Dare I sound so cliche, but….THIS IS 51!!! Another revolution around EL SOL. Another blessing to continue on “This Thing Called Life.” 💜💜💜 Is this the face of a cat that just passed the half-a-century milestone?!? The outpouring of LOVE thus far today & all-day yesterday on TWITCH spoke volumes; Loud & Crystal Clear. Tear inducing is a vast understatement. Was someone cutting onions?!? 😢 Appreciate all my DJ brethren & sistren that rocked to aid in ushering in this new earth day for me. Even through the many loops & hurdles, y’all were there for me. Hold up?!? Jimmy is turning 51 next week?!? Mercy!!!! (Ego Trip) Fiddy what?!? I don’t feel a day over 37! 🤣🤣🤣 Another year of celebrating (yet another) revolution around el sol one day before (Next Wednesday-5/15 9am-9pm EST) my actual birth date of 5/16/73. It’s going to be a Lovely Day, indeed. 12-Hours of top-notch selections live on TWITCH from myself + a gang of my friends. Reminds me: I better start asking said friends to rock. 🤣🤣🤣 Better late?!? It’s great to see old friends, albeit this meeting was not under the best circumstances. This afternoon I was honored with handling the music for Pittsburgh’s very own legendary Mel-Man’s pops Lucky’s repast. Those in the TWITCH world may know him as Cuppy Johnson. But around these parts he is simply royalty. Any (post-Chronic) Dr. Dre beats w/ hard snares that’s Mel, Budda, or Sneed on the beats. The holy Pittsburgh trinity. This is sadly the second time I’ve gotten to catch-up w/ Mel in the span of the last year, as I played the repast for Budda’s parents back in July & Mel made the journey out to support his friend. Prior to that it had been 20+ years since we’ve linked up. Far too long. Far too amazing & humble cat. Today was a beautiful gathering of the three Fs. Friends, Family, and Food. Unexpected ATL digging score of the week. I’ve never stumbled upon Doug Carn’s pre-Black Jazz 1969 debut long player on Savoy in the wild, but lo & behold there it is . Super salute to brother Daryl for bringing the goodness to L5 for as long as I can remember (& downtown soon come). Lots of new heat in the third space at Moods. Even after RSD came and went. 🔥🔥🔥

These two dudes are responsible for the vast majority of my personal (at the crib) playlist over the span of the last decade plus. Always incredible output & last night they took their joint works (plus respective solo material) to the live stage in our fair city. Amazing night w/ a stellar lineup of musicians. The aforementioned + , on lush vocals on bass & our very own on the sticks. Waking up at the break of dawn this past Tuesday morning to make the 30-minute trek out to South Fayette High School was well worth it. Aided my brother-brother w/ his excellent keynote present (using Hip-Hop as a metaphor for life) to set off the 4th Annual ‘Uncommon Conference.’ even pulled out at an old verse of mine from the nineties when I signed to his label Fat Crayon Records, to properly introduce me. Fun fact: I used to rhyme:) Speaking of emceeing…we have the students (& faculty) engage in an impromptu MC battle. & we (also) bring up two students to battle on the decks & coin them official “DJ monikers” in the process. A full-on b-boy/girl battle takes place, too. The fourth element (Graffiti) is represented by the collective “tagging” the event on social media. Super rewarding to & be part of a such an enriching program.

Part One of “Selecta Goes Record Shopping” found me on my normal weekly record hurt in my fair city of 51 years, Pittsburgh, PA. Part Dos (of two mini-parts) has me at it again w/ my brother @moeknowsbest behind the camera, as he captures me digging in those darn crates…yet again This time in my second home of Atlanta, GA @djsilverknight’s newly opened rekkid establishment @vinylfiendsatl. A curated shop within the confines of Ponce. Listen to him trying to convince me to cop this Black Box LP. 🤣 I would have if I could name another tune aside from “Everybody, Everybody.” 🤣We chop it up with him a bit about the shop before heading to break bread w/ @djterryhunter, @itsjenoneill & @steveeblast. The convo around that table as we noshed (had to throw that in) was comical to say the least. 🤣🤣🤣 Then off to a few more spots in nearby L5, which will featured in episode 2.5 (soon come). How surreal is it to be rocking the @djnickbike re-fix of “Award Tour” earlier in the set & then in walks @jarobiwhite (A Tribe Called Quest), his presence unannounced to you, to dap you up & let they’ve been outside for the last minutes & that “you’ve been killing it’ fam.” Pittsburgh…Philly? it’s all PA Iove! Speaking of…nothing but love to the entire @danteshifi staff. I spoke to my friends at @serato during the @djxshowofficial in Atlantic City & broke down my top Three DJ inspirations. Of cause numero uno is our very own Pittsburgh legend Sly Jock. ♥️ I’ve told Ki Ki (his daughter) this ad nauseam:) He would make me late for class at Reizenstein the next morning, but it was all worth it. Aided in fostering my love of all things selecting & my love for radio. Radio is what parlayed my DJ career as you know it presently. I interned at WAMO & then on WRCT, WPTS, & WYEP over the span of the last 35 years. & of course Jeff & Cash (respectively) go w/out saying. My PA cross-state musical brethren were early influences in what would turn out to be my life’s work. Who woulda thunk that deejaying would ultimately morph into my full-time career. “Don’t forget New Jersey.” This group of women came together (virtually) online during the pandemic, bonded by their mutual love of line dancing. Fast forward three years later & they are all meeting in the funky fresh flesh for the first time this week. Hailing from Gary (Indiana), Miami, Philly, Chicago, and as the young lady in the middle so adamantly stated, somewhere in NJ:) When I asked if anyone was celebrating a birthday yesterday they all pointed to her 86th revolution around the sun the day profit. Such an indelible moment last night at the @augustwilsonculturalcenter for their monthly ‘Intermission’ Happy-Hour series. They then proceeded to get loose to everything i through at them. James Brown, P-Funk, Zapp, The Elements, et.al. An impromptu Soul Train line was started to Freddie Jackson’s “Jam Tonight.” Certainly a first w/ that one setting it off. Each and every one of them hugged me upon exiting at the end. Went on & on about how I made their entire trip! The 1988 Westinghouse High School Band & their rendition of Freddie Hubbard’s “Red Clay” w/ Craig Sheppard on Drums. Greg Humphries on Drums. Calvin Stemley-Conductor. All teenagers doing the darn thing on their respective instruments. EARLY!!! Perfect tune to unleash as we are on the precipice of the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival next weekend. This record is not on the internet(s) (nor for sale on Discogs) in any form, so I had to put this masterpiece out there for the masses. Thank you my brothers Jay Malls for exposing me to this rekkid & Phillip Thompson for lacing me with a copy. Good looks!
