ARE YOU UP FOR KILLARNEY’S STREET-CAR CHALLENGE?

Saturday 30 July sees Killarney’s first ever Street-Car Challenge as part of Round 6 of the Power Series presented by Wingfield Motors.

This is your opportunity to get a taste of Power Series racing – in the car you drive to work each day!

The Street-Car Challenge is aimed at attracting new drivers to racing at Killarney, especially enthusiasts who have taken part in Track Days or our time-attack Speed Festival earlier this year, but who don’t yet have a purpose-built and dedicated racing car.

Which is why it is open only to roadworthy cars running on street-legal tyres; purpose-built racing cars are not eligible. A roll cage is allowed, provided it conforms to the safety regulations as outlined by Motorsport South Africa (MSA). Similarly, if the driver’s seat of your car has a racing harness, it must also conform to MSA safety regulations.

You don’t need racing overalls; you just have to wear long sleeves and long trousers (preferably denim) and closed shoes, and provide your own crash helmet. You will, however, need an MSA One-Event or Social competition licence; these are obtainable online from https://www.msaonline.co.za/login/

AND THIS IS HOW IT WORKS:

The races will be run on a handicap basis, based on your best lap time in Qualifying. All the competitors line up on pit lane, slowest in front and fastest at the back, and are flagged off at intervals calculated so that you should all finish at the same time, making for a very exciting last lap!

The entry fee is R350 including VAT and transponder hire; for that you also get two practice sessions on Friday 29 July and a qualifying session on the morning of Saturday 30 July, as well as two six-lap handicap races as part of Round 6 of the Power Series presented by Wingfield Motors on Saturday 30 July.

The Street-Car Challenge competitors will be allocated an area in the paddock along with the Power Series racers – and yes, your name will be in the programme; make sure you get a copy. Trophies will be awarded to the top three.
However, entry is restricted to 12 cars, on a first come, first served basis. Entries close at noon on Monday 25 July, so contact race secretary Terri Philander at [email protected] or Paul Simon at [email protected], or see Terri or Paul at the Street Car Track Day on Saturday 23 July, to obtain an entry form.

HERE'S THE ENTRY LIST for the SA Endurance Series 9 Hour at Killarney on Saturday 5 December, including the 14 entries that will be racing for the first hour only.

The list includes some famous names in endurance racing from around the world, such as Jeroen Bleekemolen and former F1 driver Jan Lammers from the Netherlands, British Touring Car and Le Mans veteran Anthony Reid from Scotland, as well as local legends Sarel van der Merwe (who celebrates his 74th birthday on Saturday), rally ace Geoff Mortimer (still building and racing hot cars at 84 years young!) and the president of the Western Province Motor Club, international geopolitical consultant Dr Greg Mills.
