The one thing in life you can control is what kind of shape you're in. There's no excuse to be a weak, overweight dad. None.

(Hell, there's no excuse to be a "strong" overweight dad.)

Don't mistake how much weight you push in the gym for your greatest wealth asset. Health.

Carrying 50 lbs of fat but still lifting heavy still mens your 50 lbs overweight.

2 points here:

[1] You alone decide what food you eat.

No, healthy food isn't "more expensive" than unhealthy food -- especially when you factor in the health problems and medical bills/medications that junk/processed foods will have on your health later.

[2] You alone decide if you workout or not. No, you don't "need" a gym.

You need desire.

And that desire is caused by the fact that your current situation is MORE painful than putting I'm the work.

Keep in mind...

There are a million resources online...many which are free, and some don't require a gym -- so your problem may not be an informational problem.

It's assessing your situation and schedule to see how you can make it work.

You juggle your work schedule, kids sports, watching the game, and time out with the boys.

It's a matter of priorities. Not lack of info.

Don't be a little bitch.

Get in the weight room.

Do the hard things.

The exercises you want to skip.

Just because you're having a s**tty week or a bad day or "just not feeling it"

Doesn't mean you get a "pass".

The weight room is always there.

It never lies.

It builds your "almost cocky" confidence
..and humbles you.

At the same time.

It breaks you down and builds you back up.

It doesn't give pats on the back or high fives.

But it does give perspective of what storms you're truly capable of enduring
..but only if you're willing to do the work.

Want to just "go through the motions" when you're there?

Then get out of the way.

There's no participation trophies here.

Participating only makes you good at one thing.

Not winning.

In the fitness space, strength is king.

It builds muscle, allows you to push more weight, aids in everyday tasks (like bringing 17 bags of groceries in the house on one trip), and actually is superior for fat loss than regular cardio.

I know what you’re thinking…

Doesn’t cardio burn more calories?

Yes it can, if you do a ton of it.

So if you were to do 60 minutes of cardio at low intensity or a moderate pace, you’ll burn a decent amount.

(I don't know about you, but I don't want to walk on a treadmill and stare at the wall for 60 minutes if I don't have to.)

What if I told you, you could burn calories AND get stronger and build muscle at the same time – all while keeping your metabolism pumping throughout the rest of the day?

Now I’ve got your attention.

Good.

Here’s 5 ways you can maximize your fat loss efforts without doing cardio.

[1] Get on a STRUCTURED lifting program. Going to the gym and just doing whatever you feel like doing that day will only get you so far. You HAVE to get on a program with some sort of structure that aligns with what you're looking to accomplish. Checking off the "I go to the gym" box doesn't mean you're going to get results. It just means yo go to the gym.

[2] Lift weights. HARD. The key here is INTENSITY. Don’t just go through the motions. Shoot to hit failure or just below failure on your last 2-3 sets for each exercise. One way to make sure you're training hard enough is to lift with a friend or invest in a coach.

[3] Take short breaks. No more 5 minute breaks in between sets. Stop scrolling your phone or chatting with your buddies. It’s a waste of time and brings your heart rate down. Ideally you’d want your heart rate elevated throughout the workout. Shoot for 60-90 second breaks in between sets.

[4] Add a strength-based conditioning exercise in between sets. A few of the guys that I coach online opt to use a portion of their break time to add a low intensity conditioning exercise to boost metabolism and keep their heart rate up. Use “weights based” exercises that actually help boost strength. Think kettlebell swings, battling rope, medicine ball slams, sledge hammer sings, tire flips, etc. If your break is 90 seconds, maybe use the first 30 seconds of that to hit one of these exerises.

[5] Track your calories -- everyday. Yes, I know it's a pain in the ass. Yes, I know you don't want to track forever. (You won't have to.) But answer this questions for me -- "How is NOT tracking your calories working out for you?" See, you want what's "convenient". You want what's "easy". You want the end result without taking responsibility for where you are now and what it's going to actually take to get there. In order to get the results you've never gotten, you're going to have to do what you've never done.

Leave this place better than how it was when you showed up?

Impact your kids.

Teach them what it takes to win.

More importantly, teach them about getting off the ground after a loss.

Show them what to do when adversity comes barreling through the door unannounced.

Take them camping.

Teach them to fish.

Dust off the old glove and have a catch.

(Bonus points if you're exhausted from work and do it anyway.)

Teach them to defend themselves and stand up for others who can't.

Surprise them and get home from work early.

Show up to their recitals and games.

Regularly.

(Yes, they actually do look for you.)

Coach their sports teams.

Have them carry their own gear.

Make them compete for a starting spot on the depth chart.

Cook them breakfast
..with extra bacon.

Pick them up from school one day.

Teach them how to change a tire.

Show them nothing worth having comes without a price.

Then, make them earn their keep.

Show them it’s okay to talk it out with people they don’t agree with.

Teach them it's not okay to start fights
..but it's perfectly fine to finish them.

Encourage them to question things that don't make sense.

Teach them gun safety.

Then take them plinking.

Bring them to the mountaintop that is their comfort zone.

Then hold their hand and nudge them over the edge.

Take them to the park.

Have them introduce themselves to kids they don’t know.

Show them it’s actually cooler to sit with the kid who eats lunch alone.

Hug them.

Often.

Tell them they make you proud.

Tell them you love them.

Then, tell them both again.

And, MOST importantly...

Make sure they know they can come to you for anything...

No. Matter. What.

For most of us, faster than we can keep up with.

Kids have more information than they can process, at their fingertips.

Literally.

Take the reins and show them the way – or this twisted world will.

Not "kinda" stop for a while -- just to pick back up where you left off a few days later
..but some full-on, back-against-the-wall, "no way out" commitment.

See, as kids it's pounded into our heads that quitters NEVER win.

WRONG.

When something no longer serves in creating your legacy, QUIT.

You'll start stacking wins like John Rambo stacks bodies.

Magic happens.

You start to "become".

Strong.

Confident.

Aligned.

You win. More.

It's inevitable.

You're invincible.

Here's what it means to quit for purpose...

Want to get in shape? Say "NO" to the stuff that won't get you there.

Want to start a business? Say "NO" to surrounding yourself with people who say you can't.

Want to master a craft? Say "NO" to watching videos and reading about it, and start getting bruised and battered by actually "doing".

See how simple this is?

But, I get it.

I understand
..because I've been there before, too.

The pain you experience by continuing on the current path is much more bearable than the uncertainty of blazing a new one in jungle of uncertainty .

What if you fail?

(Good. Get the f**k up, and lick your wounds.)

You were born to be great

I usually get to my daughter's school early to pick her up and avoid the car line.

People wait in their cars for anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes
..and sit there, scrolling their phone.

What if you used the small pockets of time in your day to get some sort of strength training in?

If you did this every day, imagine where you'd be 30 days from now.

(It doesn't take much to get off your ass and sweat.)

Today I parked the car, got out with a Kettlebell and Jump Rope and got to work.

Heres the 15 minute strength circuit I ate for lunch today.

Feel free to steal it.

100 x Jump Rope
1 x Single Arm KB Carry (50 yd/53 lb)
100 x Jump Rope
50 x Bowyweight Squats
100 x Jump Rope
40 x KB Rows (each arm @ 53 lb)
100 Jump Rope
30 x Push Up
100 x Jump Rope
20 x KB High Pull
100 x Jumpe Rope
10 x KB Sn**ch (5 each arm @ 53 lb)

Just enough to get the heart rate up.
..and most importantly checks the "conditioning box" for the day.

So that's exactly what we're gonna do.

Remember when they're young, they view what's important through YOUR lens.

If taking care of yourself is important. It will be important to them.

If your "important things" lead to you being lazy and out of shape, they'll follow suit.

Make it count. Remember, they think you're Superman.
