1 year ago I opened an Instagram account (gasp!). I went all in with 234 posts since then. I tried the thing where you tether a post to your FB account and just found....it didn't really seem like anyone was seeing it when I did that. So, I stopped posting on Facebook. All this to say:

This Friday I'm releasing a brand new song. It was inspired by the writing and characters that Heather Zacharias created for a short film that's currently in the editing process.

Many thanks to everyone who's taken the time over the years to connect with me through these songs: to listen, speak a kind word or share. It means the a great deal to me and makes the joy of creating so much more rich.

One year ago (tomorrow) our dear friend Lindsey Sine passed from this earth. This song came to me very soon thereafter. It’s my attempt to express some fragment of the grief that exists when someone leaves us. I dedicate this to Karl, their kids and every member of their family and all of Lindsey’s friends that feel her absence.

All funds raised from this release will be donated to The Meira Memorial Fund, for the creation of a Memorial Garden @ the Shifra Centre For Wellness in Cochrane, where Lindsey poured so much of her love.

Had a lovely time tracking cello and vocals yesterday with these good people Von Bieker TAYLR and Clea Anais.

Yesterday was pretty freakin’ special. I got to make music with some of my favourites at the cozy, welcoming and wonderful studio. We worked on a song that still breaks my heart a little - all the more so now that it’s a duet with taken over the top by cello work. It’ll be a while before you all hear this but you’re gonna love it.

Brand new single from Joy Robinson Music! There's so much that I love about this track: Joy's amazing vocals, 80's synth sounds, a recording of her Dad talking talking excitedly about his engagement (from a couple of decades ago +) that we put into the song and Aaron Krogman's bgvs, to name a few!

Last year I got to record Chris Forrest & The Big Mercy's sophomore album and this track was a massive highlight for me.

Getting to dive into this kind of bluessy world and blending it with a folk sound was an absolute blast. Also, we had a real dream team of collaborators contributing to the track: Bob Hamilton (dobro), Andrew Legg (harp) and Justine Vandergrift (bgvs).

So, throw on a pair of shades, crank it up and put your foot to the floor.

First thing, I have some pretty amazing friends and I consider myself lucky.

This song was written around the time when life was starting to transition away from spending almost every waking moment in our homes and away from other people. I felt pretty alone in terms of friendship through a big life transition. Some of it my fault, some of it circumstantial, some of it something else that I’m still not sure I understand.

This isn’t about any one particular friendship but rather my processing of this cascade of emotions at a time when it felt like it was all I could do to keep them from sucking all the air out of the room. It’s me trying to see where the feelings and thoughts and prayers might lead to when I can breathe again. Which I can now, thankfully.

I still have a lot to learn about friendship. And I think that there’s this little part of me that’s getting bigger and louder and hoping I’m not the only one that feels that way.

As I release this achy, jaunty love letter to friendship into the world, I send it with a heart full of gratitude for it all: the somewhat inevitable missteps and the magic of caring for and journey with each other.
