Dr. Abraham Mata is Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Lubbock Christian University, where he also serves as Foreign Languages Program Coordinator and head of the Spanish Education Program. Drawing on his family’s embodied experiences as Malaysian-Chinese immigrants, Daniel Ooi discusses the complex relationship between suffering, silence, and voice in his essay, Mother Tongue: A Meditation on Asian Silence.

A Malaysian-Chinese immigrant, Daniel grew up evangelical among Buddhist-Taoist relatives. He arrived in the U.S. at the age of seventeen, where he spent years unlearning decades of internalized racism. After navigating an overwhelming immigration process, he finally became a permanent resident in 2021.

This isn't a pro-life anthology, it's a pro-human anthology. Let's take back the narrative.

In our latest anthology, Right to Life, we want to provide a platform for people to use their voice for both justice and education. In this anthology, you will read stories about what it’s like to live in someone else's body; what it’s like to be someone in a society that often labels them as “other”; what it’s like to have to fight for the right to live in the same safety and comfort that should be granted to all, but is held by few.

Help us reach our goal and spread the word!

While mental health is a more openly discussed topic within society today, there is still stigma surrounding mental illness and wellbeing. This stigma keeps those struggling silent and prevents them getting the help they need.

Our Stories to Tell is intended to be part of a growing movement to reduce stigma, raise awareness and understanding, and amplify voices of those who are often silenced by societal judgements and indifferences. It covers a broad range of topics including depression, anxiety, bipolar, su***de, trauma, mental health and race, and much more.

Use code MENTALHEALTH10 to get 10% off of Our Stories to Tell during the month of May. Get it here: https://bit.ly/42MogJJ
