The Scallop caught up with Catie Curtis outside the Zeiterion Theatre after her afternoon show on the first day of the New Bedford Folk Festival .

"After making music full time for over two decades, Catie Curtis, who has appeared on the New Bedford Folk Festival stage many times, is retiring from making a living on the road. She plans to stay close to family and friends, become a full time clinical therapist, and only play locally," writes MJ Herrup

"Stand at the end of Union Street on a sunny afternoon, look across toward the pier, and you may catch a familiar rainbow reflection. 'It is made with CDs and DVDs,' said Erin Meade, creator of 'Mirrored Iridescence,' an installation part of this year’s Seaport Art Walk in Downtown New Bedford."

"Since 2018, the Seaport Art Walk has let artists propose outdoor public works of art to be displayed along the city’s working waterfront with themes like 'Lighting the Way: Historic Women of the South Coast' in 2020; 'Whirlwind of Art,' in 2019; and 'Freedom & Equality: the Bicentennial of Frederick Douglass' in 2018.

Seaport Art Walk - Tour with Artists & Curator begins tomorrow (Thursday 7/14) at 5pm! Come join us!

The Seaport Art Walk 2022 Call for Art is LIVE!! You have until MIDNIGHT on April 4TH to get those submissions in.

The Scallop is looking for a Seaport Art Walk 2022 artist to shadow. Let us know if you are interested in letting us follow your artistic journey!

The Seaport Art Walk was founded in 2013 by local artist and small business owner Jessica Bregoli. As a child, Bregoli assisted her mentor, Emily Johns, in caring for the gardens on the waterfront. This early love of gardening and the arts eventually led to the Seaport Art Walk as well as Bregoli’s business, Owl Eye, a landscaping company based in New Bedford. Bregoli grew up and moved onto business ventures in Atlanta, had her son, and finished an art degree at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Bregoli found her way back home to the waterfront with her mentor, Johns.

“[Johns] mentioned to me in passing one day, ‘Don't you think it would be lovely to have some artwork out here?,’” said Bregoli in an email to The Scallop. “And that was the spark that began the formation of the Seaport Art Walk.”

Bregoli credits Eric Lintala, her sculpture professor at UMass Dartmouth, with pushing her to follow through with her idea for the Seaport Art Walk, which is now in its eighth year. The project began by exhibiting student work and now exhibits a mix of students, UMass Dartmouth alumni, art faculty, and even regional and internationally renowned artists. Bregoli said she was sick of people asking her to create work for free; with the assumption that free work looked good on a resume. Bregoli was determined to ensure every artist received payment for their work. With that commitment the Seaport Art Walk became the first large scale outdoor exhibition to offer stipends of up to $2,000!

With only 24-hours notice, Sundance audiences were told there would be an additional entry in the documentary competition category, something so big that the festival had to keep secret. A film so timely it was only delivered to the festival earlier this week under the working title “LP9.”

This film is NAVALNY, and it may be one of the most important and stunning films you ever see.

“C’mon, Daniel, no way. Don’t make a movie in case of my death,” says Alexei Navalny to director Daniel Roher in the first scene of the film. “Make a thriller, not a boring movie of memories.”

Today film writer MJ Herrup takes a close hard look at "Tantura," which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.

"The film’s myopic vision effectively silences Palestinians, creating a structural absence that sutures over Palestinian humanity. It is a violence of dehumanization, not bullets. Two outcomes that, while different, tend to exist in high correlation with one another."

Karen Corbett, a registered nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Nurses Association bargaining team, knows her job very well – and maternity care in particular. Not only has she worked in the maternity ward for over 33 years, she’s had three of her own children there.

The Nurses Association attempted to bring the St. Luke’s nurses into their union over many years, and finally succeeded in winning the support of a majority of nurses through an election in 2018.

05/11/2021

Last summer, The Scallop and Our Sisters' School started a program to teach critical thinking, media analysis and news values to a diverse group of middle school girls. We decided that the best way to tackle this was through a newspaper club, one that engaged with the middle-grade books that the students were already reading.

Twelve girls signed up for the club, and over the past two months they have been pitching, writing and revising book reviews. We recognized early on that, like any newsroom, this classroom contained a diverse set of skills and interests. Students who didn’t write reviews joined our photo team, helped with our publicity and marketing, and even helped copy edit other students' work.

The following is the first batch of book reviews, written by four students at Our Sisters’ School who represent diverse grade levels and backgrounds.

This project is funded in part by the Art is Everywhere grant, financed by the TDI Creative Cities Initiative of MassDevelopment/TDI and the Barr Foundation.
