I was paid a courtesy visit by the Non custodial command FCT, led by the Deputy controller of corrections (DCC) in charge of non custodial, Mrs Esther Onuabuchi Benson.

Non custodial measures, I believe, is key to decongesting the correctional facilities and the Nigerian correctional service act 2019 advocates the use of non custodial measures to take care of minor offenders.
The different measures are community service, parole, restorative justice and probation.

We actually have good laws in Nigeria but we need to push for enforcement of such laws.

Funding is a major draw back in the implementation of these non custodial measures especially community service and we have committed to partnering with them to ensure that people that have no business in correctional facilities don’t end up there and that ultimately, we strive towards decongesting our correctional facilities.

I am passionate about reducing the number of inmates in correctional facilities in Nigeria awaiting trial and a lot of the things I believe need to be done have to be legislated on and so my team and I paid a courtesy visit to Hon Onofiok Luke, who is the chairman house committee on Judiciary. He gave his firm commitment to partnering with us and also came up with more ideas on what we can do. A nation with 70% of people in correctional facilities awaiting trial is a nation that has a lot of work to do on its judicial system, work that needs to start now

So while I was in Larnaca in Cyprus, I visited a library and asked if they had any Nigerian authors and was told that they didn’t know who was from what country but had African authors so I specifically asked if they had any books by and they searched and found this-Purple hibiscus. I can’t even begin to tell you how much of a proud moment it was for me as a Nigerian and as a woman. I love the fact that has taken her place on the world stage and I especially love the fact that she has given permission to young girls (and assurance to their parents) to aspire to be writers as opposed to just Doctors, Lawyers and all the other “professional” degrees. The best part was when the lady attending to me turned to her colleague and said something in Greek (literally) and I heard 2 words: African and Nigerian before her colleague started punching away on the computer and I want to believe she moved her from an African author to a Nigerian one 🇳🇬

Men (married 😜) please jump in here. TBH, this sort of conversation will normally make me cringe and I’m sure I was squirming but these sort of conversations will save MANY marriages. It’s probably not the sort of conversation you have when in polite company but the struggles are real. Question is why harm your organs when there are safe and healthy options ? Have you ever heard someone say something that sounds really intelligent like “If you exercise regularly, you can eat whatever you want as you will burn it all up” only to find out they had it all wrong ? I think it’s safe to say we’ve all been victims of myths and we have no other than himself to challenge some of these myths. I’d say get your popcorn ready but you’ll choke on them listening to him 🤣🤣

I hope this blesses someone. Correction- I said that He doesn’t take away the problem but what I should have said is that He doesn’t always do that. Sometimes He does and at others He gives us the grace to go through it. Song is Ibu Chim by ❤️
