16/08/2022

A team of Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is expected to visit Pakistan in September to conduct “on-site” visit in order to verifying steps taken by the country to curb money laundering and terror financing before it finally exits the watchdog’s grey list.
The FATF in June hinted at Pakistan’s removal from the grey list after it concluded that Islamabad had complied with its 34-point plan of action. The global financial watchdog had also agreed to send its team for the verification of those steps.
A successful on-site visit will pave the way for Pakistan getting out of the grey list.
Pakistan was placed on the grey list by the FATF in June 2018 for deficiencies in its system to curb money laundering and terror financing. It was first given a 27-point action plan and later another 7-point plan to comply with the FATF’s standards.

On Independence Day, Sindh IG Ghulam Nabi Memon honoured the actor with the title of Honorary Superintendent of Police (SP) at the CCPO office in Karachi.

Mountaineer Naila Kiani on Friday has successfully scaled her third peak over 8,000 metres in height, making her the first Pakistani woman to achieve this milestone.
Kiani reached the top of Gasherbrum-1 – the 11th highest mountain in the world despite extreme weather conditions between the C2 and C3 points.
The Dubai-based banker summited K2, the second highest peak in the world, in July. Prior to that, Kiani had ascended the world's 13th highest mountain, Gasherbrum-II, in 2021.
Last month, Pakistan celebrated Samina Baig becoming the first woman from the country to summit K2.
The 31-year-old had reached the top of the 8,611-metre (28,251-foot) peak as part of a seven-member local team and was followed hours later by Naila Kiani.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had praised Baig and Kiani, with his office tweeting that both "have emerged as symbols of courage and bravery".
Pakistan is home to five of the world's 14 mountains higher than 8,000 metres, and climbing them all is considered the ultimate achievement of any mountaineer.

Railways and Aviation Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique informed the National Assembly on Wednesday that government progress was made in talks for restoring the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights on the US and UK routes.
Speaking in the National Assembly during the Question Hour, the minister also said that the government planned to re-open the Roosevelt Hotel instead of selling it, adding that the matter had been taken up with the relevant court.
“The ban on the flights to UK and Europe was imposed due to a careless statement made by the former aviation minister in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. He did not read the statement that was written down to him rather he gave his own statement regarding the fake licences of pilots,” Rafique said.
“The government's top priority is to resume the PIA flights on the US and the UK routes. Positive progress has been made in this regard. We have talked to the UK and hope the route will be restored. We are also talking to Canada,” he added.
Speaking about the Roosevelt Hotel, the minister said that the quick fix to the matter was to spend a little sum of money and run the hotel. “Personally, I am against selling the Roosevelt Hotel. Investing a little money in this hotel can bring it back to good condition,” he added.

10/08/2022

Pakistan on Wednesday strongly denounced the Modi-led BJP government's move to mark August 14 -- Pakistan's independence day -- as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’.
The Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson said that the “revisionist” BJP-RSS regime “sought to hypocritically and one-sidedly invoke the tragic events and mass migration that occurred in the wake of Independence in 1947”.
According to the foreign ministry, the BJP’s “deplorable” aim, as part of its divisive political agenda, was “wantonly attempting to play with the sentiments of the people through distorted interpretation of history”.
“If the Indian leaders genuinely care about agony, suffering and pain, they must work to improve the conditions of the Muslims and other minorities in India,” said the statement.
The MoFA stated that the last seven decades were replete with “undeniable proof that India’s espousal of secularism was a sham”.
The fact is that today’s India is an undeclared ‘Hindu Rashtra’ that has no place or tolerance for other religious minorities, especially Muslims who are faced with discrimination, persecution and political and socio-economic exclusion.”
The FO advised New Delhi to desist from politicising events related to Independence and instead sincerely honour the memories of those who made sacrifices for a better future for all.

03/08/2022

After the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) ruled that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) received "prohibited funds", the federal cabinet started contemplating three options including imposing a ban on the Imran Khan-led party.
The ECP on Tuesday said the PTI received 'prohibited funds' from 34 foreign nationals and 351 companies based outside the country.
The party was issued a show cause notice after the unanimous verdict — reserved in June earlier this year – by the three-member bench of the ECP headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja.
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said that under the first option, the government could forward the matter to the Supreme Court as per Article17 (3) of the Constitution to ban the PTI.
The minister said another option is to declare the PTI a foreign-aided political party and take further legal action. In the Hanif Abbasi case, Tarar said the apex court made the affidavit subject to the decision of the ECP in the funding case.
Moreover, Tarar said the federal minister said the government could also approach the apex court to seek legal action against former prime minister Imran Khan for submitting “fake affidavit” to the electoral body.
At a press conference in Islamabad, Federal Minister for Energy Khurram Dastgir said that he will go to the top court for the formation of a full court on the PTI prohibited funding case verdict.
“We will request the Supreme Court to constitute a full court in this case. Justice was delayed for 8 years, now we want the Supreme Court to decide on it at the earliest,” he remarked.
Dastgir further said the coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will ensure the implementation of the Constitution.
“This gentleman [Imran Khan] kept taking money from outside. But today the sources of illegal funds have been detected which shows who was supporting him to spread chaos and unrest in the country since 2014..”
“Imran claims to be righteous and trustworthy but his affidavit turned out to be false,” he added.

About 343 cell sites of three cellular mobile operators (Telenor, Zong and Ufone) and PTCL have been affected due to floods.

A Supreme Court bench at Lahore Registry relegated Hamza Shahbaz to the interim chief minister of Punjab after Pervaiz Elahi challenged the shock ruling by the deputy speaker which rejected PML-Q's ten votes amid a crucial vote.

The three-member bench of the top court led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial conducted the proceedings via video link in wake of the rush in the courtroom.

During the hearing, CJP Bandial remarked that it looked like Dost Mazari issued his ruling against the court’s decision.

The court ordered the deputy speaker to submit his written reply and adjourned the hearing till Monday (July 25) adding that the next hearing would be held in the country’s federal capital Islamabad.

Pakistan has dispatched humanitarian assistance and relief goods through a special flight to the flood-affected people of eastern Afghanistan, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Friday.
Addressing a ceremony in connection with the delivery of relief goods to Afghanistan at Nur Khan Airbase, the foreign minister said that the relief supplies included tents, blankets, clothing items, cooking oil and sugar.
FM Bilawal maintained that Pakistan shared the grief of the Afghan people and stood in solidarity with them during these difficult times.
""Our relief efforts are a humble testament to the fraternal bonds that exist between the two countries"", he added.
FM Bilawal called upon the international community to step up relief efforts to support the Afghan people who had faced one calamity after another, emphasising that the international community could not abandon the people of Afghanistan in these difficult times.
"Pakistan has been advocating at all levels that the international community must engage with Afghanistan to avoid its economic collapse", he said, hoping for a "stable, prosperous and connected" Afghanistan.
Last week, flash floods in Afghanistan, which had been occurring since July, killed at least 39 people.
