This was truly heart breaking for me and it took everything in me not to breakdown as she narrated her ordeal amidst her tears.
She not only lost her adult son, she also lost the bread winner in her home.

We are seeking redress for her and we know it will be a long and arduous process.
She is currently in therapy twice a week and as soon as the therapist gives us the green light she will be trained in a skill and money management and then empowered to commence her trade #torture
was invited to the National Assembly by the House of Representatives committee on reformatory institutions to participate in the investigative hearing on Decongestion of correctional facilities.
This hydra headed menace has far reaching implications and need to be addressed with a sense of urgency.
I submitted a full report and made a brief presentation on ways of not just decongesting the correctional facilities, but keeping them decongested.

Education is a fundamental human right and every child should have access to it.
We can’t eradicate poverty just by using hashtags or slogans like “A world without poverty is possible” and “Put an end to poverty”. Nothing wrong with them but we need to do much more than that.
Education is one of the ways of breaking the vicious poverty cycle.

Today we represented 2 people on remand at the Nigerian correctional centre Keffi and got them discharged.
Good news you’d say ? Mixed feelings for me.
A look at the legs of these former inmates speaks volumes about the conditions of some of our correctional facilities and the environment some of our inmates are held in.
I was at Keffi correctional facility a few weeks ago and 95% of the inmates we interviewed had this same skin condition; there is clearly an outbreak of some sort.
How can anyone be rehabilitated in this sort of environment?
The Mandela Rules, an international treaty ratified by Nigeria, speaks expressly on conditions of incarceration with regard to accommodation, personal hygiene,clothing & bedding and health care services for inmates.
What will it take to reform our correctional services?
The end result of a stay in any prison should be rehabilitation, restoration and reintegration into society but this will never happen under these conditions.
I know our current Minister of Interior has made some major strides in his short stay but this is an emergency.

Torture is one of most serious crimes that can be committed against a human being; it aims to dehumanise through calculated acts of cruelty, removes the dignity of the victims and generally leaves them powerless.
Torture is not just a physical act, it can be mental. In fact it is not only perpetuated through an act, it can also be perpetuated through an omission.
