Albina Cabrera, Latin Partnerships and Editorial Manager at KEXP, has dedicated her career to amplifying diverse voices and creating community through music. I had the honor of talking with her for my latest OIGO, and I wanted to say more about her incredible talent.

Born on the border of Argentina and Chile, her early exposure to independent artists fueled her passion for culture and public media. After working in Argentina's national news agency, Télam, she transitioned to KEXP, first as a fan and later as a full-time content producer.

In 2020, Cabrera joined KEXP full-time, becoming the station's first Latin American content producer. She now manages local and international partnerships and hosts El Sonido, where she curates Latin music and stories that highlight the diverse, modern sounds of the region. Cabrera emphasizes the importance of representation, making the music accessible to new audiences while challenging stereotypes about Latin America.

Her work at KEXP has taken her across Latin America, most notably with Live on KEXP from Argentina, a project that allowed her to bring her two worlds together. Cabrera and KEXP recorded 12 live sessions in Buenos Aires, partnering with local public media to share these performances across the country. This fusion of Latin American culture and KEXP's ethos of musical discovery reflects her mission to build bridges between communities.

Cabrera is proud of the impact she’s made, both as a leader and as a role model for future generations. For her, KEXP is more than a radio station; it’s a platform for connection, empathy, and the celebration of Latin American culture.

Albina Cabrera builds bilingual content at KEXP that brings listeners closer together

JOIN US | At join us on September 22 for our in-person WECAN event, “How Worldviews and Climate Justice Can Remake a World in Crisis,” to hear stories and deeper analyses from movement leaders and change-makers who are building a healthy and equitable world for current and future generations. Register and learn more: https://tinyurl.com/yck7c4v2

We are at a choice point for humanity. As social and ecological crises escalate globally, it is clear that the dominant cultural worldview, informed by colonization, patriarchy, capitalism, and racism is displaying a relationship with Nature and each other that is devastatingly unjust and out of balance. To change the present and future, it is imperative to change the narrative and amplify worldviews and stories of climate justice solutions that transform the dominant worldview from an extractivist, colonial paradigm of “exploit and extract” to a sustainable, globally-conscious one of “respect and restore.”

At this event, movement leaders and change-makers will weave together stories, worldviews, and experiences of restoration and justice that demonstrate the healthy and equitable world we know is possible and needed. We knew in our bones this time was coming, and now we must act in solidarity more than ever, continuing to build a powerful movement founded on principles of justice, love, and a fierce dedication to our planet and our communities.

Speakers include: Casey Camp Horinek (Ponca Nation), Ponca Nation Environmental Ambassador and WECAN Board Member, Turtle Island/ USA; Helena Gualinga (Kichwa), Indigenous Youth Climate Leader, Ecuadorian Amazon; Jacqui Patterson, Founder and Executive Director of The Chisholm Legacy Project, Turtle Island/ USA; Osprey Orielle Lake, Founder and Executive Director of Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) Turtle Island/ USA; Moderation by Nina Lakhani, Senior Climate Justice Reporter, The Guardian, Turtle Island/USA.

This event is also the pre-launch of the forthcoming book by Osprey Orielle Lake, "The Story is in Our Bones: How Worldviews and Climate Justice Can Remake a World in Crisis," to be released in January 2024. Abundant hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served.

This event is part of WECAN’s 2023 Climate Justice Forum, taking place concurrently with Climate Week and the UN General Assembly. Learn more about all our events and advocacy efforts at Climate Week here: https://www.wecaninternational.org/climate-week-2023

Press Statement
December 13, 2020

IAWRT demands the immediate release of arrested Filipino journalist:
- Lady Ann Salem was held incommunicado for almost 36 hours

The International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) is appalled over and strongly condemns the continuing detention of the organisation’s Communications Officer and Filipino journalist Lady Ann Salem, who was apprehended from her house on Thursday December 10.

In a short video posted by the news channel AlterMidya, Salem said she was forced to have her back turned for about an hour as the police planted evidence in her home, including firearms and explosives. This she told the Philippine media while surrounded by a phalanx of police officers who marched her to their vehicle shortly after her first court appearance on Friday:

https://www.facebook.com/386290531520414/posts/1858817630934356/?sfnsn=wa

Salem initially went missing on December 10, International Human Rights Day. Her family and colleagues launched a relentless search for her from one police headquarters to another, until a photo of her in a white police vehicle went viral.

Salem was shuttled to one police station after the other before her lawyer Kristina Conti was able to speak to her. Conti says this was unlawful as an arrested individual should be immediately brought to the nearest police station.

Salem was finally taken to Camp Bagong Diwa at 6PM , where she spent the night. According to Conti, Salem was supposed to stay in the said facility until her COVID-19 swab test results were out. However, the police brought her to the prosecutor’s office the next day to beat the 36-hour window within which charges must be filed.

Her family, who according to Philippine law should have been granted access to her, was denied this right. She only managed to speak to her lawyer on December 11 during the inquest proceedings.

The circumstances around Salem’s arrest and her continuing detention is a clear breach of international human rights and an alarming development in the dire situation that journalists and press freedom advocates continue to face in the Philippines. IAWRT, along with the rest of the global media community, continue to press for her release and that these baseless charges are dropped.

14/12/2020

This Monday December 14th on KPFA Radio’s "Women’s Magazine" we look at how racial Capitalism and Patriarchy have created a punitive underfunded child care system in the U.S. where the the average hourly wage of child care workers is $10.72 per hour, many of the women in need of child care are black and brown women and few get any government support in accessing child care. This system is informed by the history of slavery in the U.S. where women’s job to reproduce the work force is required but never supported. And the reality in our neoliberal economy is that many women especially women of color are the essential workers during covid and are working 2-3 jobs just to survive and yet rarely getting any government support for child care.

Today we talk to Marcy Whitebook from the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment at UC Berkeley, Clarissa Douthard with Parent Voices Oakland and Loira Limbal director of the award winning documentary about child care “Through the Night” that shows how caregivers balance the demands of “women’s work” while navigating systemic racism, sexism and classism in the U.S. today.

And this Monday December 14th is also a fund drive show for KPFA so please call in during the hours of 1-2pm PST to KPFA Radio at 1.800.439.5732 or online at KPFA.org and donate any amount you can to help keep voices like this and stories about women on the frontlines stay on the air. It is because we are a listener sponsored station that we can have these radical and unheard voices on the air. So please call and support us this Monday between 1-2pm PST. And please share this announcement with others.
