In the late 1850s/early 1860s Grafton Tyler Brown moved to San Francisco, initially working as a draftsman and then a lithographer for the firm Kuchel & Dressel. Brown created lithographs that depicted western towns: Santa Rosa, Fort Churchill and Virginia City.

Grafton Tyler Brown was hired to create lithographs of seven large-scale maps. Though he was not recognized publicly as such, he became California’s first African American contractor. Browns illustrations of the West served as commercialization of the developing nation.
