On the 77th anniversary of the 228 Incident, Qiao Collective is excited to share an original translation of Lan Bozhou’s 1987 publication “A Beautiful Century,” one of the first Taiwanese accounts of that event which was originally published just weeks after the end of 40 years of brutal martial law. “A Beautiful Century” is the story of Dr. Guo Xiucong (郭琇琮), a Taiwanese communist and martyr of the White Terror period, as told through the recollections of his widow and comrades. In recent years, the US government and corporate media have launched a coordinated campaign to criminalize Chinese Americans, peace activists, and other left organizations that dare to criticize the US's warmongering foreign policy towards China.

This media slander, social enforcement, and state intimidation recalls the height of Red Scare tactics during the McCarthyist era. These tactics are designed to derail the anti-imperialist left and to manufacture consent for US escalation towards war with China. Just as the US state has coalesced around a New Cold War against China, it is launching a New Red Scare to silence critics of its belligerent foreign policy.

What does the US have to gain from Pelosi's visit to Taiwan?

Any response China takes will be construed as an unprovoked escalation, justifying increased weapons sales to Taiwan, US naval exercises through the Taiwan strait, and increased US military presence in the region.

Let's be clear: many US strategists are *hoping* China takes military action. They would love to have a reason to further isolate, sanction, and encircle China. They would sacrifice the people of Taiwan to goad China into war. Don't be surprised when China doesn't take the bait.

We already see Western media defaulting to false equivalencies, talking about "heightened US-China tensions." This is not mutual escalation: the US is toying with China's red lines in hopes of uniting a global alliance against China, as the war in Ukraine has done for Russia.

It's a delusion to think that any of this has to do with US concern for Taiwan. In the US imagination, Taiwan remains the "unsinkable aircraft carrier" of the unfinished Cold War—a tool to advance an anti-China agenda. This too is part of the dehumanizing project of imperialism.

The U.S. right has invoked China and the DPRK's abortion access laws to justify overturning Roe. Meanwhile, liberals presume China is a repressive, anti-abortion society despite "the freedom to not have children" being codified in Chinese law.

The fact is, socialist societies have always been at the forefront of ensuring abortion and contraceptive access.

On May 4th, 1919, the May Fourth Movement (五四運動) began! Students gathered in Tiananmen Square to protest the government's acquiescence to the Treaty of Versailles, which handed German colonial concessions in Shandong to Japan.

During WWI, China joined the Allied powers, sending more than 140,000 Chinese laborers who worked alongside British and French forces. The largest non-Western contingent in the war, Chinese workers dug trenches, cleared mines, and repaired roads for the war effort.

After the war, the Republic of China hoped to win equal recognition by Western powers. But in spite of its principles of "self-determination," postwar treaties perpetuated China's colonial domination by handing German concessions in Shandong over to another imperial power—Japan.

This humiliation sparked new mass calls for social change. It exposed the limits of the 1911 Xinhai Revolution which had overthrown the Qing government. Mao later described May 4th as a "a new stage in China's bourgeois-democratic revolution against imperialism and feudalism"

Disillusioned with the false promises of Western democracy, some students turned to Marxism and the model of the Bolshevik Revolution. Based on ideals of democracy, science, and New Culture, the movement planted the seeds for the formation of the Communist Party of China in 1921.

Today, the movement is commemorated in China as the national holiday Youth Day (青年节) to honor the contributions of young people to China's revolutionary path.

The movement's defense of Chinese sovereignty in the face of imperialist hypocrisy continues to bear resonance.
