A Legend of Bloody Mary . . .
There is a cemetery that is nearly hidden on the grounds of an old camp outside Mansfield. In the graveyard, there was laid a lonely stone with the name Mary Jane engraved upon it. Above the grave, a massive tree once stood tall and mighty before vandals snatched up a chainsaw, placed the blade against the trunk, and cut it clear to the ground. But since the 1960s and before it was toppled, teens from the surrounding communities would come to the grave and stand above it. They would stare at the aged tree and the lone grave beneath because legends had been passed on to them that the woman buried beneath it was a witch. After family laid her to rest, a cross appeared on the tree’s bark, and the sap flowed blood-red down its trunk. Those who visited the grave would chant softly, “Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary,” and wait for her to rise. Those who jumped over her grave and spit on it would come to some horrible death.
