Dr Kate King joins us from the Noble Mind Podcast . On this episode we explore many themes including:
- The value of suffering, you have to VALUE something to suffer even in the first place. Suffering can point to what’s important to us!
- Our natural Aversion to suffering and how that becomes another layer of suffering on top of the original suffering
- The good news about how this is the part we can really work on with mindfulness and compassion practice
- The wonderful analogy Dr Kate shared about how sometimes you can walk past a table at a restaurant and know a couples having a hard time even though you might not hear what they are saying, sometimes our mind is like this - our thoughts might be rational but the vibe can still be hostile or critical !
- Understanding that the parts of ourselves that often cause us suffering often come from a place of trying to protect us

Michael Pringle was struggling with the paradigm shift of becoming a father. And despite years of practicing martial arts and meditation on a high level, the skills weren’t translating to moments of duress in his personal life. So, what was missing? How did Michael learn to bring mindfulness to the challenges of daily life?
In this episode, Michael Pringle discusses the healing power of self-compassion, describing how it helped him learn to better navigate moments of duress in his personal life. He explains how he was introduced to mindfulness through martial arts and explains how practices like kung fu have helped him develop a range of positive character traits. Michael also shares about his experiences teaching self-compassion and non-violent communication to marginalized and incarcerated youth.
Michael Pringle is the cohost of the Kind-Mess Podcast , a show that explores the implications of contemplative practice on our experience of modern life. Michael is also a certified mindful self-compassion teacher, a trauma-sensitive educator for incarcerated youth in Victoria, Australia, and an experienced martial artist.

New study on MSC and MBSR!

This excellent study from the lab of José Ramón Yela compared the effectiveness of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindful Self-Compassion in improving mindfulness and self-compassion, and their effect on anxiety and depression. The programs were similarly effective, with some interesting differences.

Protecting yourself from harm is a powerful aspect of self compassion

Option B ✨ Looking forward to joining you all today for my first Instagram Live!

・・・
Today at 12 PM PST we'll be hosting an Instagram Live with self-compassion expert Dr. Kristin Neff (). We'll be chatting with her all about her new book "Fierce Self-Compassion" and how to harness self-compassion in the face of hardship.

At the heart of her new book, Dr. Neff is breaking down self-compassion into two different branches: tender self-compassion and fierce self-compassion. This is how she explains the difference between the two and why both are needed for balance:

"The quintessential question of self-compassion is 'What do I need right now?' and more specifically 'What do I need to help alleviate my suffering?' The answer to this question changes depending on the circumstances. Sometimes what we need is to accept ourselves in all our human imperfection, to love ourselves as we are in the moment. But that doesn’t mean we necessarily want to stay as we are in the moment. If a herd of cattle is stampeding toward you, it’s not the time for self-acceptance, it’s time for action.

If tender self-compassion is metaphorically like a parent soothing his crying child, fierce self-compassion is like Momma Bear who ferociously protects her cubs when threatened, or catches fish to feed them, or moves them to a new territory with better resources. Just as tenderness can be turned inward so that we nurture and care for ourselves, the fierce energy of Momma Bear can also be turned inward to stand up for ourselves.

What’s essential is that these two faces of self-compassion are balanced and integrated so that we can be whole. When both are present, it creates a caring force that can be used to transform ourselves and the world around us."

Let us know in the comments if you have any questions for Dr. Neff! 💙
