Oh boy oh boy. Iowa legislators will supposedly be amending this bill, HF 3, to take soda and candy off of food stamps instead of turning their SNAP into another WIC program. It doesnât look like any amendments have been made yet, but weâll see. Whether you would agree with this type of amendment or not, keep in mind that the state has to secure a waiver from the federal government in order to do this. Several other states have attempted this in recent years and been denied by the federal government. The Republican Party generally has the viewpoint that assistance programs like SNAP are just undeserved handouts. And of course there are people who take advantage of the help theyâre given, thatâs across the board. But for the people who are truly doing everything they can to stay afloat, especially when they have children to feed, deconstructing these assistance programs without a genuine substitute plan in place would put so many families right back weâre they were before. Not to mention that over the last couple years of shutdowns, lockdowns, and stay at home orders, I guarantee you that without the commerce that the U.S. food stamps program ensures, our economy would be in worse shape than it is now. That and there wouldâve been a lot of âhangryâ people out there. Not exactly on topic here, but the government expanded SNAP during these emergency measures for a reason. For those who only have access to a local Dollar General or 7/11 because they donât have access to a vehicle or they live in a rural area, restricting the SNAP program like this would result in a decent amount of its participants not getting the help they need. WIC is a great supplemental program for mothers of small children. However it is drastically different than food stamps because it exist for a different reason. Replacing food stamps with a similar program that only allows access to specific amounts of whole grains, milk,eggs, baby food, beans, fruits & veggies would be a mistake. We shouldnât discount the benefits that low-income families, specifically children across our country have access to through SNAP. #foodsecurity #iowagop #socioeconomicstatus
