Starting in the 1950s, self-propelled Budd-built Rail Diesel Cars (RDCs) could be found across North America. They were used in branch and mainline service, and could work together in a train or as just one solitary car. Today they can be found running on many tourist trains, but on only two passenger railroads: the Westside Express Service commuter train in Portland, Ore., where RDCs provide backup service, and VIA Rail’s Sudbury-to-White River remote service...

When was the last time you saw a new rail siding being installed at one of the hundreds of new warehouses springing up throughout the Northeast?

The area surrounding Allentown and Bethlehem was quickly transformed as seven colorful legacy lines came under Conrail control in 1976. Over the next 24 years, this industrial region of eastern Pennsylvania would go through its own transformation, affecting traffic patterns for years to come. Historian and photographer Olev Taremae explores these changes through colorful photos and detailed text.

Let's keep the momentum moving forward!

Since October 9th, the campaign to restore New York Central steam locomotive No. 3001 has raised $133,775 toward the first goal of $500,000. In addition, we now have over $1,000 in recurring monthly donations and over 300 supporters have pledged donations of over $50,000! With 186 days left to meet our first deadline, you can learn more about the effort, make a pledge, or donate here: americanloco.org. Thank you to our very first supporters, both large and small. Some checks have ranged between $3001 and $10,000!

Railpace Newsmagazine

Railpace Newsmagazine was founded by Tom Nemeth, Denis Connell, and Bill Chaplik in 1982 with the idea of presenting Northeastern U.S.-based news along with the finest railroad photography in a high quality publication. Railpace Newsmagazine is sold by many well-stocked hobby shops across the country and is also offered to readers through an annual subscription. In January 2020, Railpace Newsmagazine joined the White River Productions family of quality railroading publications.

Railpace is “The Northeast's Own Rail Newsmagazine,” focusing primarily on prototype railroading from the Northeastern United States, an area which includes all of New England and eastern Canada (Ontario and east); southward through Virginia, and westward through West Virginia and Ohio. We generally don’t publish photos and news from outside this area, unless it is of significant interest to our readers, and directly related to Northeastern railroading. We cover main line freight and passenger railroading, short lines, commuter, transit, tourist and museum operations, and historic preservation through our network of columnists and contributions from our readers.
