FAITH-A TOOL TO WALK WITH GOD

MEMORISE

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).

READ:
Hebrews 11:1-8

[1]. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

[2]. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.

[3]. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

[4]. By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.

[5]. By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

[6]. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

[7]. By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith

[8]. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.

EXPOSITION

*Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,* so says Hebrews 11:1. Let us take that as a master definition of the concept. Simply put, in the Microsoft Encarta, it is "belief in and devotion to God. Verse 2 of Hebrews 11 implies the indispensability: *For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.* Here we are talking of the working faith that makes things happen positively in the Lord

Read the testimony of a man of God: "There was a day, I was so much stressed up and had completely lost hope on a hospitalised fellow. Though, we had been praying for him for quick recovery, it was as if we didn't believe that he would come up again, because of the precariousness of his condition. One night, the person with him called me, I didn't pick the call, because honestly, it was like Satan was ministering to me, If you want to have happy night rest, don't pick the call. I didn't pick the call, thinking that he wanted to tell me an unpalatable news about the sick brother. Fear gripped me throughout the night that I could hardly sleep. In the morning, I chose to return the call, only to discover that the fellow had an information entirely different from anything about the sick brother. In fact, the person was alive, and he was later discharged, hale and hearty. Isn't that serious? He almost killed himself for nothing sake. That is an effect of fear, the opposite of faith.

Therefore, let us be bold, jettisoning fear, lest the devil cheats us (2 Tim. 1:7). Stop behaving like those brethren praying for Peter's release, but didn't really believe it could happen (Acts 12:5ff)! Have strong faith in God; it works wonders! By it alone, we can walk effectively with, and work for God (Heb. 11:6).

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:
CAC GHB 625

1. In some way or other the
Lord will provide
It may not be my way, it may not be thy way
And yet, in His own way, the
Lord will provide.
Then we'll trust in the Lord, and
He will provide;
Yes, we'll trust in the Lord, and
He will provide.

2. At some time or other, the Lord will provide,
It may not be my time,
It may not be thy time,
And yet, in His own time, the Lord will provide.

3. Despond then no longer,
The Lord will provide
And this be the token, no word He hath spoken
Was ever yet broken,
the Lord will provide.

4. March on then right boldly, the sea shall divide,
The pathway made glorious,
With shoutings victorious
We'll join in the chorus,
the Lord will provide.

Amen.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, let my faith be strongly anchored on You alone, in Jesus name.

2. I rebuke and command to leave me, you spirit of fear in my walk with Christ, in the name of Jesus."

3. Lord, give Your Church the faith, boldness, patience and love to victoriously confront every force against Your Gospel in the land.

LIGHT UP THE WORLD

MEMORISE

Then God said, "Let there be light", and there was light (Genesis 1:3).

READ:
Matthew 5:14-16

EXPOSITION

To light up something is to bring it into an encounter with the light. A dark room will be illuminated when a lamp or an electric bulb is lit. God is the first Physicist Who lit up the then dark world. Since then, it has become obvious that light is an important part of human life. Those who can appreciate the operation of light are those who know the deeds of darkness. Darkness is not good for anything. It restricts one's movement, hampers growth and causes confusion in human lives. In darkness, nothing good comes out. All the good works of creation we see today came after the earth had been illuminated with light. Our God, the Light and Father of light, does not want His children to be in darkness or influenced by the works of darkness, that is why He commanded light into existence and saw that it was good; He separated the light from darkness, and called the light Day, and the darkness, Night. He also made two great lights the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night (Gen 13-5). What a wonderful God and Father of light we serve!

All said and done, having perfected the work of creation in six days, God has given the responsibility to light up the world to the believers in Christ Jesus, because the world is full of darkness (Isa. 60:1-3). Christians are the light of the world, and a city set on the hill cannot be hidden (Matt. 5:14). According to Matthew 4:16, they have seen and received the great light which is Jesus Christ, and He is living in them. You don't light a lamp and keep it under a bushel. If you claim to have light and you fail to shine it, you are not different from someone that has no light. Therefore, go and fulfil Jesus' command in Matthew 28: 18-20, to go and light up the world with His gospel. Let your light so shine before men! Light up the world.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:
CAC GHB 418

1. Oh, spread the tidings round,
Wherever man is found,
Wherever human hearts
And human woes abound;
Let every Christian tongue
Proclaim the joyful sound
The Comforter has come!

Chorus:
The Comforter has come!
The Comforter has come!
The Holy Ghost from heaven;
The Father's promise given;
Oh spread the tidings round ;
Wherever man is found;
The comforter has come.

2. The mighty Kings of kings
With healing in His wings;
To every captive soul;
A full deliverance brings;
And through the vacant cells;
The song of triumph rings;
The comforter has come!

3. Oh, boundless love divine;
How shall this tongue of mine;
To wandering mortals tell;
The matchless grace divine;
That I may with Him dwell;
And in His image shine;
The comforter has come!

4. Oh, let the echoes fly;
Above the vaulted sky;
And all the saints above;
To all below reply;
In strain of endless love;
The song that ne'er will die;
The comforter has come.

Amen.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, make me a light, just as You are, to give light to as many who have not seen the Light of Life, in Jesus' name.

2. O Lord, let the light of the gospel flourish all over the world, in Jesus' name.

3. Holy Spirit, destroy every power working against the propagation of the gospel's light in this land.

THE WORSHIP OF MAMMON

MEMORISE

No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (Luke 16:13).

READ:
Luke 16:1, 2

[1]. He also said to His disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was wasting his goods.

[2]. So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’

EXPOSITION

Microsoft Encarta dictionary defines "mammon" as "wealth and riches considered as an evil and corrupt influence." In furtherance, it is "in the Bible, the personification of wealth portrayed as a false god." In its original Bible context, it is 'greed and hunger for gold or money, and the worship of wealth.' QToday, the media world engages people with daily barrage of adverts that tempt us to spend, trade and buy more than we can afford, thus seducing humanity to serve mammon. Consumerism has become a way of life for the modern man. However, Jesus says, *No servant can serve two masters... You cannot serve God and mammon* (the false god of riches and avarice).

Dr. Ron Jones wrote, "As dangerous as consumerism is, to our spiritual and marital health, the government encourages people to chase after what Morley calls the beautiful, wrinkle-free life, upon which every nation's robust economy depends. Interestingly, the government tracks our purchasing habits and tells us that life is good when consumer's spending is up, and bad, when it is down. And to feed the economy, the federal government periodically sends out tax rebates hoping that people will spend that money and stimulate the market. So, make no mistake about it, mammon relentlessly demands worship." While the Scripture doesn't support laziness, we are never encouraged to substitute the worship of God with mammon. True prosperity doesn't consist in shiny cars and jewellery, beautiful houses, exquisite dining, and exotic vacations, but in godliness and contentment, the deepest secret lessons leading to the true worship of God. Don't be deceived worshipping mammon, unawares.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:
CAC GHB 705

1. More love to Thee, O Christ,
More love to Thee
Hear Thou the pray'r I make
On bended knee
This is my earnest plea
More love, O Christ To Thee
More love to Thee!
More love to Thee!

2. Once earthly joy I crave,
Sought peace and rest
Now Thee alone I seek,
Give what is best
This all my pray'r shall be
More love O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee!
More love to Thee!

3. Let sorrow do its work,
Send grief and pain;
Sweet are Thy messengers,
Sweet their refrain,
When they can sing with me
More love, O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee!
More love to Thee.

4. Then shall my latest breath
Whisper Thy praise;
This be my parting cry
My heart shall raise
This still its pray'r shall be
More love, O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee!
More love to Thee!

Amen

PRAYER POINTS

1. In Jesus' name, I receive the spirit of godly contentment.

2. In Jesus' name, I declare my freedom from the games of serving mammon in this corrupt society.

3. Lord, deliver Your Church from the worship of mammon in any form.

LOVE LIKE GOD

MEMORISE

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another (1 John 4:11).

READ:
1 John 4:7-12

[7]. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

[8]. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

[9]. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.

[10]. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

[12]. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

[12]. No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.

EXPOSITION

There is no way you would know the details about an appliance more more than the manufacturer. Love is a Siamese twin with God. There is no way we will talk about true love without O God, and vice versa. Love, though abstract, when approached biblically, is more of an action than being abstract. It is more than a theory or mere principle. Real love is practical and practicable. Love (Grk. agape) is an unconditional affection, i.e. with no ulterior motive. It is love because God is in it. What sort of love do people display when it comes to celebration or occasion? "He gave me #100,000 during my daughter's wedding; I will also give him #100,000 now that it is his turn." That isn't love. Helping a fellow in need should not be because he/she will pay back! (cf. Matt. 6:1-2).

John the Apostle helps us to really analyse what it means to love like God. Under inspiration, he confirmed that God is love, so anyone that is born of Him has love (1 Jn. 4:7). He who lacks love is godless (v. 8). God's love is manifested in sending His only Son into the world to redeem the undeserving man (vv. 9-10). This is the kind of love He expects us to show to one another; no tribalism, no boundary. You must love because God commands it. You don't yet have love like God, if you salute and give to only those who salute and give to you (Matt. 5:45ff). Love like God!

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:
CAC GHB 693

1. "Love him who's thy neighbour"
It is the Lord's command
He made Himself an example
By the way He loved us.

2. "Love him who's thy neighbour"
Whether in peace or war
He taught us to love all our foes,
Repay evil with good.

3. "Love him who's thy neighbour"
The Lord's voice trumpets still
So, all of us ought to prepare
To love all our neighbours.

4. "Love him who's thy neighbour"
And those living next door
Those that are in your neighbourhood
And all your enemies.

5. To love our neighbours as
Jesus Himself loved us
Jesus loved all His enemies
And blessed and prayed for them.

Amen.

PRAYER POINTS

1. I desire sincerely to live like You; help me, O God.

2. Lord, sanctify me completely; inject in me Your DNA of love.

3. Lord, restore in our homes and churches, love as of old

SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON

THEME: UNDERSTANDING OUR APOSTOLIC FOUNDATION

JULY - DECEMBER 2023

UNIT ONE: THE TRIUNE GOD COMES TO REDEEM US

27TH AUGUST 2023

LESSON 7

TOPIC: BELIEVERS' JUSTIFICATION THROUGH CHRIST'S FINISHED WORK

MEMORY SCRIPTURE
But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference (Romans 3:21-22).

Christ's finished work declares us righteous in Him Gustification). We are free in Him alone!

Understanding Our Apostolic Foundation

1. BRIEF COMMENT:

Taith in the finished work of Christ Jesus restores the broken relationship with

God. Having received forgiveness of sin, we discover an unprecedented new world of blessings which was preordained before the foundation of the world. Under the Old Testament Law, righteousness came by man behaving, but under the Gospel, righteousness comes by believing. God presented Christ as the Sacrifice of atonement through the shedding of His blood, to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate His righteousness so as to be just and to justify those who have faith in Christ. Apostle Paul thus explained that Jesus Christ is both the subject and object of the saving faith (Gal. 2:16). Law's righteousness is a reward for works. Gospel righteousness is a gift through faith. By flesh, no man can prevail or win the battle of sin but by accepting the righteousness which is given by God. It is personal, individual faith in Jesus Christ that saves and justifies the lost sinner. It is this faith in His faithfulness that makes us justified for a new and real identity, regardless of our background or wrongs.

DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READINGS

Tues. 22: Filthy Righteousness (Isa. 64:6)

Wed. 23: Faith Of Moses' Parents In YAHWEH (Exod. 2:2-3)

Fri. 25: Justified: Not By Works (Gal. 2:15-21)

Sat. 26: Justification: Not For The Proud Soul (Hab. 2:4)

$2. DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS:

1. God's gracious plan for the redemption of the depraved humanity is revealed in Christ and received by faith in His finished work. 2. Justification simply implies being declared free from all charges and guilt before God. Thus, we are to live our lives in the consciousness of the justified, yielding our all to the justifier.

$3. BACKGROUND SCRIPTURE: Numbers 25:7-12

4. AIM AND OBJECTIVES:

AIM: To help learners understand that to live is to be justified, and that only comes through faith in the finished work of Christ.

OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

i. identify how Abraham got his righteousness and how one can secure God's righteousness through Christ;

ii. mention how justification is made possible in the sacrificial death of Christ; and

iii. show that salvation is only available on the basis of a single condition-faith.

INTRODUCTION
TEXTUAL SOURCE: ROMANS 3:21-23;4:1-21;5:6-9; 2 CORINTHIANS 5:21 W e thank God for the lesson of last week. We have further understood the import of Christ's resurrection, His ascension into the heavens, His intercession for us at the Father's right hand, and His unstoppable Second Coming. Let us be fully prepared for this Return of His so that we can be rapturable when He comes.

This lesson discusses how faith in the finished work of Christ brings justification to men. It is a discourse of the first part of our 4th tenet, Justification and Sanctification of the Believers through the Finished Work of Christ. We are looking at how Christ's finished Work effects and perfects our justification. The whole human race is in the bo***ge of sin and kept on living in bo***ge. Meanwhile, the Saviour, Jesus Christ, who has no sin, surrendered Himself to take the sin upon Himself and pay for man's redemption through His death and resurrection. Now, man has the blood provision for his freedom from sin and having the long-lost relationship with God restored - Justification. Justification is only possible and accessible by believing Christ's finished work.

INTRODUCTION TO EACH DIVISION:
This lesson is divided into two; I and II. Division 1: ABRAHAM'S JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH, division I reminds us that put under trial, we are automatically guilty (Rom. 3:23), and that to be justified, we have to obtain righteousness by faith in Christ's redemptive work. Division II also buttresses the fact that Jesus Christ came to fulfil the sacrifice of reconciliation, bringing all closer to God and bridging the gap created by the first Adam.

LESSON OUTLINE

I. ABRAHAM'S JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH II. BELIEVERS JUSTIFICATION IN CHRIST

LESSON EXPOSITION

1. ABRAHAM'S JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH (Rom. 4:1-5,9-16) For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness" (v.3).

a) v. 1: Abraham is an OT example of those justified by faith (cf. Gen. 15:6) and the father of Faith because of his special relationship with God. However, did he gain this based on his works or faith?

b) v. 2: God knew that Abraham couldn't secure his own righteousness, otherwise, Abraham would have had something to boast of (cf. Isa. 64:6; Rom. 9:11;11:6; Gal. 2:16; 3:10; Eph.2:8,9; Tit. 3:4ff).

c) v. 3 (cf. Gen. 15:6): To credit one's account can either be as a wage or gift. Abraham got his righteousness as a gift, not wage; faith in God's promises did it.

d) vv. 9-12: Faith was before circumcision. No ritual, rite, morality, keeping of the Law can buy God's justification. We must respond by faith to God's free salvation (cf. Jn. 3:16ff). Abraham did not fulfil the law of Moses (which hadn't been given by then; cf. Exod. 20:1ff) to be declared righteous (vv.13-16).

f) The founding fathers, like the apostles of Christ, had this righteousness-giving faith like Abrahams'. The fathers believed God and lived a life of faith evidenced in the indelible prints of God's manifestation of their time.

II. BELIEVERS JUSTIFICATION IN CHRIST (Rom. 3:23-25; 4:19-21; 5:6-9;2 Cor. 5:21)
..who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification (Rom. 4:25).

a) Rom. 3:23-25: All men, in the first Adam, became unworthy sinners and spiritually powerless. Man's righteousness profits nothing in God's sight, hence the need for divine justification (Isa. 64:6; Rom. 5:21; 1 Cor. 15:21).

b) 2 Cor. 5:21: Jesus took our place to redeem us. What an amazing gift of love! By faith, you become discharged and acquitted (Psa. 32:1-2).

c) Rom. 4:19-21: There will always be situations and tempting invitations from the devil, but Christ, Who has gone through the same has the capacity to deliver/redeem us (Matt. 1:21; Heb. 4:15; 1 Jn.3:8b).

d) 5:6-8: Christ's finished work for man's justification is not by preference but divine providence (Jn. 3:16; 15:13; 19:30). No race, colour, educational background, status, etc., predisposes any man to its attainment. Believing in that finished work alone avails man divine justification.

e) v. 9: Any man who believes in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, and confesses his sins will surely receive God's pardon (CAC GHB 93:2). f) There is nothing we can add to Jesus' finished work on our behalf. Justification is God's gift to us for man cannot be perfect by fulfilling the law, thus man continues to sin. Therefore, let no one think his work contributed to his justification and salvation.

LESSONS DERIVED

1. Nothing should be allowed to hinder us from enjoying the provision of the finished work of Christ.

2. Believing is receiving, with regards to man's justification. Every man who believes, receives.

QUESTIONS

1. Do we still have faith like Abrahams', today?

2. Is faith still the requirement for justification of the believer, today?

SUGGESTED ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS:

ANSWER TO QUESTION 1:
* Yes, Faith like Abraham's still exists today. Personal testimony should be our pursuit. Thus, men should rise up and grow their faith through obedience, just like Abraham, so as to have an experiential knowledge of it.

* Faith is the certainty of something we don't yet have. Faith motivated Abraham to follow God

* Faith moves and promotes God's project even till today.

* God who was from the beginning is yet the same and will forever be. As much as God is still trusted, faith still works

* Mountains of problems are moved, waters of challenges part for testimonies.

* New things are often experienced with individual lives in different places and times, since God has never lacked men in fulfilling His purpose on earth. People are still called today by God for different assignments, like Abraham and others.

* Just as our fathers in faith were called and worked with God, it is an expectation of God from men to walk with Him. Faith is the key!

* However, we still need to do more to measure up to the kind of faith that described the likes of Abraham in the OT. May we find that grace.

ANSWER TO QUESTION 2:

* Refer to division II above

* Yes, faith is still the requirement for the justification of believers today. Without faith, there cannot be justification. For there is no alternative to it. (Heb. 10:38).

• God's design for men has not changed, He still wants us to Himself.

* For without faith no one can see and please God, not to talk of walking with Him (Heb. 11:6).

LIFE APPLICATION:
Justification is a legal act by God, based on the imputation of the righteousness of Christ, by means of our faith granted as a gift from God. There was an instance where somebody was charged to court of law being accused of a crime committed. In the process of court order, he was found guilty and fined. But instead of allowing the law to take its course, the Judge submitted himself to pay the fine placed on him to set him free. What a freedom! That is the picture of Christ ransomed payment that brought us justification.

CONCLUSION:

The freedom from the burden of guilt and shame that would have forever sentenced us to eternal condemnation has been freely given through Jesus' work of redemption. This is what has been established to us in a deeper manner in the lesson today. May we appropriate it and grow therein, in Jesus' name. Amen.

HOPE AND TRUST IN GOD

Read: Psalms 31:20-24
[20]You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence From the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion From the strife of tongues.
[21]Blessed be the Lord, For He has shown me His marvelous kindness in a strong city!
[22]For I said in my haste, “I am cut off from before Your eyes”; Nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications When I cried out to You.
[23]Oh, love the Lord, all you His saints! For the Lord preserves the faithful, And fully repays the proud person.
[24]Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart, All you who hope in the Lord.

MEMORISE: Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who trust in the LoRD (Psalm 31:24).

EXPOSITION
Recent studies show that hope is a critical factor in mental health. An attitude of hope found in hostages makes a difference in survival. Our bedevilled world of uncertainties has seen more people with mental challenges than ever before-the burdened, hopeless and helpless, because of accumulated difficulties of life. Although, you still have these people in the regular public places and are seen as hundred percent sound upstairs, majority would test positive to mental illness, if diagnosed! Today's devotional dosage is proffering solution to this dangerous trend. A hopeful attitude can make a big difference in our entire mental outlook. Hope is a great motivator and source of mental and physical perseverance. Most depression treatments work well in patients convinced that their mood can improve significantly and that they can be helped. Depression and anxiety often afflict the pessimistic and hopeless! Be hopeful, dear devout; your expectation will not be cut short (Prov. 24:14).There is surely an end to all these.

Breaking News has the tendency to break you down if you choose not to break away from them! What is new in the news? Only Jesus Christ is the Good News! Don't panic; never be disheartened, there is still hope for you. Political hope does not transcend the finite, and focuses only on the ephemeral, but hope in God promises what the world cannot offer. We must trust Him in both bad and good times, even when He seems to be "killing" us? Remember that, hope that is seen is not hope. Keep praying, waiting, persevering and trusting Him.

Don't be depressed; help is on your way. Amen.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY: CAC GHB 806
1. Simply trusting every day
Trusting through a stormy way
Even when my faith is small,
Trusting Jesus, that is all.

Chorus:
Trusting as the moment fly,
Trusting as the days go by,
Trusting Him whate'er be fall,
Trusting Jesus, that is all.

2. Brightly doth His spirit shine
Into this poor heart of mine
While He leads I cannot fall
Trusting Jesus, that is all.

3. Singing, if my way be clear;
Praying, if the path be clear;
If in danger, for Him call;
Trusting Jesus, that is all.

4. Trusting Him while life shall last
Trusting Him till earth be past
Till within the jasper wall
Trusting Jesus, that is all.

Amen.

PRAYER POINTS:
1. Lord, help me to keep hoping and trusting in You, even when it seems all hope is lost.
2. Declare: Lord I believe; it is well with me in every ramifications.
3. I trust in you O Lord, strengthen Your Church to devil to shame.
