-monthly-series.eventive.org/schedule/615d1f5a2af1370044127c8a

Passengers aboard the St. Louis, May 13-June 17, 1939. They were being returned to the port of Antwerp, and then on to host countries. 254 of the 937 passengers were eventually murdered by the N**i killing machine. We dedicate the Voyage of the St. Louis to them and to all refugees seeking safe harbor.

As the St. Louis passengers prepare to debark in Cuba, the Cuban government demands a new and sizable tax, but only a few can pay. Family and friends already in Cuba gather alongside the ship for a few words before the ship steams toward Florida, only to be turned away again. Their hopes are shattered.

June 6 was established by the US Congress as the date of remembrance for the 254 Jewish passengers aboard the St. Louis, who upon being returned to Europe, were murdered by N**i Germany. In February, 2012, the United States Department of State formally apologized for turning away the St. Louis passengers in a ceremony attended by 14 survivors.

St. Louis survivor Dr. Sol Messinger was 6 when he boarded the ship bound for Cuba with his parents—they were fleeing N**ism and seeking refuge in the US. In the book's interview with Dr. Messinger, he talks about the simple pleasures of a child not knowing the seriousness of their situation: “I had my seventh birthday on the ship, so I was just a kid. What I really remember was that there was a swimming pool on the boat and I had never been in a swimming pool.”

Captain Gustav Schröder was the experienced sea captain of the St Louis, which sailed under the N**i flag and included N**i crew members. Schröder was a deeply principled man who did not support N**i ideology. Had Captain Schröder returned the St. Louis to Hamburg as ordered, it is almost certain that all the passengers would have been detained. Schröder was named “Righteous Among the Nations” for his heroic acts to prevent an even greater loss of life.

On May 13th, 1939, the St. Louis set sail from Hamburg, Germany with 937 Jewish passengers on board. This followed the events of November 9, 1938, Kristallnacht, just 6 months prior. This is where the story of the St. Louis begins.

In May 1939, six months after the N**is organized Kristallnacht, The Night of Broken Glass, the German transatlantic liner St. Louis departed for Cuba with 937 refugees aboard. As the N**is tightened their grip on Germany, these refugees left everything behind, and faced an uncertain future.
