STATEMENT ON HEALTH
June 8, 2021

Maayong buntag kanatong tanan.

Last January, I was rushed to the hospital for an ear infection. But that was not all.

While I was at the hospital, and after thorough tests, I was told that I had sepsis or blood infection. I almost died.

I was strongly advised back then to take a couple of months off work in order to rest and fully recuperate.

Apan dili nako maako nga magpahuway samtang dako kaayong hagit ang giatubang sa atong syudad. To recall, last January, we experienced a second surge of COVID cases in the City. Daghan kinahanglan atimanon niadtong panahona, maong I decided to continue to work. My health momentarily took a back seat.

Considering nga manageable na ang atong COVID cases sa syudad karon, ug nagpadayon ang atong pagpabakuna sa atong mga constituents, I am finally heeding the advice of my doctors.

I would like to announce that I will be taking a leave of absence for three weeks starting tomorrow, June 9, 2021.

I will take this opportunity to pay greater attention to my recovery. During the next three weeks, I will be undergoing a medical workup to make sure there are no more infections sa akong lawas. Through this, I will just be in the City of Cebu.

I will be issuing a memo today designating Vice Mayor Michael Lopez Rama as the acting mayor of Cebu City for the next three weeks.

Dako akong pagsalig kang Vice Mayor Rama that he will be able to perform the functions as Acting Mayor within the bounds allowed by law. Meanwhile, I am also entrusting City Administrator Atty. Floro Casas, Jr. to keep all operations running in City Hall. Even as I focus on my recovery, I will continue to monitor the City.

It is on the spirit of transparency and accountability that I am making public the state of my health. I have come to realize that it is important for me to focus on my recovery so I can also take care of the people of the City of Cebu.

I am not getting any younger. Mapasalamaton ko sa Ginoo nga I got a new lease on life and I promise you that I will come back better and stronger.

Sa akong mga kaigsuonan, I am asking for your prayers for my full recovery. I know that I can get through this with all of your support.

PAGASA has issued a weather advisory #1 at 11AM of December 17, 2020. A low pressure area was located 470KM East of Davao City. It is less likely chance of developing into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours.

We urge the public to prepare for the effects of the weather disturbance as it will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains which may cause potential flooding, landslides in hazardous areas.

We urge all Barangay Disaster Response Teams to be on stand by alert for any untoward incidents. Conduct hazard assessment in your area and if needed cut branches that may cause an incident, clear garbage from the canals and active preemptive evacuation ahead in your hazardous sitios.

Memo to critics who keep on bashing public officials

If you have nothing positive to say, and you cannot even help yourself, better shut your mouth and find solutions to feed your family, save them from infection and hunger and follow all the protocols. Do not add more problems, be part of the solution. This isn’t the time to hurt our frontline commanders. We are engaged in battle and the political leaders aren’t our enemies.
To those who keep criticizing the government and insulting President Rodrigo Duterte, Governor Gwen Garcia, Mayor Edgar Labella, and other officials, please look into your hearts and conscience and ask yourselves: Do you really realize how much sacrifices are our public officials doing for you, to alleviate your conditions and help you and your families? They haven’t been sleeping regularly. They have been exposing themselves to infections, and they are cracking their heads how to make every one safe and fed. Of course, you'd say that these are their duties. No, they are doing much beyond the call of duty. While you, there, are just sitting, waiting for “ayuda” and speaking with a sense of entitlement and irresponsibility.
It’s too convenient for you to malign, and throw mud at the president, governor, mayor, and barangay captain. They are trying to do everything to help everyone. But the resources aren’t enough because many of you aren’t paying taxes. It is the poor middle class that are over-burdened even when they are overworked and underpaid. What have you done to help? You only have your family to think about. The barangay chairman has hundreds of families to serve. The mayor has thousands and the governor has millions of constituents. The president is minding the welfare of 110 million Filipinos. And they never complain. They never stop doing what they think is best for you. Angay kang maulaw.
