Happy Halloween, spooky people! đŸŽƒđŸ§›đŸ»â€â™€ïžđŸŠ‡

We’ve been taking a little autumn break from uploads to take care of some other upcoming projects in the works, but we will be back soon with more laughs, blood, and psychological horror. In the meantime, kick back like it’s the Witches’ Sabbath (Goya’s chill 1798 version, obvs) and go hog wild on day-after-Halloween bargain candy—you deserve it.

After a very brooding last episode, we decided to lighten the mood with a pair of b***y and bloody horror comedies! Watch along with us for poorly managed demonic cults in Satanic Panic (2019) and an unfortunate turn in childcare in The Babysitter (2017). Listen for our commentary on the the incredible powers of toxic masculinity, the creativity of weaponized di**os, and the quality of life you can expect when you’re stabbed in the skull.

Ah, these brilliant, sunny summer days are the perfect time for dark and brooding psychological horror that leaves you absolutely reeling as the credits roll! (It’s not just us, right?) Watch along with us for historical romance and bloodbaths in The Countess (2009) and a god complex on steroids in Saint Maud (2019). Listen for our commentary on the acting careers of cockroaches, the brilliance of female writer/directors, and whether or not you should use human blood in your skincare routine.

We’re rising from the dead with a new episode! Everything sucks so we watched cat movies—as one does. Join us for a Stephen King double feature of Cat’s Eye (1985) and Sleepwalkers (1992). Listen along for our thoughts on global cat mythology and the indefatigable hotness of the Borg Queen—plus our shameless attempts to rewrite Stephen King’s screenplays. Sorry, Stephen.

Happy New Year! If you’re not quite ready to let go of the holiday mood (and yes, Axis is still unabashedly binging terrible Christmas romance movies), catch up on our December episode. It was a vintage, violent holiday season for us as we watched Black Christmas (1974) and Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984). Listen for our commentary on 1970s attempts at a GoPro, the ever-present possibility of demonic possession, and lots of yelling about terrible, awful men. It’s a good time. Grab your hot cocoa and cozy up for a bloodbath!

Also a quick programming note—we’re taking a belated holiday break and will be skipping a January episode. See you in February!

We’ve got a (belated) November episode for you full of tall wigs and low-cut necklines—we’re talking Elvira, of course. We’re watching both of her campy movie masterpieces: Elvira’s Haunted Hills (2001) and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988). These movies are Cassandra Peterson’s love letters to classic movie tropes, and this episode is a lot of us gushing about how great she is (as everyone should). Join us for our meditations on romantic himbos, the comedic genius of a bad dub, and the temperamental nature of dog divas.

Happy Halloweeeeeen! What better way to celebrate horror’s most beloved holiday than with two Halloween anthology films? Buckle up for Tales of Halloween (2015) and Trick r’ Treat (2007). This episode is JAM PACKED with storylines, terrors, and so goddamn many notable horror actors that it’s impossible to list them all. (That didn’t stop us from trying, though.) Listen along to hear us fawn over adorable, murderous extraterrestrials and try to figure out how to get on the invite list for sexy midnight coven gatherings.
Seriously, it’s not too late to invite us.

There’s slicing and dicing aplenty in our August/September episode—we’re watching May (2002) and The Voices (2014)! We’ve got talking heads, talking pets, and the most unsettling doll we’ve seen yet, plus an amount of blood splatter that probably kept local laundromats busy for quite a while. Join us for discussions on the horrors Frankenstein has wrought, why some people have the hots for dead bodies, and Axis’s newfound need to own a prop knife.

Did you catch our June/July episode? It’s a 1985 vampire double feature
Once Bitten is an 80s glam vampire extravaganza showcasing baby Jim Carrey being seduced by a supermodel—what more could you ask for? Fright Night takes a darker turn and delves into the true horrors of being an out of work actor (oh, and Prince Humperdinck is a blood-sucking, apple-eating menace). We’ve got hot takes on vampire harems, q***r coding villains, and exactly what kind of goop a vampire’s minion melts into.

This month we’re diving into just how many horrors can live in one house—or hotel, or cabin
Up first is Ti West’s The Innkeepers (2011)—it’s about spooky ghosts in the basement and the true horrors of customer service jobs. Then to pick up the pace, it’s Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods (2011), where some people REALLY make horror their job. Watch along with us for Moaner’s new foray as a film editor and Axis’s new favorite creature, the Dragonbat.

What's this? Us on ANOTHER PODCAST?

We're happy to share that we guested on Wyrd Transmissions, hosted by friend and horror author Curtis M. Lawson! We had a delightful time talking with Curtis about how we got started and how everything works behind the scenes. Take a listen to get to know us a little better, and stick around and listen to more of Wyrd Transmissions to hear Curtis's interviews with all sorts of artists and authors in the horror world.

In this episode I talk with Moaner and Axis from the Late Night Podcast. We discuss horror films, co

It’s still March, right? Right???

Enjoy our right under the wire March episode featuring My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009) and In the Mouth of Madness (1994). We’ve felt like our grip on reality has been a bit tenuous at best lately, so we decided to fully embrace it with a couple of protagonists who can make our level of sanity look just peachy! Watch along with us for a movie so bloody that Australia wanted it banned from their country and the movie that will make you ask “wait, what accent is Sam Neill doing?”

Fear not, we haven’t abandoned you! We may have been lost in the metaphorical woods for a little while, but we were doing important research for our February episode because it is CRYPTID MONTH! Listen in as Axis fangirls for Mothman in The Mothman Prophecies (2002) and we both fangirl for Robert Carlyle in Ravenous (1999). Watch along with us for foreboding phone calls, moralizing man-eaters, and the cryptid who has won the “Best Butt” award every year since his statue was unveiled in 2003. November technically may have come and gone, but it’s 2020 and time isn’t real! Hang on to Thanksgiving a little longer and come catch up with us in our November episode, where we were inspired to watch some movies that are all about bringing the family together: The Purge (2013) and You’re Next (2011). If you follow us, you PROBABLY like horror movies—and we've got some good news for you! This weekend, you can watch a collection of new short horror films being showcased as part of the Big Apple Film Festival, and even better, Axis is in one of those movies!

Flock, directed and written in part by Axis's friend and all around wonderful artist Ariel Mahler, is a sweet little love story were NOTHING could possibly go wrong (which is obviously why it's part of the "thrillers" block of films). If you want to support creative filmmakers doing exciting things in the world of horror and have a chance to enjoy a film festival from quarantine, this is the way to do it.

You can watch the movies online all weekend, and if you're in the New York/New Jersey area, you can enjoy the movies as a drive-in! Tickets available here: https://www.goelevent.com/BAFF/e/ThrillerShortsBlock

You could say the episode is late, or you could say it’s perfectly timed for Halloween! After spending a year talking about everything spooky, we’re using Halloween to be a little nostalgic. This October we watched Hocus Pocus (1993) and Ghostbusters (1984)! We definitely enjoyed returning to a couple of our respective favorites, including full deep dives into the Hocus Pocus sequel novel, Peter Aykroyd’s A History of Ghosts, and the secret dark history of construction in New York City. Come little children and listen on iTunes, Stitcher, and on our website at https://www.moanaria.com/the-late-night-episodes. (For the record that was a JOKE and despite being family movies, our episodes are still not family friendly.)

This September, we're celebrating what may be the most terrifying back to school season yet with a little more terror! This is an illustration of the original Smalls Lighthouse from 1776, the home of the infamous Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy in 1801. The harrowing tale of the death Thomas Griffith and the survival of Thomas Howell was one of the many points of inspiration that Robert Eggers used when imagining the script for The Lighthouse with his brother, Max Eggers.

When the Queen of the Lair undergoes her full transformation in She Creature, she is revealed in this full body suit masterfully sculpted by John Chereveka and Hiroshi Katagiri, with a crown-like monstrous head sculpted by Shane Mahan. The suit was carefully thought out, with finger extensions for the hands and barbs along the caudal fin designed to be used as a weapon. Between the weight of the suit and the angle of the body, it took immense back and core strength from actress Hannah Sim to control the top of the suit, while the lengthy tail was controlled with a puppet rig.

There was much more to Rya Kihlstedt’s costume in She Creature than just the mermaid tail. She also wore prosthetic webbing like gloves on her hands, and the team went through a variety of wigs before settling on one that was designed to flow and catch the light like seaweed.

This episode was definitely worth the wait! Our July episode brings watchalongs of the slightly surreal Hammer Horror and Shaw Brothers collaboration The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires (1974) and the extremely surreal Toho masterpiece that is Hausu (1977). Get ready to cheerfully embrace the bizarre and enjoy one of Axis's new favorite movies along with us (hint: it's the one with the cat).
