Legendary artist Tim Sale has passed away at the age of 66.
An Eisner Award winner, Tim Sale not only provided the art for the television series “Heroes”, but has illustrated several comic book publications with long time collaborator Jeph Loeb, including Marvel’s “color” series, ‘Daredevil: Yellow’, ‘Spider-Man: Blue’, ‘Hulk: Gray’ and ‘Captain America; White’, and other books from ‘Wolverine’ to ‘Gambit: Victims’. For DC Comics, Sale and Loeb created ‘Superman For All Seasons’, a retelling of Superman’s origin, and ‘Superman Confidential’ with the late Darwyn Cooke.
Tim Sale’s distinctive and captivating art style helped define the Batman and his mythology for decades, in particular during the 1990s. Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale created classics such as the 1996 Legends of the Dark Knight Halloween special ‘Batman: Haunted Knight’, 1996-1997’s ‘Batman: The Long Halloween’, 1999-2000’s ‘Batman: Dark Victory’ and 2004’s ‘Catwoman: When in Rome’. From the retelling of Harvey Dent’s tragic transformation to the villain Two-Face to exploring the life and family of Selina Kyle’s Catwoman for the modern era, Loeb and Sale’s collaborative work has greatly influenced Batman media, including Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Trilogy’ (2005-2012) and Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ (2022).
Tim Sale’s influence on the comics and creative world is truly undeniable. As we mourn losing such an iconic talent, we thank Mr. Sale for his incredible contributions to the Batman universe and modern American comics. My sincerest condolences to Tim Sale’s family, colleagues, and fans. May he rest In peace wherever his kind soul resides in the multiverse. 🦇🕊
