How is Christine Neumann-Ortiz living out the legacy of the commandos through her leadership? "The fight that I have dedicated so much of my life to has been about the immigration rights fight, but I will say that it’s never been in isolation or seen in isolation. The struggle for immigration rights goes hand in hand with the struggle for racial justice because so much of immigration politics is about legalizing racial profiling, rolling back the gains of the civil rights movement and the laws that were won through great sacrifice." Catch the rest of our exclusive interview! http://youthrisemke.com/cn.php

Christine Neumann-Ortiz is a nationally-recognized organizer and activist for immigrant/labor rights in Milwaukee and across the state of Wisconsin. "So when we’re talking about dignity, we’re talking about that worthiness that you get from being in community with others, and being seen as worthy within that community, so understanding yourself as worthy and seeing everyone around you as worthy because that community is built." "We still suffer from a lot of those same ills that we suffered in those times. The illusion of progress was there, but now with Trump in office, it gives us the opportunity, and I say that in all genuineness, it gives us the opportunity to really address some of the underlying causes and some of the underlying mindsets to why we have a hyper-segregated city, why we still continue to have the problems that we had back then, in 2017." We are proud to announce the release of Passing the Torch: Activism in Milwaukee Then and Now, our second edition of Youth Rise MKE.

For this issue, we learned from our elders who lead Milwaukee's open housing marches as young people, as well as from those we are deeming descendants of the marchers, people who are carrying on this legacy by “marching” in different ways to create positive change and work for justice in our city today.

We hope you enjoy it, feel inspired, and share it with your friends!

Stay tuned to our page to read more of our stories over the next few weeks.

Thanks for telling our story NNS! The stories we hear, know and spread about our city will only change when we start to tell different stories and engage different people in the actual telling of these stories. Youth voice is such an essential piece of the storytelling fabric in our city, and we are excited to be paving the way to promote youth voices and expand perspectives in Milwaukee. All of our students did such an amazing job!

Young people participating in an Urban Underground summer program launched the online Youth Rise Magazine, which profiles five central-city teens working to improve their communities.

"This conviction to do what is right has made Leonard who he is and has taken his activism beyond the walls of his high school. Leonard is also a talented poet and uses his art as an outlet and form of advocacy.

'Poetry is nothing but storytelling,' Leonard said. 'It is a bridge that connects us to other people.'"
