Please join us in celebrating the phenomenal Dawn Brockett and her award-winning book, Unrestricted, as she receives two awards tonight at the Next Generation Indie Book Awards (the “Sundance Awards” for indie book publishers and authors).

Unrestricted is the 2024 Indie Book Awards 1st Place Winner in Women’s Issues and 3rd Place Grand Prize Winner in Nonfiction!

We at Harridan and Strumpet Books are honored to have supported Dawn in her publication. When we, two Harvard alumnae, formed our publishing collective on the ideals of intersectional feminism and a passion for progressive art that pushes established bounds, we could not have dreamt up a more fitting book than Dawn Brockett’s Unrestricted. Not only is Dawn’s memoir an empowering read you will sink into like a warm bath, it has the opportunity to make a real impact on the lives of girls and women who are battling anorexia—the most deadly mental health crisis that has been wildly misunderstood and mistreated. Until now.

Please pick up Unrestricted and share it with your friends, sisters, mothers, daughter, partners, and allies.

And help us toast the brilliant Dawn Brockett as she brings home two awards, among a sea of talented authors, tonight!

You can watch the Indie Book Awards’ livestream from 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET at:

TODAY IS THE DAY!

Happy release day to and her phenomenal book — Unrestricted.

Finding the words to describe how much this book means to me is difficult. What this book means to me extends beyond the role I played as an editor and publisher.

Dawn exemplifies the word courage: as a writer willing to lay her vulnerabilities on the page, as a woman seeking to empower other women and girls by owning and sharing her journey, as a survivor of anorexia — of one of the most fatal mental health crises, as a daughter, a wife, a friend, and more.

This is a book I needed to read in my younger years, and still need to read to this day, and for years to come.

I hope you’ll join me in celebrating Dawn and her book by buying Unrestricted at your local bookstore (it’s also available on major retailers such as Amazon) and spreading word about the release.

Unrestricted is far more than a memoir, than a survivor’s tale of overcoming anorexia. Unrestricted is threaded with stories of romantic and platonic love, of family, of food, of travel, and of literature. At times, Unrestricted reads like a French novel, at other times it left me more empowered to bring about change in my own life and others’.

Let’s help Dawn make waves in a world that needs her more than ever by reading and sharing Unrestricted far and wide!

PRAISE FOR UNRESTRICTED:

"Unrestricted is an inspiring narrative of Dawn Brockett's fight against anorexia nervosa and a compelling chronicle of recovery. For anyone who loves someone struggling with an eating disorder, this book will shine a light on both the ferocity of the disorder and what it takes to triumph."

This week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, which aims to shine a spotlight on these devastating mental illnesses. We are immensely proud to to be publishing Dawn Brockett: Writing and Speaking Events stunning memoir which documents her own journey through anorexia.

Repost : On March 7, the book I've written about my own trek through the dark forest of anorexia will launch at Harvard. From there, I will be sharing my story in bookstores and at universities around the country, in public and private events, with a message of hope and a call to action. In April, we will take the conversation to Europe.

Anorexia nervosa was the first classified eating disorder, and it remains today the mental illness with the highest mortality rate. An ongoing study recently showed that rates of anorexia have been increasing over the last 50 years.

Up to 10% of people with anorexia die within 10 years; up to 20% die within 20 years. The mortality rate for anorexia nervosa overall is estimated to be 12 times higher than the death rate of all combined causes for girls and women between 15-24 years old. (Data from ANAD)

For those who survive, the physical and psychological fallout from anorexia is brutal.

I am committed to changing these sobering facts. Loads of really important work is being done in this space, but we can do more, and we can do better-and we need to do both.

I aim to shine a glaring light on these jarring statistics in honor of the people (largely young women) they represent and to bring the voice of the patient to every table around which a conversation on eating disorders is occurring and to inspire many more of these conversations where they are needed most. I hope you'll join me!

As promised, you are hearing it here first. Unrestricted: How I Stepped Off the Tightrope, Learned to Say No, and Silenced Anorexia, is now available for pre-order.

In light of the attacks on women’s rights across the United States, the publishers have reduced the price of What Doesn’t Kill Her: Women’s Stories of Resilience to near-cost on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle. We’re also excited to announce that the book will soon be released in hardcover.

In late 2018, in the wake of the Me Too Movement and midterm elections deemed the Women's Wave, two Harvard-educated woman writers, Kerry Garvin and Elisabeth Sharp McKetta, dreamt of a collection of essays—a collective memoir—dedicated to the strength and resilience of women from all walks of life. It would be a book that could be plucked from shelves during times of adversity, lent to a mother, sister, daughter, or friend.

Now is that time for American women and our sisters abroad.

McKetta and Garvin sent out a call for true stories. Sixty brave women rose to the call and the book was born. What Doesn't Kill Her: Women's Stories of Resilience is a collection of sixty triumphant survival stories written by a diverse array of women.

These women are torchbearers who have generously shared their stories to guide you and remind you that you are not alone. Let their voices inspire you to continue the fight of the generations of women who walked before us.

*** Announcing Harridan & Strumpet’s Inaugural Book Release June 15, 2021 ***

“When someone is ill, many old cultures say that they have lost their story. I believe that reading the stories in What Doesn’t Kill Her will help each of us to trust and tell our own.” – Gloria Steinem

In late 2018, in the wake of the Me Too Movement and the Women’s Wave, two Harvard-educated woman writers, Kerry Garvin and Elisabeth Sharp McKetta, dreamt of a collection of essays dedicated to the strength and resilience of women from all walks of life. It would be a book that could be plucked from shelves during times of adversity, lent to a mother, sister, daughter, or friend. They sent out a call for true stories. Sixty brave women rose to the call and the book was born.

What Doesn’t Kill Her: Women’s Stories of Resilience is a collection of sixty triumphant survival stories written by a diverse array of women. Sometimes triumph is a soaring achievement in the face of adversity. Other times, it’s getting out of bed and putting one foot in front of the other. These stories feature culturally relevant topics such as advocating for healthcare, surviving s*xual assault, reconciling female ge***al mutilation, working in the s*x industry, overcoming breast cancer, motherhood after miscarriage, losing a husband in Afghanistan, and transitioning from male to female.
