Today is Juneteenth! Please take time today to educate yourselves on what this holiday means for those who were affected by slavery. It's a hot day, so cool down and watch a film or documentary on slavery. Anti-Blackness is alive and well today, because white supremacy culture continues to infiltrate the minds of young children today with its narrative.

Anticipating the city-wide celebrations of Juneteenth, “Speaking to Our Ancestors” – featuring artists of African descent -- opens at the NRCA Rotunda Gallery next week, on Tuesday, May 21st. An Opening Reception will take place Tuesday evening, from 5 to 7 pm.

Curated by NRCA’s Gallery Chair Lynn Honeysett and Valen Daughtrey, this exhibition explores African heritage through contemporary art, bridging eras and resonating with the voices of the past. The featured artists -- including Val Daughtrey, Barry Mason, Even Bishop, CJ Priester, Alvin Clayton, MarkAnthony Love, Shanequa Benitez and Traci Johnson -- draw upon cultural, spiritual, and historical influences, addressing themes of memory, resilience, music, love, goodness, and transformation: How do ancestral lives inform the present? How do artists of African descent carry historic burdens, mysteries, and traditions into their art and lives? Art allows these diverse artists to converse with a silent past, giving their ancestors a voice in the present and future.

Some works include augmented reality components, enhancing educational experiences and engaging the community. By blending traditional artistry with modern innovation, the exhibition honors the past while looking forward, channeling pain into positive action and inspiring hope and reflection.

Lynn Honeysett, the Chair of the NRCA Rotunda Gallery, was trained as an artist at the National Academy of Art in NYC; she was formerly Executive Director of the Pelham Art Center. Valen Daughtrey is an Illustrator, graphic designer, muralist, and teaching artist who works as a Program Advisor at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Daughtry, who recently joined NRCA’s Gallery Committee, says “’Speaking to Our Ancestors’ celebrates the profound narratives of these artists. Their works transcend time, honoring ancestors and paving the way for future generations, teaching us the enduring values of love and goodness.”

The NRCA Rotunda Gallery is located in New Rochelle’s City Hall at 515 North Avenue, and open to the public during regular business hours. “Speaking to Our Ancestors” will be on exhibit until June 26th. For more information about NRCA visit www.newrochellearts.org.

How are we moving past the stereotypes forced on us and when are we going to move in unison to fight these systems of oppression. We are holding space for understanding and healing.

A holiday celebrated mostly in Mexico is a yearly tradition to remember loved ones that have passed on and is essentially a reunion between the living and the dead. Families will create an altar with offerings to their departed family members and are decorated with bright marigold flowers, photos of their loved ones, and their once favorite foods or drinks. It is believed to encourage their loved ones to return and celebrate with them, a rare holiday to celebrate death and life, where mourning is exchanged for joy. 🧡🧡

October is National Bullying Prevention Month and many of us are consuming a lot of content on social media these days to stay informed, to show support, and to learn, or sometimes to just get a laugh. Social media is a tool and it can be a great tool if utilized correctly, but not everyone is here for that. We wanted to dive deeper into cyber bullying as this month wraps up. Everyone using social media is a complex human being with feelings and a story. Please be mindful that not everything everyone posts will be agreed by all. THAT'S OKAY. Freedom of speech protects the opinions of all even if they are not fully informed. Please take care of yourselves and step back from social media if you're feeling overwhelmed by negative emotions. This is a highly emotional time for many. It's okay to step away, breathe, and reset.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month and we would like to create awareness to protect all children from being victims of unwanted harassment. We also want to highlight that students of color are disproportionately bullied and harassed at school, confirmed by lawsuits and the NY AG report. OneM promotes kindness, acceptance, and inclusion for all. ❤️❤️🕊️

Dear Community,
The humanitarian crisis in Israel and Gaza has left so many of us reeling and we understand there is a lot of emotions. OneM is open to having conversations fostering understanding and support with the goal of creating unity, and ultimately healing. If something on our page is triggering, please take a moment to step back before reacting. Please be kind to one another and be respectful of the fact that this has left many of us emotionally bankrupt, therefore using our precious energy to defend ourselves is not helpful.
Important Reminders:
- This is a humanitarian crisis and there are many victims.
- Hateful rhetoric is not helpful to anyone.
- Check your sources and educate yourself.
- it’s okay to not fully understand the complexities of what’s happening, but still want to help all those affected.
- Supporting Palestinians is NOT antisemitic & supporting Israelis is not anti-Palestinian. The governments and extremists involved are not representative of all people.
- It’s okay to feel your feelings about this, but not okay to attack or lash out at others.
Let’s refuse to let anyone be dehumanized.
Peace and Love,
OneM
