Welcome to this early April publication of the “Spooky Spotlight” presented to you by S’moror Stories. Today, we have the tale of an interesting malevolent spirit known as “The Flying Dutchman”. The first sighting of this spirit was recorded to be at the Krusty Krab during a Halloween party. According to the witnesses, he said he was offended at the sight of the terrible costumes made by Bikini Bottom residents, especially that of the fry cook of the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob SquarePants. He then threatened to steal the souls of the partygoers but was scared and ran away at the sight of SpongeBob underneath his costume. The Flying Dutchman has also been known to kidnap people and threaten to eat them, unfortunately, the only way out of this is through the perfume department. This spirit often appears as a transparent green apparition and has a pirate suit, a beard, and a bag of souls. It is unclear who this soul may have once belonged to, but he is evidently buried somewhere after having allegedly been on display. The Flying Dutchman is also in charge of Davy Jones’ Locker despite it being owned by none other than the Monkees’ front man, Davy Jones, who once threw socks at the Dutchman.

Welcome, this is the “Spooky Spotlight” and we’re excited to present to you this week’s edition. Today, we’re going to a 400 year-old cemetery in Easton, Connecticut, where many spirits are said to reside including that of soldiers, but it is overshadowed by the legends White Lady and Red Eyes. The White Lady is an unidentified female believed to have died during childbirth. Some people have also theorized it could be the spirit of someone who either murdered her husband or was a victim herself. She is often described as wearing a vibrant white dress with her head covered by a bonnet. Red eyes, the other Union Cemetery “resident”, is named appropriately as the reports circling this entity are its red eyes staring at visitors and sometimes even followed with a “hot breath” on their backs. This spirit is believed to be that of Earle Kellog, a man who was unfortunately set on fire and died across the street in 1935. So, if you’re ever looking for a ghostly thrill, the Union Cemetery may just be ideal, but make sure to be safe and responsible.

This Friday has a March-related “Spooky Spotlight” to show you, and even though it’s been a few days since Saint Patrick's Day, we’d like to present an eerie tale of Irish folklore. This picture here is Red Mary, her real name was Máire Rua but earned the nickname because of sharp red hair and notorious heated temper. She was married to a colonel in the English military but he was killed in combat in Spain, leaving her a widow. She would then marry her cousin who was quite the crook. He did many things for money and it was his involvement with rebels that would get him killed. Now, it is said that she would go on to marry 24 more times after this, but all the men would meet a tragic and untimely demise. There are many “interesting” legends circling how Red Mary may have died, all with no credibility. In the remains of the old castle she lived in, you might just see her and hear her bone-chilling laughs while her many husbands suffer.

Are you feeling adventurous today? Well, it’s time for the “Spooky Spotlight” to fill that hole. Right now, we’re going to examine the weird tale of the Dybbuk (or sometimes spelled Dibbuk) Box. Let it be set that the first Dybbuk box that gained fame was a wine cabinet supposedly haunted by a dybbuk. A dybbuk is an evil spirit from Jewish beliefs, it is thought that dybbuks are souls that have a goal they will stop at nothing to achieve. The Dybbuk box mentioned earlier was auctioned on eBay but was later admitted being a hoax by its owner. The owner, Kevin Mannis, had bought the cabinet at a 2003 yard sale and immediately, he had a vision to create a story behind it. Mannis claimed that the cabinet was once owned by a Holocaust survivor, and they had struggles sleeping and had bad luck attributed to the box. The chain of fictional stories continued as future owners would claim they too experienced its powers. This story has had many additions with claims of other boxes existing with real dybbuks attached to them. Do you believe the other owners or are they too just adding on to the exciting story?

It’s time for the month of March and time for this week’s “Spooky Spotlight”! Today, we look at a popular Carolinas entity with an interesting prediction. The Gray Man, as this entity is called, has been reported for many years, the first sightings coming in the early 1900s. This is not an ordinary appearance either, because most sightings occur just before hurricanes reach land. On the Outer Banks of both North and South Carolina, you might see this “man” whose presence somehow indicates strong storms coming. Both Hurricane Hugo (1989) and Hurricane Florence (2018) made landfall in the area shortly following the appearance of the Gray Man. Most reports say that the Gray Man is non-threatening and is usually strolling around the beaches, but given its unique history, it might make for a bit of a chill. There are several theories of who the Gray Man could be ranging from George Pawley, who owned Pawleys Island, and even as far as theories saying it is the legendary Blackbeard. It’s also entertained that it could be the spirit of a shipwrecked sailor that now seeks to warn residents of coming doom. If you say the Gray Man, how would you react?

Welcome to the final “Spooky Spotlight” of February as we explore a famous tale on this lovely leap day. This is the mystery behind Robert the Doll, one of the most famous haunted doll stories of all time. When looking at the toy ordinarily, it may just appear as a ragged and beat up sailor doll from days long ago, but when you examine its background a little deeper, you may read some eerie reports of encounters with it. Robert, who is currently on display at the East Martello Museum in Key West, Florida, takes its name from its previous owner, Robert Eugene Otto. It is said that the maid for the Ottos gave the doll to a young Robert who would take the doll with him wherever he’d go. Quickly, the family began to notice something wasn’t right, supposedly, Robert Eugene would be overheard having conversations with another voice of sorts. The family would wake up to their son screaming in his room, when they’d reach, furniture in the room would be turned up on its side. The boy would blame his doll for the way the room was messed up. Later, Robert would inherit his family’s house at 534 Eaton Street (Pictured Below) where he would spend his time painting and his childhood doll right alongside for the journey. Otto would marry, but his wife had a strong hate for the doll with rumors saying that she died from insanity. Today, when you visit the East Martello Museum, there are still odd occurrences with the doll, notably being the inability for visitors to take pictures of Robert himself. Check it out on your own if you’re interested in reading more!

If you want to hear “s’more” creepy stories, let’s check out this week’s edition of the “Spooky Spotlight”. As you may know, last week was a tale of a haunted bridge in Vermont, this week, we’re taking a peek at some bridges around the United States. These are the “Crybaby Bridges”; they get their name from supposed cries of babies and in a few tales, the mother can be heard crying as well. Some of the legends say that the mother would throw her unwanted child over the bridge and would end up later feeling so much remorse that she would commit su***de. Crybaby Bridges have a large area in the United States with most cases seemingly dotting the eastern side of the country. There are popular ones such as the one in Anderson, South Carolina, and another in Monmouth, Illinois, (both pictured below). While many of these bridges remain as folklore usually with uncredited backstories, they still bring in a lot of attraction from those who enjoy the thrill of the paranormal. So, what do you think, is it all talk or is there truly something disturbing at these bridges?

Hello everyone, this is the “Spooky Spotlight” today, let’s take a look at a devastating Valentine’s Day themed story. Yes, we’ll look at heartbreak; no, we will not give our relationship advice. Instead, we want you to hear about the Vermont-based bridge with a ghostly history. This bridge is called “Emily’s Bridge” and it’s a covered bridge in Stowe, Vermont. The actual name is the Gold Brook Bridge and it dates back to 1844, but as mentioned earlier, we are looking at a location with some heartbreak. Around the same time this bridge was built, a girl named Emily was set to elope with her lover at the bridge. He never showed, leaving her feeling heartbroken; so she decided to unfortunately take her own life and hung herself from the bridge’s roof. Following this story, claims came that people were being viciously attacked by the spirit of Emily. They had unexplained scratch marks after crossing and some cars experiencing “slashed” tires. Today, the Gold Brook Bridge or Emily’s Bridge, can still be visited and investigated. Modern sightings are still active reporting similar experiences as before.

Welcome, once again, to the “Spooky Spotlight”, today’s focus is on a very famous legend of the Bell Witch hauntings. It all started in 1817 in Robertson Country, Tennessee, where a farm family, the Bells, lived. Father John Bell Sr. claimed that he and his family had been attacked numerous times by an unknown force. He said that this force was invisible, could speak, interact with the environment, and also shapeshift. Other reports of the Bell Witch said that it posed an unnatural speed, possibly even coexisting in two places at one time. While there is still debate regarding if it is real or not, it has been a staple in Southern United States Folklore. So what exactly is the Bell Witch? There are several rumors that surround what it could be, the most popular one claiming it to be the spirit of Kate Batts who was neighbors with the Bells and had a quarrel over some land. There is an alleged story with no credibility, one surrounding Betsy Bell, the daughter of the family. It is said that she and her friends went exploring in the cave located on the farm’s property. One of the kids got stuck and was pulled down by the supposed Bell Witch. Today, the Bell Witch is one of the most documented and appreciated supernatural tales in America. You can visit the “Bell Witch Cave” as the owners give private tours during Summer months and October.

The time for this week’s edition “Spooky Spotlight” has arrived! Just like last week, we will look at ghosts of celebrities, but this time we’ll look at former English musician, John Lennon. For a little background, Lennon was a member of the widely popular band, The Beatles. After the band broke up, he pursued a solo career. Unfortunately, Lennon’s life was cut short when he was shot and killed on December 9, 1980, at just 40 years old. After his death, close friends and family claimed they were encountering his supposed spirit. He supposedly still resides in his apartment where he was murdered and still makes himself known to those he knew during his time alive. This is not the only place his spirit visits, however, as there are other reports in his former residences that he still calls them his home. Some of the bigger names to report having encounters with him include his wife, Yoko Ono, former bandmate, Paul McCartney, and Liam Gallagher, the lead singer of former English band Oasis. Even though there are many different reported locations of encounters with Lennon, one thing seems to remain the same that his presence is very comforting to those who knew him.

Welcome, once again, to the weekly “Spooky Spotlight”. Today, we will take a look at the supposed ghost of John Wayne. That’s right, the Duke himself who is credited with appearing in 184 movies and TV shows between 1929 all the way through 1976. The American actor, who died in 1979, supposedly haunts his former yacht, “The Wild Goose” which he bought in the 1960s. The first reports of Wayne’s spirit came just weeks after his death from an attorney named Lynn Hutchins who had bought it just before the Duke had passed. Hutchins claimed to have seen an apparition of a “big, tall figure, this fellow standing right there in the doorway…with a little bit of a smile on his face.” and also claimed it was wearing a cowboy hat before it vanished. Encounters with John Wayne have varied in different locations on the boat, such as one which took place in the bar where Hutchins reported seeing the spirit standing next to a chair he had just been sitting in. Oddly enough, in 1980, there was a wedding reception on The Wild Goose that had its own paranormal experience when the boat began to suddenly start heading for Newport Harbor, the place where John Wayne once lived. Have you ever encountered the spirit of a celebrity?

Welcome to this week’s edition of the “Spooky Spotlight”, we will examine an old Pirate’s Den in the Big Apple. Located on 12 Gay Street in New York City, this Manhattan building carries huge paranormal significance. Built in 1827, its first use was to house servants of Dutch colonists, and over time, the purposes have altered. Once an underground distillery during Prohibition. Today, it is said to be haunted by the Mayor of New York during the Great Depression, Jimmy Walker. Other reports include seeing partygoers donning “Roaring twenties” outfits of the rich. The first reports came when former Howdy-Doody puppeteer, Frank Parris and his family moved into the house where they encountered several disturbing encounters. Even though it is now a private residence, the rumors have not stopped and people still claim to see apparitions around the area. What do you think about the Gay Street Phantom? Is it fact or fiction?

Welcome to this week’s “Spooky Spotlight”, today we will focus on the notorious unsolved crime called the Black Dahlia after the victim’s popular nickname. In 1947, a rising actress named Elizabeth Short was murdered. In a disgusting fashion, her mutilated body was found by a mother and her child in Leimert Park located in Los Angeles, California. When the body was analyzed, it was discovered that her body had been cut in half and some of her organs displaced. Rumor has it that she haunts the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, where she was said to be a frequent guest. There, the entire second floor is closed to guests due to reports of spiritual disturbances, including the supposed ghost of the Black Dahlia herself. Today, you can visit Short’s grave at the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, or you can choose the alternative and visit her and others at the Millennium Biltmore.

Starting us off is the story of Pearl Bryan (Born: 1874). Bryan's tragic murder story is widely known as she was murdered at the age of 22 as well as being 5 months pregnant. Her decapitated body was found on a farm in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, on February 1,1896. Her secret lover, Scott Jackson and his roommate, Alonzo Walling, were both convicted of her murder which took place January 31, 1896. Although her body was quickly found, her head has never been located and rumored to have been burned by Jackson and Walling. Her spirit is said to haunt Bobby Mackey's Music World, a nightclub 2.5 miles away in the town of Wilder, Kentucky. She is rumored to haunt Bobby Mackey’s. Supposedly, this may be the work of satanists. Today, you can visit her grave at Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle, Indiana, her hometown.
