The Story of Lunsford Lane: How Entrepreneurial Spirit Overcame Slavery

Welcome to Lunsford Lane on facebook.

Lunsford Lane (May 30, 1803 – June 27, 1879) was a formerly enslaved African-American entrepreneur from North Carolina who bought freedom for himself and his family. He became a vocal opponent of slavery and wrote a slave narrative autobiography. His life and narrative show the plight of slavery, even for the relatively privileged slaves.

Biographers usually love or hate their subjects. So, I must admit before writing further that I admire Lunsford Lane.

During the antebellum era, abolitionists also admired Lane. His accomplishments, they argued, proved that slavery, an institution protected by the government, ignored the individual, and restricted economic growth.
