Ethiopia's current leader is Abiy Ahmed, who has been in office since 2018. Ahmed has implemented market-oriented economic policies, privatized state-owned enterprises, and attracted foreign investment.
He has made efforts to increase access to healthcare and education, and has introduced a genderbalanced cabinet. In terms of political reforms, Abiy has opened up the media landscape, released political prisoners, and invited previously banned opposition groups to return from exile. Ahmed's government has also undertaken several mega projects, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway, and various industrial parks.
Abiy has also launched the Green Legacy program, which aims to plant four billion trees across Ethiopia in a single year. The program was launched in 2019 and has since exceeded its target, with over five billion trees planted in 2020. The Green Legacy initiative is part of a broader effort to combat deforestation and address climate change in Ethiopia.
In addition, Abiy has played a key role in regional diplomacy. In 2018, he brokered a peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea, ending a two-decade-long conflict and earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019. He has also been involved in negotiations with Sudan and Egypt over the GERD, and has been credited with improving Ethiopia's relations with neighboring countries.
Under Abiy Ahmed Ali leadership, Ethiopia's economy has continued to grow, with an average annual GDP
growth rate of around 9% from 2018 to 2019. He has implemented policies aimed at attracting foreign investment, expanding the private sector, and increasing exports. Ahmed has also pursued debt restructuring agreements with China, among other countries, to ease Ethiopia's debt burden.
