Your mind is the preparation zone for the life you will lead and the emotions you’ll feel. It’s the prep-zone for the day you are going to have—sometimes it’s even the preparation for the moment you’re going to experience next. You determine how you are going to feel by the thoughts that you think in repetition.
All emotions are generated by the thoughts in your head. If you get mad at some woman in church, you may think it’s what sister so-and-so did that ruined your mood and hijacked your day. You may go to bed with her on your mind and think she stole your whole day. In actuality, you gave up your own day by allowing her words to stick around in your head all day. By repeating the thoughts of whatever she said or did over and over, you chose to keep on creating that original emotion throughout the day. That’s what ruined your mood all day long, because sister so-and-so wasn’t there all day. She left, but you kept her close in your own mind.
Nobody can take away what you don’t give them access to. So, when thoughts arise that don’t fit that Philippians 4:8 list, put the wall up! Say, “No, that’s not for me . . . I’m having a good day because I’m choosing to have a free mind.” You don’t have to be in prison to your own emotions—you take back your thoughts and you’ll take back your emotions. Even if the problems are outside of you, what you rehearse inside of you is what determines your emotions.
