Frank August has just released 2 limited expressions! Their first Cask Strength Single Barrel and their Case Study Program with 01 | Mizunara | Japanese Oak release.
_
CEO and Co-Founder, Jonathan Crocker has been successful in enlisting the industry’s heavy weights when selecting the 5 barrels for this limited release. A combined 116 years of master distilling and master blending went into hand selecting these barrels.
_
Due to NDA agreements, sourcing and the collective talent shall remained unnamed.
_
Frank August appeared on the scene with a sexy minimalist bottle that can double as a decanter. Rich auburn Straight Kentucky Bourbon with notes of Carmel and Vanilla!! Having a bevy of accomplished bourbon industry vets in their corner doesn’t hurt!
I cannot wait to try this and share my review.
_
Here are some official tasting notes from the release:
Single Barrel:
Nose: Baking Spices , Mild Oak
Palate: Cinnamon, rye balanced with Vanilla/Carmel.
Finish: A long finish picking up the baking spices and hints of black cherry
_
Case Study: 01 Mizunara Japanese Oak
Nose: Butterscotch and Mild Rye
Palate: Butterscotch and Apple
Finish: Butterscotch and a gentle Kentucky hug

Willett Distillery
🥃 The Bar at Willett
📍1869 Loretto Rd,. Bardstown, KY
_
How far would you drive for a cheeseburger? But not just any cheeseburger. A Willett cheeseburger crafted by none other than Executive Chef, John Sleasman.
_
As soon as you walk up the spiral staircase from the Willett gift shop, your senses are teased and aroused. Perfectly formed hand patties are being grilled to perfection, creating an aroma that stirs an exhilarating anticipation.
What herbs and seasonings are blended to create such a euphoric experience? I dare not ask such intrusive questions!
_
My only worry on this brisk Saturday morning, is that I arrive as soon as Willett Bar is open. For they only sell 11 cheeseburgers every Saturday.
_
As you can see from the photos I posted, I was successful in my quest.

With that first bite, my eyes closed and I am swept up in a wave of flavergasms. This is by far, the best cheeseburger I wish I never had. For nothing else will compare.
How am I to top this? As my eyes open, I see before me, 3 Willett Family Estate bourbons; a 17 year, 16 year, and a 12 year
_
Starting with the 17 year, the day just keeps getting better.

If you have ever tried Orphan Barrel Whiskey, history will tell you to that you better grab this one while you can!
This 14 year old juice marries the last remaining stocks of Barterhouse, Forged Oak, and other crafted Rhetoric releases!!! The profile in this might be too much for my palate to handle.
Tasting Notes: According to the release this features spicy notes of rye and pepper and then finishes with sweet notes of syrup and fruit.

🥃 Castle & Key 4yr Small Batch Bourbon
Mash Bill: 73% white corn, 10% rye, 17% malted barley (unusually high)
Proof: 98
_
This bourbon comes with a lot of fanfare and anticipation, especially since Marianne Eaves (First Female Master Distiller) was responsible for the recipe (mash bill), processes, and distillation until 2019.

Now for my thoughts on this young bourbon:
Nose: Brown Sugar with a little toasted honey
Palate: Seems very much like spice but not in a hot way, almost tangy. The spice must be the ethanol.
Finish: The finish was fast! Maybe 10 seconds. It dissipated from my taste buds too quickly.
_
I cannot wait for the other barrels to mature a few more years.

🥃: Old Fitzgerald 11yr - Bottled in Bond

Mashbill: 75% Corn, 20% Wheat, 5% Malted Barley.

This Old Fitz 11yr is phenomenal.
Heavenly brown sugar nose, first presents the sweetness found in the 8 year that was so good, followed with the complex Fitzgerald funk found in the older 14 and 15 years on the finish. Heaven Hill really hit the bullseye on this one for me.

Michter’s Distillery holds back this years release of Michter’s 10 year Bourbon.
_
"Over the more than two decades since we restarted Michter's in Kentucky, we have had several years where we've chosen to hold back particular offerings," observed Michter's President Joseph J. Magliocco. "Our goal is to put out the greatest American whiskey. When we think something is already wonderful, but will become spectacular with a bit more aging, we have not been shy about waiting to release it. When it comes to whiskey, there's no substitute for patience and time."
_
I have a feeling that when the 10 year bourbon is released in 2023, it will surpass any and all expectations.

Charlie and Andy Nelson with distillery have released a Reserve Bourbon aptly named Nelson Bros. Whiskey.
_
Proof 107.8
Nose: maple syrup & melted brown sugar
Palate: carmel with a slight hint of cherry
_
I have to say this bourbon is smooth with no burn. I can see myself drinking this with a nice cigar and eating some cherry pie. (What a great idea)

My desk is a bit messy, do you recognize everything that is on it?
My drink of the night is this is the Alabama Style Whiskey which upon first pour you will notice the long legs which indicates high levels of sugar. The taste is overwhelmingly apple at first but then turns into an apple butter. At 85 proof it is not hot at all and the finish is about 20 seconds. I would not consider this a daily drinker but rather a “I have a hankering for something different” drink.

This here is Old Carter barrel strength bourbon batch 10. Coming in at 116.8 proof.
With tasting notes of chocolate and a hint of hazelnut, you cannot go wrong. It is great neat, with a cube, or a drop of purified H2O.

Don’t forget that amazing crystal clear ice from Doggery Craft Ice

I spied a few thousand barrels in my adventure and came across this Jim Beam barrel. Not sure the year or which Mash bill is in this barrel but a feeling of Americana fell upon me. Did you see the angels share? Yes, that is some glorious liquid being given to the angels seeping out of the staves.
_
Emigrating from Germany and settling in Kentucky, the Bohm family (name changed to Beam once in the US) sold their first barrels of corn whiskey in 1795 called Old Jake Beam Sour Mash. Yes, the Beam family is a true original in the bourbon world. (I love history)
