Green Bay was the worst team in college basketball last year, so they decided to get older.
Much older.
In order to add some maturity to an otherwise young roster, head coach Doug Gottlieb signed the oldest player in the country.
29-year-old forward Ramel Bethea.
Prior to Green Bay, Bethea played 1 season at MiraCosta Community College in San Diego.
Prior to that, he served 5 years in the Navy.
Prior to that, he worked at Target and Dunkin’ Donuts.
But now, he’s playing D1 ball and making the most of the opportunities he gets on the floor.
Playing just 8 minutes a game for the Phoenix, he’s a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor, has grabbed 8 boards and leads the team in blocks, including 2 swats against Kansas.
The 6’9” forward is incredibly long, incredibly grateful for the opportunity and, in his own words, still incredibly “goofy.”
But maybe that’s exactly what a team coming off a 4-28 season needs.
He may not have a future in the NBA, but after having no drive whatsoever after high school, Bethea has found a way to make a future for himself in other ways.
And that makes him one of the better stories in the college game this season.
