Spanning across 72 pages, conducting 12 interviews, and boasting a plethora of record reviews — enough for me to lose count on them at least — Akti Zine posed quite a challenge for a solo assembly.

Now, after a brief cooling-off period, I find myself facing what some zine enthusiasts might term the "brick wall of the second edition," where the imperative is to make the paper bigger, better, and more comprehensive. Despite the fact that the paper is my cherished creation, I must as humbly as possible to admit that, in my opinion, Akti Zine Vol. 2 succeeded in achieving its goal; It serves as a simple DIY cut-and-paste exploration of experimentalists and experimental music, kicking off with interviews followed by musings on captivating sonic puzzles — that one might even dare to call audio recordings.

Anyways, I'll let you folks decide if this was worth the trouble.

Special thanks to Jani Hirvonen for his enourmous help making the zine digital and thus getting it to print mode and to Heikki Hautala for letting me use his scrap book sketches for cut and paste.

Dark Country is the first collaboration between Stockholm-based experimental musicians Jon Collin and Niclas Anderstedt Lindgren. On Dark Country you have the familiar echoes from Collin`s post-bluesy attack on strings, but this time accompanied with a considerable amount of speaker crackle and Lindgren`s clever yet reticent sound sculpting. All the sounds you`ll hear on Dark Country are created by live guitar improvisations and electronic processing thereof. Edition of 300 copies.

Channel Zero introduces an interesting take on the long running experimental band Jackie O Mo********er with its lengthy ritualistic drone loops and Eva Saelens' (Inca Ore) revolutionary roars. This unreleased live recording from 2006 proves that the oh-so-fluid project has always had an ear for true sonic disturbance and devout expanding of the consciousness. Limited edition of 100 copies.

3. Black Bevy (Antony Milton's new project) - 8300 Miles CD

Black Bevy is the name of the newly formed intercontinental collaboration between experimental musician Antony Milton (Sunken, Claypipe) and American visual/sound artist Thaniel Ion Lee. Their creation, 8300 Miles, is a six track long opus full of hefty and mind-bending drone, the most carefully crafted ambience and is by and large an very precise documentation of the two distinctive soundmakers working together. Edition of 200 copies.

4. Antony Milton - Off-White CS (reissue)

Synth-heavy and rhythmically sliced with sharp electronic percussion, Antony Milton`s "Off-White" exhibits no shyness in it`s ethos. With one foot shamelessly planted in a sentimental nostalgia for 1980's cry-yourself-to-sleep pop music and the other firmly remaining shin deep in the New Zealand underground "Off-White" raises its arms in salute to brainy romantics everywhere. Needless to say there are also extended sections of synapse distorting guitar and ecstatic drones aplenty as usually is the case when it comes down to the veteran New Zealand experimentalist. Limited edition of 75 copies.

Distro update: 番長 TASTE 7" (IDDB046)

Mark Andersson, Antony Guerra and an mysterious third person "Mariyo" have formed a trio together and what a trio 番長 TASTE seems to be!

The 7" starts with detuned syrup riffing and drums sounding all Moe Tuckerish. Very sassy, very classy. Like an alternative soundtrack to Ferris Bueller's Day Off!

On the flip side things turn more inward and no wave. Lo-fi production feels like a cherry on top of this. We want more. We want more.

Distro update:
L*D Fundraiser - Fashionably Late For The Apocalypse CS & U.Schütte - Unkugel

Two very classy recordings from the eclectic Belgian label Knotwilg has reached AKTI's doorstep!

First one of those two is L*D Fundraiser's Fashionably Late For The Apocalypse cassette. These New Zealanders are really are trip worth taking. Toy soldier type of percussive elements, synth drones, high pitch feedbacks, naive melodies... you name it. L*D Fundraiser seems to take awesome selections from the world of culture and then moldes them, presenting an epic soundtrack for the apocalypse. Outstanding tape! 80 copies.

On the 7" Mr. Schutte from Datashock, Phantom Horse etc. creates tones, rhythms and drones with modular synthesis in the way that a vision of late seventies electronics from Germany crosses my mind. If Harmony and "Puutarhassa" era Lau Nau would collaborate, in my head it would sound something quite close to this. These two tracks pretty much show us how high fidelity electronic music should be done. Limited to 150 copies.

Distro pick:
J.Koho - Aurinkovuosi CS (Ikuisuus)

Sound artist J.Koho (some of you may remember him as Kulkija from early 2000`s 267 Lattajjaa releases) has been quietly building a stubborn vision in the finnish underground through various releases mainly put out by the legendary and long running label Ikuisuus. Aurinkovuosi gathers Koho`s calming, but short drone singles released on various ltd. edition tapes by label Vuosi to a one proper release.

Well crafted and stereoscopically interesting drones glide one by one soothing you to a contemplative & slightly altered state. Must by for all the bedroom dreamers out there. Edition of 80 copies.

Teemu Ruissalo- folder style CD-r (Toiminta)

New label operated by some Helsinki sound art youngsters kicks off with a playful and sometimes even devout CD-r release from Teemu Ruissalo. Delicate and not so delicate field recordings mashed together with radio samples, human gnarls, church seremons etc. All in all a large pool of various sound sources mixed together in pretty creative way. Handmade and packed in recycled jewel cases. I`m not sure how big this edition is, but it must be pretty small. As far as I know only available from Akti Distro and for a decent price as well.

Distro pick:
Mogao - Finger Pointing To The Moon CD (Satatuhatta)

Rough textures, subdued piano punches and occasional bursts of noise interplay in Mogao`s latest full length that came out not so long ago from the northern Satatuhatta label. While Rajanen's vision sometimes reminds me of beloved experimental projects such as Idea Fire Company or even Ahti & Ahti, I get a feel that Finger Pointing To The Moon is not planned album in a sence that it would pick aesthetic pieces from album or two and combine them to a soup of cultural references.

To me this album feels like a gifted noise artist is starting to open up more and more to different possibilities inside the creative process and I cannot wait to hear what he`s up to next.

Bromp Treb - Bald Eagle Over Food City LP (Ikuisuus, Artsy)

"The same places, things and people can have many different names depending on who is doing the calling..."

American sound artist Neil "cloaca' Young a.k.a Bromp Treb gets super personal on his latest. He delivers 13 deformed compositions which little by little show us layers of beauty and stagnant melancholy. Bromp Treb takes us through what seems to be a carcass of an American smalltown, each track representing a certain place or a setting. The soundworld of the LP varies from arhythmic loopery (a very common attribute on many Artsy Records releases...) to a drunken one man marching band playing his guts out.

"A fat bald eagle lazily circles above the grocery store parking lot..."

It might take some time to digest Bald Eagle Over Food City but I promise that the experience will be well worth it. This record carries within it a special kind of honesty.

"Sometimes the simplest idea is the best: to PLAY. That is, to not to rehearse, to not to plan, to not to ”compose”. To only play – start, go on, finish. Pymathon was formed in the summer of 2005 in Turku, Finland. Initially the band was a guitar-drums duo, but as the years rolled by Pymathon evolved into a quartet. And what a quartet! Thunderously blasty drumming, totally morbid axe work, poisonously lethal noise and unforgivingly sick vocals! Pymathon play their expressive Death-Thrash through the prism of free jazz, noise and free improvisation. This is the only way to preserve a sort of ”never ending demo-phase”. Metal is best when it is RAW when it has just about entered its initial stages of existence – when it is still trapped inside the void of unknowing. Metal does not get better with age – it’s actually quite the opposite. Pymathon go backwards in time, they stop the time, bend it a little bit, go through it. TOTAL improvisation is the ONLY way to reach the early sound of Thrash and Death Metal – the chaotic sound of an early demo by Kreator, Sarcofago, Demilich or Carcass for that matter. All members of Pymathon have been active in the Finnish experimental underground for couple of decades. And paradoxically, with their thoroughly improvised approach, metal DOES get better with time. In the summer 2020 Lau Nau did a video performance Live in the Orchard for the Munich based concert series frameless. This record includes two straight takes from the live performance, remixed with other material Lau Nau recorded in the same vein in the same place, a tiny village on an island in the Western coast of Finland.

Hi folks! We are going to start 2022 with 3 CD releases; Pymathon, Acid Mothers Temple and Lau Nau. Woooooow! All of these are coming in January-Feb in ltd. 200 copies.

Alongside the CD business we are doing a limited tape from Joseph Allred`s unique Regeneration of Time. It`s available for streaming in AKTI`s bio if you want to check it out...
..and we are doing a zine covering Finnish Experimental Underground, label and it`s outer branches. There is going to be interviews from Tom Greenwood of JOMF, Marja Ahti, Lau Nau, Tommi Keränen, Jussi Lehtisalo of Circe & Ektro, Steven R. Smith, Topias Tiheäsalo, Bill Nace, some reviews of finnish and foreign records and a mailing list to labels products. AKTI Zine will be written in english. I`ll try to get it out by the time I receive the CD`s from the factory.
