I have survived Hurricane Helene. It has been a rocky 72-hour shift, but I made it out with a foster dog.
Everyone, say hello to Autumn!
Over the last 24 hours (yes, a whole day), we responded to one cat that was shot with a blow dart arrow, and I responded to, and investigated, two incidents of dogs behind shot. Autumn was one of the two (the first was fine and safe with its owner) who had got shot. Of course, we have zero leads on who shot her, but she was shot in the face and there are still fragments lodged near her jaw. Her owner had not kept her on a leash, and she had wandered off for him to find out that she was injured. He released her into our custody, and we promptly started her treatment. This did involve me transporting her over 150 miles throughout the course of Helene, making landfall in Florida. I pushed through severe wind that nearly dragged my ass across the parking lot to ensure that she had a safe location to ride out the storm. Tonight, she's with me. Tomorrow, she is being transferred to a local rescue to continue treatment and find a perfect pathway for her to find a furever home that will continue to keep her safe.
