Myself and Maurice Bird have set up Mange Le Funk Publishing after we were released from a 20 year publishing contract earlier this year.
Originally we went looking to appoint a new publisher as we never really fully understood the publishing side of the music industry. As with a lot of Artists, We were always just excited and happy to get our music out there and heard.
Over the past year, We researched and researched some more looking for as much info on publishing and what we could do regards our ever building back catalogue of music. 🎶
We eventually decided the best thing for us was to go for it, take the plunge and publish ourselves. After a lot of head scratching and more research and by pure chance, We received a message in the form of a light hearted but outright rude DJ feedback from our good buddy Walton (The Best and worst email we have ever received 😆, Love you Wally! 🤣❤️🙏)
Wally introduced us to Andy Bailey from Song Supreme. We started conversations and realised that this man knows his stuff! He was really open, honest, and forthcoming with information, something We find is rare in this industry. He explained everything to us, in how we can set up our business as a publisher and to start publishing music for ourselves and others on a worldwide basis.
Having officially registered the company, We are now ready and in a position to be able to help other artists who are in the same situation as we were and to collect what is rightfully theirs, publishing royalties from their musical compositions worldwide.
The majority of music producers We have spoken to over the last few months have little or no knowledge of publishing, some are even unaware of the income revenue stream they could be making through publishing royalties, but instead just focus on the sales revenue and the kudos and exposure of having their music out there, making their money from DJ bookings and not from the music they release. This is completely fine, if you are happy with that. We were pretty much in that same position ourselves and it’s taken us time and a lot of realisation to get to where we are.
We also found that a few independent Record labels have no understanding or interest in their role in providing artists the correct info so that they are able to collect publishing royalties.
By the lack of advise to the artist on publishing matters, the registration f tracks for collection with collection societies.
To be bold in wording, This quite frankly is beyond us as Its a tough enough industry already in which to earn money. With sales low, streaming royalties for artists virtually non existent. We really think that in this digital world of music. The label and artist should be working together to obtain the best for each other.
Being Artists and now label owners ourselves we can say this mentality of the labels only worrying about their own interests and recouping their own costs and not assisting the artists to make the most of the release, shows a lack of respect for the artist from the label.
Being an artist/record label/publishing company has helped us to understand the bigger picture, we are able to see the situation from all sides.
After our own experiences in the industry over the past 30 years, our business ethos is to make things clear, understandable and fair for all the people we work with. To enable artists to make the most of their material and to get what rightfully belongs to them.
We are open to all artists who have released music commercially regardless of genre. If you have music signed to a record label but have no publishing in place, come abs talk to us, If you are confused by the whole publishing side of things don’t be, if we can help we will. Give us a shout if you need advice
We can also help artists manage publishing for their back catalogue of commercially released music. Help tie up all those loose ends and to make sure you get paid.
