On February 6, Roma Words, Roma Worlds book group will discuss Salvage, a novel shines a light on the historical issue of the removal of Gypsy-Traveller children in the UK, as well as highlighting a current campaign linked to the issue. Overall, it’s exciting to see a better attempt at depiction than we’ve seen in the past, and it’s reminding us to why Roma need to be more involved in the production of these representations.

We are planning more book events in 2025 and hope to see more listeners and readers around the country! It’s our last episode of season four and we’re talking to Rowena Marin Author about the Romani language on Google translate! Rowena answers listener questions and we get into what it means to have our language on this platform.

Rowena Marin is a Romani woman, author of the memoir Who am I in the World, and Global Agency Lead at Google, in New York. She is the co-founder of The School of Reinvention - a company meant to help people align with their passions and purpose. Rowena comes from a closed community of Silversmith Roma from Romania and managed to succeed in her career through education based in Romania, Spain, France, India, and China. She writes about her story in order to encourage other young women from closed communities to pursue education, grow and define themselves beyond any labels.

🇬🇷 Greece needs to conduct prompt, thorough and impartial investigations into all allegations of racial profiling, racially motivated police violence and excessive use of force by law enforcement officials, according to the UN committee dealing with racism and discrimination. The latest report by UNCERD, expressed concerns about reports of police violence targeting Roma and non-citizens such as migrants, asylum seekers and refugees; and the lack of detailed information on investigations, prosecutions, convictions and sanctions for such acts.

📌 The publication of UNCERD’s Concluding Observations coincides with the ERRC’s latest report Ruthless & Racist: Policing Roma in the Balkans, which found that in Greece,

📄 “Roma and other racialised minorities find themselves at the sharp end of systemic racism in the way they are policed, and brutal, sometimes lethal, police violence is a regular occurrence; the authorities fail to launch prompt and thorough investigations; and police impunity remains, for the most part, intact.”
