On January 7, 2025, devastating wildfires erupted in greater Los Angeles, one day after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck China’s Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region. While LA’s response was appallingly inadequate and militarized, China’s state response was swift and effective in deploying aid and civil defense workers.

Now, more than ever, we need to fight against capitalism in the US, which manifests in worsening conditions nationally while Western imperialism prioritizes funding for wars abroad. Wars that will continue to pollute and exacerbate climate catastrophes such as the ones communities in LA are experiencing. We must learn from China’s model of development: one that has made great strides in meeting people’s needs through quick, coordinated, and well-resourced emergency responses.

Yesterday marked the 87th anniversary of the beginning of the Nanjing Massacre: six weeks of devastation in which the Imperial Japanese Army committed mass murder and r**e of Chinese civilians. The memory of the 300,000 murdered bears new meaning amidst the genocide in Palestine.

China recently ended its intercountry adoption program. Since 1991, over 160,000 Chinese children have been adopted to wealthy imperial core countries in the Global North. 82,674 — more than half — of those children have been adopted by US residents.

Intercountry adoption is a recent phenomenon, beginning after the US imperialist war in Korea. The number of intercountry adoptions has steadily declined worldwide since the mid-2010s, and China suspended international adoption in 2020 after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which almost brought the practice to a halt. Last year, only 16 Chinese children were adopted to the US.

This thread, written by a Chinese adoptee shortly after the announcement of the policy change, provides an anti-imperialist perspective on the end of Chinese intercountry adoption. It also contextualizes the One Child Policy within the imperialist structure that appropriates value from and denies sovereignty to the Global South.

When it comes to mainstream media lies about "rogue nations" and nonstate actors, Palestine is not the exception but the rule. We can't allow US empire to stabilize itself amidst this crisis of legitimacy by demonizing the very entities that offer material solidarity to Palestinian resistance.

On the 77th anniversary of the 228 Incident, Qiao Collective is excited to share an original translation of Lan Bozhou’s 1987 publication “A Beautiful Century,” one of the first Taiwanese accounts of that event which was originally published just weeks after the end of 40 years of brutal martial law. “A Beautiful Century” is the story of Dr. Guo Xiucong (郭琇琮), a Taiwanese communist and martyr of the White Terror period, as told through the recollections of his widow and comrades.
