Forget smartwatches and chest straps, it's time to switch to "smart clothing."
Researchers at Rice University in Houston, Texas, US, have found a way to weave "smart clothing" that can monitor your heart. A snug athletic shirt was created with conductive carbon nanotube fibres that is said to be able to measure your heart rate efficiently and accurately. Researchers state that the nanotube fibres sewn into the shirt were successfully able to take a continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) of the wearer. The fibres were turned into sewable threads that in turn functioned as conductive as metal wires.
Lauren Taylor, Rice graduate student and lead author of the study, said in a press release, "The shirt has to be snug against the chest" in order to function properly. “In future studies, we will focus on using denser patches of carbon nanotube threads so there's more surface area to contact the skin,” she said. The paper was published in the American Chemical Society journal Nano Letters on August 30.
Taylor said that the zigzag pattern is adjustable and can be suited to the stretchability of a fabric. Since the data gathered depend on the shirt's contact with skin, researchers are currently working with Dr. Mehdi Razavi and his colleagues at the Texas Heart Institute to maximise the surface area of the clothing to enhance touch with the skin.

A new variant of SARS-CoV-2, C.1.2 has been detected in South Africa and many other countries.
Many countries, including South Africa, have detected a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 – C.1.2.
According to a study conducted by medRxiv, this variant is likely to be more transmissible and might not provide protection even after getting vaccinated.
What is the new C.1.2 variant?
From all the mutations detected so far, the researchers have noted that C.1.2 variant consists of more mutations than other variant of concern or variant of interest.
With a mutation rate of 41.8 mutations per year, the new variant has a mutation rate that is double compared to the present global mutation rate of the other variants.

Instagram will begin requiring users to confirm their birthdays as part of an effort to create new safety features for young people, the Facebook Inc-owned social media app said on Monday.
Instagram has explored building a version of its app for kids under the age of 13, prompting lawmakers to urge Facebook to drop the plans, saying the social media company “has a clear record of failing to protect children on its platforms.
“Instagram said in a blog post it will use the information to “ensure we provide the right experiences to the right age group.” Last month, the company said it would default users under 16 to a private account when they join the platform.
The app said it will ask users for their birthdays when they open Instagram and then show several pop-up notifications if the user does not enter their birthday. At some point, users will be required to submit their birth date to continue using the app, Instagram said.
The changes will only affect Instagram users who have not previously shared their birthday on the app. Instagram added it was aware that some users might enter a
false birth date and said it was developing new technology to address such issues.

An investigation by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) following the arrests of alleged drug peddler Ajay Raju Singh alias Mamu and actor Armaan Kohli has brought to light that Singh had links with the international drug syndicate and prostitution racket, as per a report by mid-day. The report also states that the NCB has recovered WhatsApp chats between Kohli and Singh that point to purchase of drugs. Some chats recovered from Singh's phone reportedly show that he was in touch with people from Colombia and Peru, from where his alleged supply used to come.
The Mumbai Anti Narcotics Cell had arrested Singh in 2009, when his name first surfaced in a drugs case.
