Autism is:
Unable to speak, or maybe speaking too much
Hugging everyone, or disliking touch
Escaping outside,
Or trying to hide
Excitedly flapping
Inappropriate clapping
Autism varies so much

Won't wear a coat, or wears one all year round
Fussy eater, or would eat dirt from the ground
Screaming or humming
Annoyingly drumming
Toys in a line
The same way every time
Autism varies so much

Struggling to learn, or has wonderful gifts
Obsessions of numbers, Cars, films or lifts
Spinning around
Throws things on the ground
Constantly spitting
Aggressively hitting
Autism varies so much

Alone without friends, or controls every game
Always looks different, always dresses the same
Swinging on doors
Head banging on floors
Freaks at the dryer
Keeps climbing higher
Autism varies so much.

Can't answer questions, won't do as they're told
In their own world or bossy and bold
Over prepared
Anxious and scared
A spectrum so wide
But they all bring us pride
When autism touches our lives.

SAL PANELO'S ADVOCACY FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

…They are little angels… sent to us by God to show our humanity to them…

Meltdowns
There may be a couple of underlying reasons for having a meltdown.
It can be triggered by so many different problems.

The key to understanding how to calm an autistic individual lies with understanding what it is that triggers the behavior.

The following are some of the common causes of meltdowns:

• ADHD: Lack of focus or inability to tolerate boredom can contribute to outbursts
• Learning issues: A learning disorder could cause frustration and lead to meltdowns
• Anxiety: This is another major contributor. An individual can get overwhelmed when faced with uncomfortable situations.
• Sensory issues: Sensory issues cause someone to feel overwhelmed which leads to meltdowns.
• Lack of Sleep or Overtired: Being overly tired can lead to feeling overwhelmed which can lead to meltdowns.
• Lack of skills to handle situations: Individuals who lack the skills to cope with certain situations or emotions.

Oral Placement Therapy

Pypa does OPT or Oral Placement Therapy.
She has a small jaw. Her left jaw is stronger than her right. It is one of the reasons why she has speech delay and sensory sensitivity with food. She cannot bite and chew properly like us. To correct and improve her muscles in her mouth, she does OPT.

Her therapist advise us to buy these Talk Tools: Bite Blocks and Chewy Bites. These can only be purchased in the U.S.

Each blocks and bites has a certain texture, softness/hardness, thin/thickness, and hierarchy for the therapy.

Same with Pypa

It is widely understood that a lot of people with autism struggle with certain foods. Sometimes it is the overpowering smell of food on the plate, the smell of the food cooking, the taste, the texture to name a few reasons. For me it can also be the item that the food is in.

For example have some mugs in my cupboard which I can’t drink from, the patterns on them make the drink taste different. My son loves train and he has one mug which is a retro station master mug and I can’t drink from it, I have tried but even my favourite tea or coffee is undrinkable in that mug. It may sound irrational but my brain smells steam trains and the drinks are automatically flavoured with the smell of a bygone era.

Pasta and risotto served in a bowl taste much better than served on a plate. I think some of the reason for this is that it is easier to eat these dishes in a bowl where as I find with pasta it can fly around a plate and this becomes so stressful I would often give up eating that dish. Other foods I would not tolerate in a bowl because they would touch each other and would need to be separate when served on a plate.

Cutlery can also be difficult to process from a sensory perspective. The way a fork or spoon feel in my mouth alters the flavour of the food I am eating. If they are too thick then it can make me gag. The handles of cutlery also effect if I can use them. If they are too thin I don’t get enough proprioceptive input from the but if they are too heavy it can cause hand pain and fatigue.

All of these can make eating and drinking additionally challenging but particularly when eating in restaurants, friends or school. If your child is struggling with food, don’t only look at the food itself.

Studies Show that Being Barefoot Boosts Brain Development in Children!

Going barefoot has multiple benefits such as sensory integration, foot strength, arch development and reduced sensitivity to tactile input. Without shoes, the feet are receiving more feedback therefore increasing proprioceptive input.

When children have the opportunity to explore and play in their feet they have so much more access to sensory experiences that cannot happen when they are wearing shoes!

Balance movement cushion can provide a fantastic tactile experience, but you can also try walking in prickly grass, sand or soft carpet!

You can get the balance movement cushion from www.ot-abc.com
