GOODBYE HACHA 🍾 // , the go-to spot for tequila and mezcal lovers in Brixton Village, is sadly closing its doors after nearly four years. Founders Deano Moncrieffe and Emma Murphy shared their gratitude for the support they’ve received from the community but said “circumstances beyond our control” have led to the decision.

Known for their legendary Mirror Margarita and chill vibe, Hacha Brixton will be serving its final drinks on February 15. But it’s not all bad news—Hacha Dalston will stay open, and the team has hinted at some exciting new plans in the works.

Deano, who also runs Equal Measures, a nonprofit promoting diversity in the drinks and hospitality industry, says this isn’t the end—just the start of a new chapter. Stay tuned!

WIN FOR BRIXTON đŸ«¶ // Local brothers and founders of Daniel and Pete faced a legal challenge from US company Brixton LLC, who asked them to stop using the name “Brixton.”

The Californian company describes itself as a “lifestyle brand with deep roots in music and a strong point of view on our place in culture”. Last year the brothers received a revoke legal letter from the company asking them to stop using the name Brixton. At the time, Pete said: “It’s really frustrating - how can you own a geographical place?”

After months of stress and £6,000 in legal fees, they reached an agreement to co-exist under specific guidelines. Their brand, born from a birthday gift idea, remains focused on giving back to the Brixton community. And now, thanks to the help and support from locals and a GoFundMe campaign, they’re now stronger than ever and ready to keep supporting the causes they love. 💙

BRIXTON HONOURS DAME ELIZABETH ANIONWU WITH COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE // A brand-new plaque honouring Professor Dame Elizabeth Anionwu, the UK’s first sickle cell specialist nurse counsellor, is set to be unveiled at the Brixton Blood Donor Centre today.

This tribute recognises her incredible contributions to the NHS and the sickle cell community, celebrating her pioneering efforts in raising awareness and improving care for those affected by the condition.

The newly opened Brixton Blood Donor Centre aims to address the growing demand for blood donations, particularly from the Black community. Sickle cell disease, a genetic disorder that disproportionately affects Black individuals, is the UK’s fastest-growing genetic condition, according to NHS Blood and Transplant.

Dame Elizabeth expressed the importance of blood donors, saying:
“We still rely on the generosity of blood donors from the Black community to make a lifesaving difference.”

The Brixton Blood Donor Centre hopes to welcome over 1,000 donors each week. Whether you’re a first-time donor or a regular, your contribution can make a real difference.

BRIXTON’S BELOVED COMMUNITY HUB NEEDS YOU // Brixton’s favourite spot for families, Papa’s Park, is facing a serious challenge.

The park’s community buildings are in desperate need of repairs, and without immediate support, they could be lost forever. Having been a safe space for over three decades, this volunteer-led gem now needs a helping hand to rebuild its hall and cafĂ©.

This isn’t just a playground; it’s a lifeline for Brixton’s families. In an area where outdoor space is scarce, Papa’s Park offers over 6,000 visitors a year a much-needed escape. With a sports pitch, cafĂ©, and lush green areas, it provides a safe, fun, and educational environment for children to thrive.

BRIXTON NOW & THEN // Brixton, captured around the 1920s. On the left, you can spot the grand Wallace Hughes department store.

Wallace Hughes, born on 31 July 1878, was a prominent figure in Brixton, known for owning the Wallace Hughes department store.

He lived at various addresses, including 13 Woodbourne Ave and 9 Becmead Avenue, with residences in both Brixton and Balham. His department store in Brixton was a significant local business, contributing to the bustling atmosphere of the area during the early 20th century.

The exact year of this photograph is unknown, but it captures the era when Wallace Hughes was a notable presence in the community.

PAPA’S PARK AND CAFÉ NEEDS YOUđŸ«¶ // Brixton, we’ve got a situation on our hands. Papa’s Park, our little green haven in the middle of Lambeth, was recently hit by a break-in.

It’s the kind of news that makes your heart sink, but here’s the thing—this is Brixton, and we don’t let things like this keep us down for long.

If you’ve ever strolled through , you’ll know it’s more than just a park. It’s a home away from home, where kids can play, friends can catch up, and everyone’s welcome with open arms. And at the centre of it all is Papa’s CafĂ©, run by Valcie and Hurley, two absolute legends who’ve turned the space into a warm, welcoming spot for everyone.

But after the break-in, things are looking a bit bleak. The community building was damaged, stock was stolen from the cafĂ©, and items were taken from the groups that use the hall. It’s a massive blow, but we’re not about to sit back and let it slide.
