PRODUCERS JAMES WAN & JASON BLUM, DIRECTOR BRYCE MCGUIRE TALK ABOUT THEIR NEW SUPERNATURAL THRILLER “NIGHT SWIM”

Horror classics such as Poltergeist, Christine, Burnt Offerings and Jaws inspired Night Swim – well, these and a touch of aquaphobia.

“I’ve always had water on the brain,” director Bryce McGuire says. “Growing up in Florida, surrounded by ocean on three sides, in a climate that can only really be survived by partaking in water ritual, knowing friends who drowned, hurricanes that flooded homes, boating accidents, shark attacks, you come to have a kind of fear and reverence for the water.”

As a kid, McGuire loved movies and as he became increasingly interested in the medium, his wary regard for the water flowed naturally into an interest in seaside thrillers. “I saw Jaws when I was 10 years old. We had a swimming pool at the time, and I remember treading water by myself at night when my younger brother turned the lights out. And even though I knew the pool was only 9 feet deep and 18 feet wide, I was certain beyond any doubt that the water was an abyss and something horrible was rising toward me from the depths.”

In Night Swim, based on director Bryce McGuire’s acclaimed 2014 short film of the same name, Ray Waller ( ) is a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness. Secretly hoping, against the odds, to return to pro ball, Ray persuades his wife, Eve (Academy Awards nominee ), that their new home’s shimmering backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids ( and ) and provide physical therapy for him. But a dark secret in the home’s past will unleash a malevolent force that will drag the family under, into the depths of inescapable terror.

All of McGuire’s terrors and tastes find potent and poignant expression in Night Swim. “The pool represents status, diversion, fun,” McGuire says. “It’s sexy; it’s seductive, and that’s what makes it deadly.”

“It was abundantly clear from watching the short that Bryce was a gifted filmmaker with a command of craft and tone,” producer James Wan says. “The story it told was so mysterious and evocative, and Bryce had a compelling vision for how it could be turned into something bigger, stranger and scarier while also being emotionally resonant.”

Adds Jason Blum, also a producer, “What I liked about Bryce’s script was how it fleshed out the premise of a ‘spooky swimming pool’ in a credible, relatable, emotional way that felt contemporary and relatable yet classical at the same time. It’s scary; it’s emotional; it keeps you engaged by constantly begging the question: ‘What would you do if this happened to you?’”

Starting February 21, high dive into the deep end of horror with Night Swim, distributed by Universal Pictures International.

MEET THE CHARACTERS OF “LISA FRANKENSTEIN,” STARRING KATHRYN NEWTON, COLE SPROUSE AND LIZA SOBERANO, YOUR PRE-VALENTINE’S MOVIE, IN CINEMAS FEB. 7

Lisa Frankenstein director Zelda Williams says that her enthusiasm for the film was rooted in her deep admiration for Diablo Cody’s singular voice as a screenwriter, especially when it comes to the characters in her stories.

“The thing I enjoy most about her writing is the personality infused into all of it,” says Williams, who had auditioned for Juno (also written by Cody, for which she won the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award) very early in her acting career. “It’s clear immediately who these characters are, whether they’re for you or not. That sort of strong flavor choice will always be my cup of tea.”

In Lisa Frankenstein, it’s 1989 and Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), an awkward 17-year-old, is trying to adjust to a new school and a new life after her mother’s death and her father’s hasty remarriage. Despite the unwavering support offered by her plucky cheerleader step sister Taffy (Liza Soberano), Lisa only finds solace in the abandoned cemetery near her house, where she tends to the grave of a young man who died in 1837 – and whose co**se she unwittingly reanimates (Cole Sprouse). Feeling obligated to help the poor soul regain his humanity, Lisa embarks on a quest to breathe new life into her long-dead new companion. All she needs to succeed are some freshly harvested body parts and Taffy’s broken tanning bed.

Get to know the movie’s characters who will make you laugh, scream and fall in love this special month of love!

Lisa Swallows (played by Kathryn Newton)

Lisa is a 17-year-old misfit, too self-conscious and withdrawn to fit in with either the popular crowd or even the other outsiders at school, the punks, Goths, and stoners. In the wake of her mother’s murder, she barely speaks. “Lisa Swallows is this girl who isn’t heard, who doesn’t speak up,” Newton says. “She doesn’t think she matters very much. She’s been through a lot of trauma, and she is so hurt and shy she would rather not bring any attention to herself.”

The Creature (Cole Sprouse)

The Creature is the co**se that Lisa unintentionally brings back to life. A professional pianist who took his own life after being rejected by a woman he adored, the Creature was a hopeless romantic, a gentleman well versed in 19th century manners and etiquette, qualities he retains in death, or rather, undeath. He feels immense gratitude toward Lisa that soon blossoms into genuine adoration. “Over time, I think the Creature realizes he’s deeply in love with Lisa,” Sprouse says. “He wants to be her protector, trying to make her feel heard and understood.”

Taffy (Liza Soberano)

Taffy is the kind, if somewhat clueless, stepsister of Lisa. Empathetic, earnest and wildly popular, naturally perfect Taffy is the antithesis of the stereotypical “mean girl” – she welcomes Lisa into her family with open arms and does everything she can to help her fit in. “Taffy is my favorite character,” says Cody.
Janet (Carla Gugino)

Janet is Taffy’s narcissistic mom who dotes on her own daughter, but is endlessly disapproving of Lisa. “Janet lives in Janet’s world for sure – she is definitely the hero of her own story,” says Gugino. “Janet has created and curated a perfect world and a perfect family in her mind, and she cannot imagine how Lisa would not want to be a part of it.”

Dale (Joe Chrest)

Lisa’s own father, Dale, does little to intervene on his child’s behalf, leaving Janet to exert her domineering influence at every turn. “Dale is such a checked-out dad,” producer Mason Novick says. “Diablo writes a lot of dad characters who are just oblivious to what’s going on. I don’t want to say men in Diablo’s scripts are knuckleheads, but the focus of the conversations are on women. The father is around, and he’s really funny, but he’s not the one moving the story forward. He is very much the passive husband.”

Michael Trent (Henry Eikenberry)

Michael is Lisa’s crush whom she describes as an “intellectual punk dreamboat.” Although he initially seems to display an odd kind of fascination with Lisa, he doesn’t necessarily harbor romantic feelings toward her. “He’s so clueless,” says Eikenberry of his character.

Get ready for the funniest, goriest undead horror romance you’ll see all year when “Lisa Frankenstein,” directed by Zelda Williams (daughter of the late Robin Williams and herself part-Filipina) and distributed by Universal Pictures International, opens in cinemas February 7, just in time for Valentine’s Day!

Jack Whitehall is back with another stand-up comedy special on Netflix that just dropped last January 30 titled Jack Whitehall: Settle Down. The British actor-comedian, known recently for films such as Jungle Cruise and the film adaptation of Clifford, the Big Red Dog, goes back to his stand-up roots in a uproariously funny hour that covers everything from his struggles, his relationships, and everything in between.

After a past couple of years showcasing his wares as a dependable character actor on various movies and TV shows, Whitehall triumphantly returns to the craft that made him a household name. Known for his bits that lampoon his relationships with his family and his burgeoning stardom, he updates his material with more hilarity that now targets his struggles with booze, his many anxieties with regard to his relationship with model Roxy Horner and their first-born, how he copes with the transition of being a carefree single man to a family man burdened with responsibilities, and the many unavoidable hijinks of being a now-recognizable name in Hollywood.

The comedy is fast and furious, delivered in the signature Whitehall androgynous style that he even makes fun of in the special. But one thing of note from Settle Down is the arrival of an older, wiser Whitehall - one who's not afraid of being brutally honest with how much he knows he has to improve on, and how much he's messed up over the years. It's that mix of the unrelenting playfulness with a wizened maturity that makes Jack's newest special a must-watch.

The Cinegeeks give Jack Whitehall: Settle Down an A+!

WHO IS MADAME WEB? THE CAST OF “MADAME WEB” TALK ABOUT THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SUPERHEROINE

“Madame Web is a truly dynamic character,” Dakota Johnson, who plays the titular superheroine in Madame Web, shares in a new featurette. In cinemas February 14, Madame Web is the first superhero movie with a female lead in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who develops the power to see the future… and realizes she can use that insight to change it. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women bound for powerful destinies… if they can all survive a deadly present.

Because she can see into the future, “Madame Web’s powers are really interesting,” says Celeste O’Connor, who plays Mattie Franklin.

For Isabela Merced, who portrays Anya Corazón, what’s most interesting about the superheroine’s powers is “how it plays on fate and destiny.”

Teases Sydney Sweeney, who plays Julia Cornwall, “In this one moment, Cassie connects three of their lives.”

Critics who got to join the world premiere of Argylle in London are singing praises of the latest star-studded spy flick from director Matthew Vaughn… with one even joining the call for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize the stunt industry and include a Best Stunt award at the Oscars.

Critic Luis Fernando, who writes for Empire magazine, joined the calls for a Best Stunt award at the Oscars because of how impressed he was with the action of Argylle. “Just had a blast watching ” he posted on X. “1- It’s past time for stunts to have an category! 2- If had come out in 2023, it would dominate the Best Original Song nominations along with . Banger after banger. is THE BOMB!”

“ is a lot of fun & a bit of a throwback,” Screen Rant’s Joseph Deckelmeier posted on X. “It’s the perfect blend of action, comedy, music, and espionage. This cast [is] absolutely incredible & their energy come through the screen. The action, twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat. Watch it on a big screen!”

Editor and podcaster Rachel Leishman loved everything about the movie, especially the music and Alfie the cat! “I love so much,” she said. “A perfect return to form for Matthew Vaughn and a movie that really just speaks to the spy genre and elevates it to a new level. Truly had the best soundtrack too It also proves cats are the best.”

Fan favorite comic book writer Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Kingsman series) also posted his reaction on X, but couldn’t say much as full reviews were under embargo at the time of his posting. “The movie is awesome,” he posted.

More outlets are expected to publish their reviews when embargo lifts January 31.

In Argylle, Bryce Dallas Howard is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books – which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate – begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aidan (Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur. The cast includes Henry Cavill, John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Samuel L. Jackson, Ariana DeBose and Dua Lipa.

Opening in cinemas January 31, “Argylle,” an Apple Original Films presentation, in association with MARV, a Cloudy production, is distributed by Universal Pictures.

A Godsent Killer or an Unpunished Sinner Put to Question through the Main Trailer of ‘A Killer Paradox’

A Killer Paradox presents the story of an ordinary man, who finds himself killing evildoers, and a detective tenaciously in pursuit of him. The main key art shows the contrast between Lee Tang (Choi Woo-Shik) and Jang Nan-gam (Son Suk-Ku) at a homicide scene. Lee looks horrified, standing under the rain while holding the hammer he used to commit his first murder. Detective Jang examines the murder scene, hinting at the tense events that will soon follow.

The story begins when Lee Tang, a submissive man who doesn’t normally fight back, accidentally kills a person. Haunted by fear and guilt, Lee is constantly on edge, and the detective, Jang Nan-gam, is suddenly on his tail. The psychological warfare is carried out between the two with Jang keeping a close eye on changes in Lee’s demeanor.

Just as Lee decides to turn himself in, the news that comes on instantly changes the atmosphere: The victim of Lee’s first murder is a malicious serial killer. There’s a noticeable shift in Lee’s character, evolving from a murderer into a condemner. The plot explores themes such as morality, justice, and personal transformation, with Lee’s evolution from a regular guy to a self-proclaimed judge of justice.

A Killer Paradox is based on the original webtoon of the same name, written by Kkomabi, whose story garnered substantial attention for its gripping and shocking narrative. The series adaptation is brought to life under the expert direction of Lee Chang-Hee (Hell is Other People, The Vanished), renowned for his exceptional talent in handling genre features.

Is he a God-appointed hero or a villain who will undergo judgment? A Killer Paradox will be released globally on February 9, only on Netflix!
