What are the indigenous people of Sikkim, Lepcha eager to learn about?
The cry of the Lepcha people for their language to be included in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution is a long-time demand now.
A few parties like HSP, and Hamro Sikkim Party, have come out with their clear stand on the demand of the community cry.
Major parties of Sikkim are staying numb and this is where the indigenous community of Sikkim, Lepcha is patiently waiting.
At present, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, SKM & Sikkim Democratic Party, and SDF are the major party, the ruling party being the former and the latter being the principal opposition party.
CAP, Citizens Action Party led by Ganesh Rai is in the fray of a political tussle to become the next major party of Sikkim.
Sikkim unit Bharatiya Janta Party, BJP, has a strong influence and has the most number of legislators after the ruling front in the legislative assembly of Assembly. The ruling front, SKM, and BJP are running the government in coalition.
Also, not to forget the SKM is in alliance with the central BJP government too, the bond with the BJP Sikkim unit is not so good at the moment but in the center, the alliance was recemented in stronger rendition with the participation of the Chief Minister Ren Prem Singh Golay in the recently concluded National Democratic Alliance, NDA, meet chaired by Prime Minister Ren Narendra Modi.
However, all these parties are on the same pitch, maintaining numbness, when coming to the point of inclusion of the Lepcha language in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution.
At this stage, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha has one member of parliament in the lower house, Lok Sabha and Sikkim Democratic Party has one member of parliament in the upper house, Rajya Sabha.
How will the parties going to react to the indigenous community's demand?
This will be something interesting to watch out for in the coming days.
Till then, take care!
Achulay!
