Hi Everyone: Brooke Here.
I recently was reading some of the great banter and debate over at Momentum Sarnia: Engaging Politics Freely - if you have not followed that group I'd recommend it. It's a hot group that sees lively and spirited debate. It's certainly in the trenches of cultural opinion locally here in Sarnia. So check that out!
Was reading a post this AM and a statement was made that went a little something like this "well if you don't want the government tracking you, then ditch your mobile phone".
Ah...one of my favourite throw away lines from people who are ok with more government creep into the private lives of its citizens.
Let me begin by saying - this person is right. The government, big tech and third parties (ad co's, corps, small biz) are all fishing in the meta data of our technology. As an avowed brand builder, I know and understand this side of tech and we use and wield it on behalf of my clients over at www.brookedaye.ca.
It's certainly true that all things we say, type and post is being aggregated to either control or sell us things.
But here is the rub with that....
We never bought into it knowing that was the case at the start. Over time we learned that all of this was going on, and it was then that we made the trade off that the upsides (convenience and amplifying powers of a mobile device) were worth more scrutiny and sales at our virtual doorsteps or we just figured we could do nothing about it anyway. We sort of had to accept it.
Horse was outta the barn...
We never really gave permission. We got hustled a bit. And scammed at the most. Some were out there warning, but those people like in many moments these days got the "tin foil hats".
So when people get nervous about more government creep it's because of this. It's a statement to the fact that we feel there is already enough imposition and we'd like to maintain some of our autonomy and private spaces.
It also comes from the fact that we never really get to give permission. Tech invades, breaks things and makes such a noise that it's hard to keep up with its potential upsides and downsides. We focus on how it earns us money and makes our lives easier pushing away the negatives for a later date.
Some feel tricked about this. Angry. That anger is real. Can't be ignored.
It's leading to push back on potential controls of our movement and ownership of our bodies because we were scammed by big tech with our data. And that still cuts deep.
So while some might not be able to toss that phone away, they want some say in what happens next. They want the facts and want to be able to weigh in what they are giving up. "Juice worth the squeeze" so to speak.
Everyone would love a mobile device free of the CSIS, CIA and some company selling you products...everyone would appreciate that world.
This is what people who push back on the creep ask for.
Decent ask I reckon. 😀
