Lord Nagokita is a truly despicable human being.

Once a vassal of the Ikoma, Nagokita oversaw a remote corner of the Shinomen with Lord Hashimoto of the Shinjo. Having grown outside of the region, Nagokita saw how their limited resources hampered his ambitions; his appeals to the Lion to invest in their secret duty were ignored.

As neither lord seemed to have any luck, getting their attention bred opportunity in his dark heart. He skirmished with the Falcon and Moth, trying to seize their lands; unfortunately, the Imperials and the Crab were attentive and Nagokita was never able to hold his conquests or expand.

When that failed, he slaughtered Hashimoto and all his vassals, feigned his own death and orchestrated to rule their joint domains from the shadows.

His presence was discovered after the destruction of the Moth, as the census of the Imperial families noticed discrepancies.

Lord Nagokita now must die! His crimes against the throne are too many. On his part, Lord Nagokita starts a risky and dark plan -- all he needs is a pet Emerald Magistrates and a good enough lie.

Shinjo Huíhuísū is the silent overlord of Porisuko, liege of the Forest Keep and leader of the Guard's Wrath.

Huíhuísū arrived into Porisuko, and before that year was over, they led the ronin band. Under their leadership, they moved closer to the Shinomen Forest and fortified the Forest Keep destroyed by Lord Nagokita.

After the demise of the Moth, the Unicorn accepted the bandit liege's offer of vassalage.

Huíhuísū may seem disinterested in worldly affairs, letting courtiers and officials think what they assume to think, dispelling none of their illusions. Do not take this attitude as detachment: the Shinjo and Huíhuísū are clearly deeply invested in the region and have plans of their own.

It is just in the demeanour of either to play the same games nobles play.

Shinjo Porisu has been retired ever since Huíhuísū took command, but remains quite busy as their stewards and master sensei.

Porisu lived a life of new beginnings; even in old age he has kept with this pattern, leading to the reclamation and rebuilding of the northern shore of the Cherry Petal Blossom Lake in the name of the Unicorn.

Born in the waves, young Porisu was amazed at the life on the western banks of the River of Gold: a fourth of the Emerald Lands, mostly left to themselves and unnoticed by Imperial concerns, it was imprinted upon him how essential independent merchants were to maintain the fledgling communities. Gathering other trustworthy ronin, he founded the Guard's Wrath band, creating a reliable security force for the region.

His bands success was so great that resulted in the founding of new communities, the largest of which was named after him: Porisuko. After the tragedy that befell the local Unicorn and Lion feuds, the Guard's Wrath stepped up to fill the void -- and met Huíhuísū.

Porisu should be enjoying his retirement, but he really does not know how. And he is too old to learn what it means to be a Shinjo.

Kitsune Anand is a ranger of the Fox clan, which in a different world would live a quiet life, remarkable only by the way which he took the difficulties of survival in extreme environments as personal insult/challenge.

When the Unicorn moved to seize control of the lands West of the River of Gold my adopting a mysterious ronin band, Anand was appointed by the Fox as a mediator, someone to help the new Unicorn into their role as nobles and custodians. They needed someone like him; after all, their domains where in the clutches of the Shinomen Forest.

The Shinomen haunts Anand: it is something ancient and alianated from human perspections; however, there is nothing otherworldly about it - if anything, it seems to belong here more than anything else, scoffing at the human and heavenly assumptions. Just like the ronin-turned-Unicorn liege, it impresses and terrifies him.

Awe-struck, Anand sees this as the ultimate survival test. He takes establishing the fledgling noble lords as his personal challenge, and will see any attempts to hamper these efforts as deadly insults.
