Ken Camera Continues to Bash Public Safety; Solution for Outdated Fire Gear is to “Let it Burn” -
City Councilman Ken Camera has always been very vocal about his opinions and stances, especially those regarding public safety, such as his views on the Geneva Fire Department and Geneva Police Department. His comments at the City Council meeting last night have caused a lot of people to vocalize their disapproval of what he had to say.
The new Geneva Fire Department Chief, Del Parrotta, had just presented on the department and addressed some concerns. One of the mains concerns he had mentioned was the outdated and unsafe fire gear. Kens response to this was “then let it burn, don’t go in” and rather to “stand back and put water on it.” Obviously this is not a possible or safe option, and definitely not the answer the Fire Department wanted.
Chief Parrotta had already mentioned the importance of increasing the moral of the firefighters, who have voiced feeling unsupported by council before. This isn’t the first time they’ve been denied the budget they were hoping for or have been treated with a lack of respect through comments made my members of the city council. However, many believe this was too far as Ken’s comment once again dismisses the actual problem and neglects the safety of the public.
While the City of Geneva is lucky to have very few bad fires, the reason that is possible is because of the quick efficient effort of the firefighters themselves, by going in and putting the fire out before it becomes something larger and more deadly. While as citizens we are lucky to be protected by such a well trained, diverse group, it may lead to misconceptions that are fires are uncommon or can be put out without having to go in.
Frankly, that is not the case, and the public is generally unaware of the hundreds of fires a year that are unheard of simply because of how quickly they were put out and therefore how little damage was created. All of
