“We were working near Port Townsend, Washington harvesting Sea Cucumbers. We were working at a maximum depth of 85ft. Sea Cucumbers are sold mainly to China, dehydrated here before they are shipped over to Asia. A small domestic market in Seattle buys small quantities as well.
“This first photo is me jumping off the boat early in the morning, around 7am. Water temperatures remain very cold in the summer, and I believe this was August. It was probably 50°F and I am wearing shin guards on my legs to protect from sharp rocks and urchin spines. We would harvest 3000lbs a week, which equates to about a day and half of diving. All day in the water… it’s very grueling.” - Doug.
Arctic sailer fights the good fight, raising awareness on the plight of the environment through which she navigates, as well as the experiences of a solo traveller on high northern seas.
Such experiences are beautifully laid out in her recent short film you can find on her YouTube channel. A journaling and a meditation on what it is to travel alone in the 70° north region, and all the heavy weather it promises. Find it through the link in her bio.

“I was imagining Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance crossing these wild waters and surviving for two years in this cold, frozen landscape. It’s absolutely incredible what humans can go through and survive.”
Hope everyone’s having a damn fine weekend 🍻

“There is no better way I can think of to reach the Antarctic peninsula then to step aboard . The roughest, most remote and incredible expedition I have been a part of so far. Reading stories of the earliest Antarctic expeditions, this experience transports you back to those times in many ways. Feeling the power of the Drake Passage smashing into the hull, the ocean spray dripping from the sails and the distant site of Antarctic land after days at sea. Truly unforgettable.” BH

Ewan Lebourdais - Peintre de la Marine captures the Mariquita-voilier in a low slung mist upon the English Channel/La Manche.
Ewan kindly related the moment he took the shot:
“I’ve been lucky enough to experience a rather extraordinary maritime and photographic adventure. Crossing the English Channel in my little boat and chasing after the most beautiful boats in the world is no mean feat.
After a few days’ racing between Falmouth and Dartmouth in the UK, a start was given for the 2023 Richard Mille cup, between Portland and the village of Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
On my 8m inflatable boat, I’m constantly looking for the right angles and distances, while these marvels named Tuiga, Atlantic, Mariquita, Moonbeam III & IV, Lady Anne are looking for the most efficient way to win...
Moonbeam IV made a remarkable start to the race, and at that point I thought Lady Anne was finally left behind. But the English are formidable. In the end, it was Moonbeam III who won this leg, with the finishes taking place at sunrise in front of the Royal Squadron’s cannons. Incredible, magnificent and memorable.
A little before sunset, which was shaping up to be magnificent, we were level with Poole and a few clouds promised a beautiful, warm-toned light.
At that moment, I encountered a light I knew existed, but had only seen in Turner’s oil paintings. Cloudy, warm, permissive, bewitching...
Marquita and Moonbeam IV were close-hauled, the angle was perfect. At a distance of 800m, Mother Nature spoiled me with a swell that came out of nowhere. This providential wave interposed itself between my lens and the yachts.
Without even realising it, beautiful images were being created. I triggered the shutter first on Mariquita, seen here, then on the Atlantic, and about ten minutes later a marvellous pair of Fife shots.”
