The Dystopian Realities of Corruption and Exploitation in Mineral-Rich Nations

I imagine a place full of diverse nations, the unnamed placed exhibits a stark simulacrum of misgovernance, despite being endowed with vast mineral resources. The leaders, blinded by personal ambitions, exploits these resources without regard for long-term sustainability. Instead of developing a diversified economy, the focus is narrowed on immediate gains, undermining prosperity. Corruption at the highest level exacerbates the situation, leading to an atrocious wealth gap and blatant disrespect for human rights. Local communities suffer environmental degradation, while profits from mining activities, which are siphoned off for personal aggrandizement. The leader's myopic vision thus not only undermines the nation's potential but also impoverishes the people who bear the brunt of this ill-governance.

Ticking down to the citizen, which has long been driving by their leader. the citizen by their personal ambitions, is fervently exploiting the rich resources their self, that the country provides, neglecting any considerations for long-term sustainability. The pursuit of immediate gains shadows his conscience, and he is blind to its impact on the future generations. Their selfish interests are so deeply ingrained that the concept of communal wealth and shared prosperity is barely perceivable in their vision. Undue exploitation of the resources expresses their disregard for the well-being of the nation and their fellow citizen. Corruption, a narcissistic trait, has become their second nature, infiltrating every move they make. The fierce pursuit of personal prosperity is ruthlessly driving them to even exploit each other, breaking the social fabric of trust and unity. The resources that could bring prosperity to all are being siphoned off solely for personal gain, leaving the rest in despair.

Could this be the reality of Africans, particularly.. Nigerians ? with its fellow countries in the region ?.

My imagination of the perceived reality, if true, is a dangerous cycle perpetuating a setting of precedence for others to follow the same path. A lust for quick riches which not only is it rapidly breeding a culture of exploitation, but where sustainability and collective good will be a mere afterthoughts.

It's a stark reminder of how blinded ambition can suffocate the concept of shared growth and long-term stability. Africans must go spiritual in the accumulation of knowledge and wisdom to be free from material enslavement.

Thank you.

Clearview is the most powerful form of facial recognition technology ever created, according to the Times. With more than 3 billion photos scraped surreptitiously from social media profiles and websites, its image database is almost seven times the size of the FBI’s. Its mobile app can match names to faces with a tap of a touchscreen. The technology is already being integrated into augmented reality glasses so people can identify almost anyone they look at.

Clearview has contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, BuzzFeed reported earlier this year, and FBI agents, members of Customs and Border Protection, and hundreds of police officers at departments nationwide are among its users.

Even if you’ve never heard of Clearview, you likely have an online presence — maybe a friend or a relative has posted a photo of you to Facebook — which means you’re probably in its database. Clearview’s CEO and co-founder, Cam-Hoan Ton-That, and his associates chose to mass-violate social media policies against scraping accounts to build an image warehouse of unprecedented size, as several outlets have noted recently. To help drum up more business, Clearview recruited Jessica Medeiros Garrison, a former executive director of the Republican Attorneys General Association and a Daily Caller contributor. The company also retained Paul Clement, the former U.S. solicitor general and perennial right-wing consideration for the Supreme Court, as its attorney.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies were signing up for Clearview: the Indiana State Police, the New York State Police, the Chicago Police Department, the Atlanta Police Department, police departments in New Jersey and Florida, and the Department of Homeland Security. So did the Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety, a contract that has not been previously reported. Clement sent a letter to the Atlanta Police Department last summer stating that “over 200 law enforcement agencies around the nation” were using Clearview. That number would triple within months, according to The New York Times.

Clement provided a legal cover for police to sidestep civil rights concerns, writing that Clearview didn’t violate the Fourth Amendment because the mere act of posting anything to social media removed any expectation of privacy.

Clement also anticipated the argument that facial recognition has baked-in racial bias problems. A majority of algorithms tested in 2019 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology falsely identify female and darker-skinned faces at much higher rates than white male faces. Clearview was simply more accurate than existing technology, Clement wrote. (The company appears to have shunned an independent audit of its technology and did not participate in the NIST test.) Moreover, he added, Clearview used “non-race-based algorithms” to minimize bias. Clement offered no evidence in his letter to support either claim.

Being able to recover and use waste heat can raise efficiency and cut costs by extracting more energy from the same amount of fuel. In the case of an electricity or desalination plant running on concentrated solar power, the TESS can capture heat during the day and release it at night to keep the plant running. Argonne's work to develop the system is funded by DOE's Solar Energy Technologies Office.
Argonne's thermal energy storage system, or TESS, was originally developed to capture and store surplus heat from concentrated solar power facilities. It is also suitable for a variety of commercial applications, including desalination plants, combined heat and power (CHP) systems, industrial processes, and heavy-duty trucks.
An innovative system currently being developed at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory to store heat and release it for use when needed,
Researchers have demonstrated the TESS to operate in temperatures over 700°C (1,292°F). Its high energy density makes it smaller and more flexible than commonly used sensible heat storage systems, which rely on raising and lowering a material's temperature. The technology won a 2019 R&D 100 award, and researchers are now working to integrate it within CHP systems from Capstone Turbine Corporation to boost heat recovery.

……………………………………………………………………………………… Hackers stole personal data from more than a half million users of an Italy-based email service and posted the purloined information for sale online.

The at email.it were hacked two years ago. They contained , questions and email contents. "Unfortunately, we must confirm that we have suffered a hacker attack," Email. It said in a statement to ZDNet, which broke the story Sunday.

The hackers, who obtained data from servers dating to 2007, put the information up for sale on the dark web this year, on Feb. 1.

In a statement the hackers posted on their site, they appear to view the act as part of just another transaction. "We breached Email.it Datacenter more than 2 years ago and we plant ourself like an APT [Advanced Persistent Threat]," the hackers, who call themselves NN (No Name) Hacking Group, said. "We took any possible sensitive data from their server and after we choosen [sic] to give them a chance to patch their holes asking for a little bounty." The email.it company refused to pay the "little bounty" and instead notified postal police authorities. The exact extortion amount was not revealed.

Following their failure to blackmail the company, NN listed their stolen data. They say it includes 46 databases filled with sensitive about 600,000 users of the free email service. The hackers are listing the databases at prices ranging from 0.5 to 3 per file. That translates to between $3,500 and $22,000.

Officials at email.it said no financial information from users was stored on any of their servers.
"The attack only concerned a server with administrative data" such as billing addresses, officials said. They also said paid subscribers of their business service were not affected.

Researchers devise a way to perform legal functions with blockchain technology.
"Blockchains in some ways are a double-edged sword. But this kind of system signals the dawn of a new economic paradigm that must be embraced and explored rather than feared and ignored," concluded Matsushima. "We have found a way to satisfy agreements without traditional legal enforcement or the long-term reciprocal relationships which might ordinarily keep the players honest. A digital court could be built on current blockchain platforms such as , and it could happen right now."

However, technologies have received bad press for the fact that as they are decentralized, they are therefore unregulated and could be used for nefarious purposes as well as benign uses as intended. This digital , the admit, would be open to the same issue. However, they stress that as with every emerging technology, it is up to existing regulators to work with and users to collectively find solutions to this.

Professors Hitoshi Matsushima from the Department of Economics at the University of Tokyo and Shunya Noda from the Vancouver School of at the University of British Columbia, in , came up with this mechanism which uses blockchain to settle legal disputes without the need for an otherwise costly legal process. This is an extension to existing ideas for smart contracts which exist without central administration.

China becomes world's top patent filer: UN
China last year became the world leader in international patent filings, unseating the United States which had held the top spot for more than four decades, the UN said Tuesday.

A record 265,800 international patent applications were filed last year, a hike of 5.2-percent from 2018, the World Intellectual Property Organisation said in its annual report.

WIPO's complex system of registering international patents involves multiple categories.

In the main category—the Patent Cooperation Treaty, or PCT—China topped the ranking for the first time, with 58,990 applications.

It thus overtook the United States, which filed 57,840 applications, and which has topped the PCT ranking since the system took effect in 1978.

China and the United States were followed by Japan, Germany and South Korea as the world's top patent application filers, WIPO found.

Online grocery services struggle to meet spike in demand.
"It's kind of becoming more challenging to put a meal together," said Paul Smyth, a software engineer who lives near Manchester, England, where the online groceries industry is particularly advanced. He's a longtime customer of British online-only supermarket Ocado.

At US, delivery orders surged as millions of Americans stayed home. even before some cities and states imposed "stay at home" orders, Instacart, Amazon, and Walmart grocery delivery sales all jumped by at least two-thirds from the year before, according to Earnest Research. As a result, customers in hard-hit. in New York City, is a waiting days to schedule deliveries that usually take just hours.

In China, where the outbreak originated early this year, ubiquitous smartphone food apps helped millions get through months of strict lockdown. Even so, e-commerce giant Alibaba's supermarket chain Freshippo reportedly recruited laid off restaurant workers for temporary staff as more customers shifted to ordering by app and average basket sizes jumped in the first half of February.
also is traditional supermarkets with their own less sophisticated online operations, using people to pick items off shelves.
Intention to hire more people to solve delivery problems, companies started hiring mechanism. British supermarket Morrison's is hiring 2,500 extra drivers and pickers. Amazon is looking for 100,000 more staff, while Instacart plans to add 300,000 gig workers, more than doubling the number of people whom do the picking and delivering of groceries.
Still, Instacart's workers have struggled to meet efficiency targets, as stores impose distancing rules and business surges.

That highlights the main downside to human store pickers.

Intel to unveil 10-core 5.3GHz processor.

The top-of-the-line processor is the i9-10900K that will feature 10 cores and 20 threads. It will have a boost speed of up to 5.3 GHz, achieved with assistance from Intel's Thermal Velocity Boost technology. TVB kicks in when a CPU is sufficiently cooled and power is available for the boost.
The processor, which replaces the i9-9900K, is up to 30 percent faster than the old one and will compete with AMD's Ryzen lineup.
Intel says the processor will offer "elite real-world performance," claiming "high frame rates in your favorite games, even under extreme multi-tasking workloads." The i9-9900K should perform faster than AMD's Ryzen 3700X and somewhat slower than the R9 3900X, according to leaked specs.
Two other processors were named in the Intel leak: The i7-10700K boasting 8 cores, 16 threads and speeds up to 5.1GHz and the i5-10600K with 6 cores, 12 threads and top speed of 4.8GHz.
Prices for the i9, i7 and i5 are estimated at $550, $288 and $177 respectively.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Intel is presently at the turning point: they’re halfway through the release of their 10th generation processors. The pressure is on. What will they call their next generation? A new Intel processor has appeared in the 3DMark database called the i7-1185G7. If it truly is a member of the 11th generation, then Intel will be the only computer hardware company to have developed basic numeracy.
In name, the Core i7-1185G7 is a flagship Tiger Lake processor. Tiger Lake is the successor to Ice Lake and a response to AMD’s new Renoir APUs. Like the Renoir APUs, Tiger Lake combines a CPU and a GPU on one chip to optimize efficiency in graphic-intensive tasks, like gaming. Like Renoir again, the combined CPU and GPU performance is enough for esports titles and lightweight video editing, but only just competitive with budget discrete solutions.
According to the variety of appearances the i7-1185G7 has put in (under codenames, until now) it makes use of four Willow Cove CPU cores and 96 Xe GPU EUs. CPU clock speeds remain unknown however the “5” in its name suggests the i7-1185G7 will use 25W, so it’ll probably have a base clock just under 3 GHz and a boost clock around 5 GHz. The GPU is expected to operate at up to 1.5 GHz

On the surface, Skype's link-based Meet Now seems somewhat similar to Zoom's Meeting ID feature, in the way it easily lets anyone join in on the conversation with just a small bit of information. Although its security measures are likely more robust than Zoom's, Skype Meet Now calls could still be susceptible to 'Zoom bombing,' and it remains to be seen if this feature gets popular enough to put Skype back on the map.
