REVIEW - The Infinite by Ada Hoffman

What a fantastic end to the series! The Infinite is really similar to the second book, The Fallen, in the way it shifts perspective and does times jumps. I loved the way Hoffman completed the character arcs, and the plot was exciting and tied up at the end nicely.

If you’re unaware, The Outside series is a sci-fi/cosmic horror series set in the future where the existence of the soul is scientific fact and AI machines have developed to the point of godhood and collect souls upon death. The gods, not wanting humanity to build new machines that could supplant them, have restricted their access to technology. We follow an autistic scientist named Yasira who has built a new machine that, if it works, will generate power far more efficiently. But during testing, something goes wrong, and the nature of reality bends. The gods declare Yasira and her work as heretical, which is punishable by death. But they decide to give her the chance to reduce her punishment if she completes a task for them: find her old mentor, the heretic Professor Evianna Talirr.

I highly recommend this series! Apart from being exciting and trippy from the cosmic horror, the characters are awesome and the themes and sci-fi concepts are rich. Very strong writing, and the world is just jam packed with q***r and neurodivergent people.

I rate all three books in the series ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Watkins Media are seeking a super talented designer brimming with creativity and a clear understanding of the commercial requirements of publishing. The role requires someone capable of coming up with exciting, strong and eye-catching cover designs across all our imprints (Watkins, Angry Robot and Nourish), so a background that includes non-fiction and fiction titles would be an advantage. Experience with Internal layouts and social media posts would also be an advantage.

You’ll take visuals from concept through to print so a solid understanding of the print process is important. Key requirements for this role: enthusiasm and passion for design, a love of being part of a design team, illustration and image manipulation skills, multi-tasking and a strong background in concept design.

To be considered for this vacancy you must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in publishing, be self-motivated, demonstrate a genuine love for book design, and show strong market awareness. You will have a passion for design, and finding creative solutions, as well as being highly proficient in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. You will be organised, deadline-driven, and good at building strong working relationships. Confident communication and interpersonal skills are essential. This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to help develop some exceptional books.

This is a full-time role which will be mainly based at our Islington Offices. The salary for this role is between £27,000 to £33,000 dependent on experience.

Candidates will be selected for interview based on their abilities and we would particularly welcome applications from groups currently under-represented in book publishing.

In a place known as The Ledge, a civilization is trapped by a vast chasm and sheer mountain face. The only outsiders they know are The Glacians – mystical winged creatures who bring them meagre rations to survive, in exchange for a periodic human sacrifice.

Dawsyn, axe wielder and only remaining member of her family, has so far avoided the annual culling, but her luck has run out. She is chosen and ripped from her icy home, the only world she knows. No one knows what will happen to her on the other side, least of all Dawsyn.

Thankfully, the fates align and Dawsyn manages to escape their clutches with the help of a half-Glacian called Ryon. But trust does not come easily, and she keeps a trained axe to his throat while they journey together down the slopes. But who’s to say that the life below will be any better than the one she has run from?
