Climate activists organise sit-in blockades, stick themselves to streets and oil plants, or create activist art events. They want to force politicians to act. Usually, their actions lead to nothing but criticism and public outrage. But is their protest pointless?

Barcelona is in the spotlight for its successes in (radical) climate activism.
Beginning in 2024 the University of Barcelona will be giving a compulsory course on the effects of climate change to its 14,000 students after a week of occupation and negotiation by End Fossil Barcelona.

In November, Elena, Lorenzo, Felipe and their fellow students occupied the University to fight for stronger action against climate change.
Talking to them, TEMA author Daniel Harper reveals how their actions showed what could be possible for climate activism โ€“ also beyond Barcelona.

In Drenthe, one of the Netherlandโ€™s smaller provinces with around half a million inhabitants, the 55-years-old activist Conny Darwinkel is fighting an ongoing mission against the fossil sponsor of the Drents Museum. Together with "Extinction Rebellion Drenthe" her strategy is "chafing" and nagging until this oily sponsorship stops.

A recipe for success or just another annoying incident for the museum?

"The fact that we ended up in jail was unpleasant, but also not surprising" says Ralph (name changed) one of the activists that blocked the coal mine in Cottbus.

In Cottbus, Germany, protests against coal are clashing with a lack of prospects for postcoal employment. However, a group of climate activists is sure that blocking coal power plants will still work to achieve their goal of climate protection.

But this seems to have the opposite effect that the activists hope for: instead of them becoming more concerned with the climate crisis and its causes through these actions, the impression arises that the indignation of politicians and journalists towards the form of action increases proportionally to the increase in radicalism of the actions.

What is the purpose of actions like the one in Cottbus if they mainly trigger feelings of annoyance? Can these protests move anything in this way?

Winter in war - Day 391

This self-portrait shows the Ukrainian photographer behind the photo diary โ€žWinter in warโ€œ.
Over the past three months, he gave us insights into his life during the winter in war.ย
We are so grateful to have had the possibility to work with him. He is such a talented photographer and lovely person.ย
We donโ€™t know how the Russian war of aggression will end but our editorial team will keep standing with Ukraine. Thank you for this journey. We hope to stay in touch and we look forward to seeing so many more of your photos.ย

Winter in war โ€“ Day 377

I rarely use black & white films in my practice. The last roll was in my camera for quite a while and I totally forgot about the taken pictures. This week, I finally finished it and was very touched to see that there were a few pictures from my last visit to my native town, Novoaidar, in the Luhansk region in September 2021. My grandparents live there and it was occupied by Russians within the very first days of the full-scale invasion. This photo shows a window in my grandparent's house that I couldnโ€™t visit since.

Winter in war โ€“ Day 364

โ€žI am Sevilya Nariman-qizi and I am a Crimean Tatar. My origins are from Crimea, a peninsula in the east of Ukraine with its own indigenous people (qฤฑrฤฑmlฤฑ), its own history, traditions and outlooks. Ukraine is my home; my origins and my peopleโ€™s history beat in me like a second heart. My whole family and everything I love is in Crimea, the place I could always return to freely, where I could be with my loved ones and be myself. Until the occupation of Crimea by Russia in 2014. Russia stole our sense of freedom and choice. Since then, I found being in stolen โ€“ Russian โ€“ Crimea uncomfortable and alien.

It was in 1944 when Russia first invaded Crimea and thousands of Crimean Tatars were deported and exiled from their homeland for over 45 years. Only in the late 1980s, the time of the perestroika and reconstruction, their land was returned to them. Thatโ€™s when my parents went back to Crimea. Back to their land, back home. Since 2014 and the renewed Russian occupation, they lead a personal resistance, not agreeing with the โ€œworldโ€ Russia brought on us. And they will keep resisting.โ€œ

This is a destroyed bridge over the Siverskyi Donets river. This river prevented the advance of Russian troops in the Donetsk region last year. Some bridges were destroyed by Ukrainian soldiers others got bombed by Russians. Without the bridges, Russian military was not able to cross the river. I went there recently with my friends from

The Donets is the longest river in eastern Ukraine and gives its name to the Donbas, an important coal mining and industrial region in Ukraine that has been at the centre of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict since 2014. The Donets River played an important role in the war, which has been going on for almost a year now. It was considered the biggest natural obstacle to the Russian offensive and thus also represented a strategically important defense line for the Ukrainian army.
The river is also important for Ukraine to manoeuvre militarily along the river and guarantee the water supply for important cities and agriculture. Today the river is in Ukrainian hands.

Winter in war โ€“ Day 334
This is a picture of โ€Malankaโ€œ (ะœะฐะปะฐะฝะบะฐ), a Ukrainian folk feast celebrated on January 13th.
Due to the war, mass events and celebrations were banned this year, but found and attended a small, private festivity in Vashkivtsi.

The tradition of โ€Malankaโ€œ is based on the New Yearโ€™s celebrations of the Julian calendar. On this day, men in traditional costumes, walk from house to house in the villages to ban evil spirits and welcome the New Year. These so-called โ€Malankaโ€œ-groups are made up of several characters played exclusively by men. First, the commander enters the courtyard and asks the family to let them in. If the entry is granted, the other participants follow: Grandmas and Grandpas โ€“ recognisable by their masks โ€“ Kings, Queens, and many more, until at the end of the procession the bears appear. Playing a bear is honorable and difficult; only unmarried men can take it on. The performance ends with a wild, noisy dance representing the bears fighting among themselves. In the end, the group receives money from the master of the house and moves on to the next house.

This tradition was preserved during World War first and second and even when โ€Malankaโ€œ was banned under the Soviet regime, the inhabitants of small villages managed to keep it from being forgotten.

Winter in war โ€“ Day 324
This is She works .ua photography lab, one of my favorite places in Kyiv. This is where I get all my films developed. Iโ€™m very impressed with how small businesses operate now during all the power outages. They are trying to keep their services the same high quality and as fast as they were in pre-war times. Sometimes the staff waits hours for electricity to come back and works overtime until very late in the evening to process orders as if there were no power outages at all. I donโ€™t know if I could keep working properly if it wasn't for them.

War in Ukraine โ€“ Day 317
This New Yearโ€™s Eve was very loud. Once president Zelenskiy finished his speech at midnight, Russia started sending us โ€œgiftsโ€ such as Iranian drones and rockets. Thanks to the Ukrainian Air Defence Forces most of them were shot down before they could hit their target. Like this rose โ€“ covered in snow and surrounded by trash โ€“ survived winter, Ukraine survived the whole of 2022 and hopefully will endure until Russia is defeated.

War in Ukraine Day 294 โ€“
During the power outages in Kyiv when we donโ€™t have any network connection, this radio is the only option for me to follow the news. When I bought this radio for our kitchen to listen to it while making breakfast, I couldnโ€™t imagine that one day we would actually have to use it to get information. This still life is the first picture in a series about winter in Ukraine for TEMA.

How do you prepare a car to go to the front?

When Russia invaded Ukraine in February, life changed for Neak in many ways. Continuing with his graffiti art became impossible.

But he soon found an opportunity to help the Ukrainian military during war: painting camouflage cars.

When bombs fall, life changes dramatically.

While last winter, young people in Kyiv were going to clubs and raves, just like in other big European cities, after the 24th of February partying became secondary.

Now that parts of Ukraine have been freed from occupation, raves start againโ€ฆ yet, another kind.

The .together movement organizes clean-up raves to help rebuilt Ukraine.

Q***r peopleโ€™s life paths donโ€™t fit in our heterogeneous society norms. This becomes much more visible with age.

What can be done about it, and how does the experience of ageing in our society differ between q***r and heterosexual people?

Christian Wapp, vice president of the Swiss association "q***rAltern" tackles these problems and tells us the story of a struggle that is unknown to many.

What makes a good neighbour?

Transatlantic Bounce] reveals, that a lot of migrants, like himself, do not fit the German idea of a good neighbour.

Stereotypical perceptions of migrants often lead to their exclusion from the housing market.

In his article, he looks for solutions by talking to a social worker based in Bremen, Germany: How can we break out of prejudiced thought patterns?

Life seemed to her like a surreal dream that had no end.

From one day to the next, the Hamburg-based photographer and Yana Kyrychenko lost her job and her own four walls. During this period, she sought shelter and protection with her friends to cope with the unpredictable circumstances.

Homelessness is a marginal phenomenon that receives little attention in politics and society. By revealing her own situation, the photographer attempts to shed light on the invisible.

Many pets in war suffer like she did. Hungry, frightened and wounded cats and dogs wandering among the ruins of their former homes. Animals are forced to survive under shelling or run away from fires. Others, are waiting to be rescued in locked apartments.

Sonia Sadovska and Dymtro Revnik left their jobs in the film industry to help them. But how do you save animals in the midst of an ongoing war?
